Recode, Rekey Car Door Lock Cylinder - Use Any Key to Unlock Car!!! Ex. Durango

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

How to recode most car door lock cylinders to work with any key you have. Used a cylinder out of a 99 Dodge Durango.
Find Replacement lock and pins here:
www.amazon.com/gp/search/ref=... lock cylinder&index=aps&camp=1789&creative=9325&linkCode=xm2&linkId=fe3b22c2fc83f8767ef7703535e285cc
Notes:
1) I had the right key when I inserted it which let the barrel come out smoothly. However, most will not have a key that will bring all the pins down. The idea here is to bring them down "most the way" and then you can use a small screwdriver to push them down one at a time to slide it out.
2) The numbers on the pins are to distinguish between pin heights.
3) The reason you may have a pin or two that does not match is because you did not end up with the exact pin numbers you needed for that key. However, as you saw in the video you can either grind them down if desired, or leave them out all together.

Great video. I just used it to recode a new cylinder for my Honda. The lock broke and I ordered it online for $13. Trial and error worked except for one slot which I just left out. I learned so much and saved about $50 for a locksmith to do the same job. I can't wait to see what is broken on the old lock when I swap them out.

Thanks so much for this video! I called two locksmiths and got tired waiting for a callback. I first tried to find the correct pins while not removing the springs and quick started to get irritated with pins popping out. I then realized how important your recommendation to remove the springs actually made the process move faster. Thanks again for taking the time to make this video!

I used this to recode my 99 Toyota Corolla door lock cylinder. I only had 1 of the 7 wafers that I couldn't re-use. I just left it out instead of trimming it. On the Toyota it was much the same setup but two of the wafers were split into two parts with a "wing" on each side. Different but the concept is the same. I reconfigured it with this video in about an hour. Thanks a lot!

Thanks just doesn't seem to express my gratitude. This all started 2 weeks ago, the linkage on that door handle popped apart on my way to a family thing so I just used the inside handle so not to be late. when we were leaving I rolled down my window and it got stuck in the linkage then the door wouldn't open at all so I started this adventure having to pull the door panel off while sprawled across from the passenger side. A week ago I finally got the door open by just blindly disassembling everything attached to the door 2 days ago I received my shipment of 6 plastic clips so I could put it all back together but to attach the clip to the outer door handle I had to pull the cylinder that turned out to break into pieces, after all that I got lucky enough to find your awesome instructions so I don't have to change all of my locks and now I can keep my original key. thank you so very much.

Great video! I got a replacement lift gate for my '98 Durango off a '00 Durango and swapped my locks to match. I figured I'd try keying the spare cylinder to my key. Sure enough I had the same issue of one slot not matching any of the pins. It was a #4 pin in the 3rd slot from the keyside of the lock. Filed it down and it works great, so now I'll have a spare cylinder lying around. THANKS!

After watching your video for inspiration... I had a similar situation with my 2000 Tahoe. However the mechanism is a little different and couldn't get the pins out - what I did was insert the key and noticed only 1 or 2 pins were still ever so slightly raised, so I simply used some wire snips to lightly clip off a small bit of the pin. This isn't 100% professional, but it's quick, cheap, and still quite reliable! (did this for 2 separate locks with that were for 2 separate keys). THANK YOU!

Thank you so, so much for posting this video! My daughter got her only car key stuck in the door lock of her Lexus late last night, so, naturally, she calls Mom and Dad to come save her, again... ;) We take the door panel off and then the handle and lock off with the key stuck inside and I know that the tumblers must be moved but I simply didn't know how to do that, so after messing with it for an hour I call triple A and they send a locksmith out, who seems like a nice guy, but is admittedly no locksmith but he can get you into your car if you're locked out, which we were not. He takes the thing and is looking at it and wiggling it and looking just as lost as we are so he calls his boss because apparently his boss is a locksmith but it's after midnight and he doesn't want to come out and refuses to walk him through it on the phone and tells him to abort the call and tell triple A that it needs to be towed. Quite surprised and a bit frustrated that this boss guy refused to allow his guy to help us, I call triple A and cancel the whole thing, pack it in and leave the car where it was, taking this door handle, lock and key home with me so I can take it to a locksmith in the morning. So, I get up this morning and being no fan of defeat, especially knowing in my gut that it's a super simple fix, I search and I find this great video and within seconds I've got that pesky lock disassembled and the key out! Thank you sir for handing me this little win and saving the day! :D

I have 96 Corolla with a driver side door lock that doesn’t turn when the key is in. I’m guessing one of the split wafers wore out after 25 years and is sticking out preventing the cylinder from turning. I haven’t opened up the door to check yet, but I’m pretty sure it’s a faulty wafer. Would u recommend I just remove the faulty wafer or do I need to buy another one? Or should shaving it down with a file also work? And will the lock cylinder work with a wafer removed? (I don’t rly care about worsening the security of the lock)

@@HisMajesty99 If you have a spare key, test it before you do anything else. It could be the key has worn down. If the spare key works, but the normal one doesn't, it's the key. If you don't have a spare, test the key on the other door/s and if they turn, you'll know it's the lock cylinder and not the key. Then you can disassemble the lock cylinder and get a good look at what is stopping the cylinder from rolling. Good luck!

Great video. I do a lot of rekeying of house locks and I have an assortment of pins to do that. It looks like the car door locks all have the same pins but in different orders, and I correct?
