Reclaiming a Field/Brush Mowing/Plowing/Discing/Spreading Manure

There is a field South of the farm that hasn't been worked in about 4 years. The field used to be pastured, but the annual flooding in the Spring kept taking the fence down, so we no longer used it. Alan decided to start planting corn on the 3 acre piece. Alan planted corn at that field for a few years, but the local Beaver population had other plans. The Beavers plugged the culvert under the road to the field and the whole road ended up getting washed away. The road needed to have a new culvert, but it went on the backburner for a few years. Alan decided it was time to reclaim that field after seeing how bad the brush had grown in.
Alan tried discing the brush down, but it needed to be mowed. Alan's brother, Paul, brush mowed the field with the 820 John Deere. Alan then plowed the field with the International 1066. After that was done, Paul spread some manure from a Heifer pen on the field while Alan disced with the International 1256. All that's left to do now is to plant some corn!

I don't know what you think Allen but I think when you get to open a new piece of ground like that or clearing old fence rows or something like that that gives you a new respect for what our four bears did ahead of us to clear this ground and get it where we can farm it

When I was a kid on the farm 60 years ago, my father insisted that the pastures be clipped at least twice in the growing season. (Side sickle mower on an IH Super A) Fast forward many years and I returned to my roots. I bought a farm that had been neglected for at least 15 years. As I reclaimed fields and pastures, I finally understood why my father insisted on clipping the pastures.

Those 3 acres of reclaimed crop land is like money in the bank. Nice job Alan - you take waste land and turn it into crop land. You never know but perhaps sometime in the future, the crops you get from those 3 acres could be the difference in having enough feed to get you through an extremely tough or long winter. Keep working that magic! Nice to see everyone out in the field! God Bless!!

I know from experience how alderbrush and willow can take over so fast. We had to go in with a chainsaw to cut a bunch of it. It was tedious work. We pastured it for a year then plowed it. Picked lots of rocks and sticks but with work and persistence the field came around. The first year of corn made it all seem worth it. Sounded like that little John Deere had to grunt a little in that stuff. That tractor is pulling that plow just fine.

Yep along with the UK, France, Germany and many other countries where cattle are inside during the winter months on slats. But now most farmers and contractors are using dribble bars on the slurry tankers which puts the slurry on the ground as opposed to spraying it in the air. Cattle slurry dosen't smell to bad, It's the Pig slurry that really stinks. Dung spreaders and a bit of a dying bread.

I helped a friend who had a low pasture plowed with a four foot plow pulled by a caterpillar. He leased a Ford tractor with duels and a new disk, I had to go in first gear and hang on very good because of the roller coaster ride over the holes left as the soil was turned over leaving four foot drop offs, as the front wheels came to the edge the soil crumbled into the hole so I never went four feet down but second gear was out of the question. That field produced some fantastic silage corn that is for sure.

Nice. I reclaimed about 3/4 acre last fall and this spring. I didn't have a brush cutter so I was pulling them out with a chain and my 8n Ford. I had stacked it all up an burned it before I ran my single bottom plow and then my disk and cultivator over it. It was a lot of work, but I think you're right it's totally worth it. My rye is coming up nicely. This fall I hope to get back out there and see If i can get another 1/2 acre or so reclaimed gradually increase my field size.

That 1066 has likely been turned up, but you weren't plowing real deep either, and from the looks of that soil type, its not really too much for that 1066. We use to have a 6/16 bottom plow that we pulled with our Case 1370 and then in later years with our Case 2390. But our soil types around here are black loam, and clay loamy soils, with some black and clay muck in parts of certain fields, and that 6/16 bottom plow would work those tractors pretty good. That field you were plowing look like it had a more silty sandy loam soil type, so that plow shouldn't be too much for a 1066, especially being a land plow, along with you not plowing real deep, like you would in the fall. Those old IH 1066 tractors were good tractors, now if it was a John Deere with roughly the same Hp rating, would probably struggle, lol. Those old IH tractors and the old Case tractors were strong pulling tractors.
