I don't understand why convicted criminals who are involved in situations like these aren't forced to pay for the damages and resources taken to catch them? Either through asset seizures or long-term repayment schemes if they eventually find employment in the future. Failing that, they go to a government work camp/prison and work the minimum wage there. There has to be some form of repayment/deterrent surely?

Because it isn't reasonable to expect that they'd have to resources to cover even portion of the costs. They're fined and will be ordered to pay 'compensation' for the damage, but it's usually less than £1000, which is not terrible considering police have a vehicle maintenance section so they're not paying anywhere near what we'd pay for the same damage.

In my younger days I broke into about 8 cars in a drunken spree about 1987 I was sentenced to a month in a detention centre which I managed to appeal went to Crown Court had to pay all of the costs of damage plus approx half of the legal aid and fined £1200 all in all cost me About £5000 which 35 yrs ago was a fair whack considering I was on £200 a week then aged 21 ps I didn't do it again we are way too soft in the UK

The other reason is any collision with a pedestrian would probably be fatal..
