RECOGNITION OF THE NORTHROP P-61 BLACK WIDOW AIRPLANE - WWII NIGHT FIGHTER 81864
Made to educate anti-aircraft gunnery crews, aircraft spotters and airplane pilots and crews, this WWII identification film shows the features of the P-61 airplane.
The Northrop P-61 Black Widow, named for the American spider, was the first operational U.S. military aircraft designed specifically for night interception of aircraft, and was the first aircraft specifically designed to use radar. It was an all-metal, twin-engine, twin-boom design developed during World War II. The first test flight was made on May 26 1942, with the first production aircraft rolling off the assembly line in October 1944. The last aircraft was retired from government service in 1954. Although not produced in the large numbers of its contemporaries, the Black Widow was effectively operated as a night-fighter by United States Army Air Forces squadrons in the European Theater, the Pacific Theater, the China Burma India Theater and the Mediterranean Theater during World War II.

IMHO, one of the most incredible aircraft built during WWII.

I would say it's the most technologically advanced U.S. plane of WWII. The radar and remote control turret systems.

I like this and the Tigercat a lot.
Just a beautiful airplane! My uncle Johnny used to work on these in England during the war.
It's an Absolutely Stunning Beautiful plane!
the original Black Widow. The first long range night fighter, but the Navy use the Hellcat with wing mounted radar as night fighter. Its first mission sneak inside Japanese Naval base in Rabaul
I built a model of that plane. It hangs from the ceiling in my shop. Cool plane.

72polara , I built a 1/48 Monogram model of the P-61 too. It’s a cool and unique plane.
Thanks , We Own The Night!
The dorsal turret looked fearsome, and was, but it caused such a huge amount of buffet that most P-61 missions were flown with it removed.
I don't know where or how you got your start but I love this channel.

My father was in the coast guard during WWII, on a AK "attack cargo" ship.....spoke about delivering P-61's to Guadalcanal, when I built the monagram model when I was younger.......I'm figuring around 1944.......
beautiful plane !!!!!
I have a very beautiful framed picture of one with a German plane in the background on fire. What is really cool the crew signed the back of it.
Looks like a B25 & a P38 had a big bouncing baby boy
One of my favorites. Actually # 3 in my ratings.
I think I've got it... what was that again?
Northrop did a booming business during the war.
outstanding!!! en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Northrop_P-61_Black_Widow still remembered as my favorite model built as a teen
P38 on steroids. Curious if it could attain the speeds the P38 could. Dive brakes on it were to slow it to keep from shaking itself apart. What they didn't know was it was approaching the sound barrier.
By the end of the war, the nation with an undisturbed home front developed the best technology. And to this day we’ve maintained that tech edge to some extent across almost all forms of arms.
I was thinking it was going to demonstrate some Schräge Musik like firepower given the early description of the weapon placement.

The British planners that specified it as a "turret fighter" had that in mind also.
Best part was that tiny bit at the end when they fired her guns. I wish there had been more of that. But, I understand the reason behind the clip.
Intimidating voice...he means business!
Just when I thought I'd seen everything....Something new....
There was a secret fly-off between the P-61 and the Mosquito in England in 1945. The P-61 spanked it, but the RAF had the results made classified... Oh, and John Wescott Meyers, the chief P-61 test pilot regularly outflew P-38s in mock combat.

How would this compare to the P38?

Much bigger, different purpose to some extent. Different makers. The P38 Lightening was made by Lockheed. The P61 was made by Northrup. Factories were about 40 miles apart. The P38 was designed as a fighter. It had a single person crew, and (at least initially) no radar. It was primarily a day fighter, though of course used for other things. The P61 had a crew of three, the pilot, the radar operator, and the rear gunner. It was built around a nose radar in that big nose fairing. The P61 was specifically a night fighter.

The P-61 Black Widow was built specifically as a night fighter and was certainly the only allied aircraft that was originally designed for that role. And as the previous comment stated it was much bigger than the P-38 Lightning. However, the P-38 was used as a night fighter: The P‑38M, known as the "Night Fighter," (or Night Lightning) were modified P‑38Ls which were equipped with a state-of-the-art radar system, (an AN/APS-4 AI radar pod mounted under the nose on a modified bomb pylon). This model of the P‑38 was painted jet black and had flash guards on the armament to better hide in the night sky. The radar equipment was operated by a guy crammed in behind the pilot under the bubble canopy. Due to the limited quarters in the rear of the cockpit, really big guys were not the preferred operators for the radar. Where my parents live in North Yorkshire, England there's the site of an old RAF base (now a landscaped quarry with lake); RAF Scorton. The 425th NFS (night fighter squadron) was based there briefly before moving to France and then Belgium after D-day. I'm not sure, but I believe there were three squadrons there all equipped with the P-61. It must have been quite something to have seen those aircraft flying.

We should have chosen the YF-23, to have a new black widow in the air.

Do not really understand how it was used as opposing air forces tended not to fly at night.
