Recipe for a perfect love story
Until recently, Tim Harris, of Albuquerque, New Mexico, was the only restaurant owner in the country with Down syndrome. But what drives a restaurateur who has lived for his business to close up shop? A girl he loves more than anything. Steve Hartman reports.

Samantha Cole - Did Tim's father put the business in his sons name? I doubt it. It could effect his disability benefits, which is why the business Sean's mom started is legally owned by her so he still gets all his financial assistance and public housing. But on the rare chance this business is legally in Tim's name, he definitely didn't get or file the paperwork himself, he didn't get a small business loan from the bank himself or lease the space with his non existent money. Pretty sure Tim didn't file for an LLC or handle the money side of things at all. His FATHER filed the paperwork. His father rented the space. His father gave him all the money he needed to operate. Tim gets to cook food and give hugs- about all he can do. And I'm sure people love his hugs. Everyone loves the sweet innocence of a toddler. I know it's a feel good story so we are just supposed to pretend a mentally handicapped person can do anything. But the reality is that parents buying a job for their disabled child is not a new concept. It's much easier than getting a real business to employ them. I'm sure Tim's dad will rent space to put up tables so he'll have something to keep his mentally handicapped child occupied again. It's not like Tim could ever be independent. Even the highest functioning person with Down Syndrome does not comprehend the concept of money or have the ability to handle money. That is why no person born with Down Syndrome can ever be fully independent. Not a single cast member of the show Born This Way is even close to independent. They just redefine independence to mean that someone like Sean can move from his mothers house to publicly funded housing and have a taxpayer funded nanny named Alex be paid to live with Sean to care for him since he cannot ever care for himself. I know Sean is adorable, they all are. Adults with simple minds of toddlers with cute speech impediments and the chubbiest cheeks you've ever seen make for great tv -but that doesn't change the simple reality that mentally handicapped adults with the IQ of a 3yr old child need public assistance their entire lives. I don't have a problem with that. I'm not sure why you get so angry when I point out the obvious. I never insulted you or anyone in any video. I just comment on the reality of the public funding those with DS receive and that the show Born This Way is not forthcoming or up front with the level of assistance all the cast members receive. If they were, you would see Sean's taxpayer funded nanny Alex on the show, but they have never even mentioned him. They just pretend that Sean does everything that Alex actually does for him. I think it's wrong to mislead people about the true reality of having a DS child. The show could influence some into deciding not to follow the advice of the entire WORLD's medical profession - which is to pre-screen for this unfortunate syndrome and avoid bringing those pregnancies to term. Early termination of a DS pregnancy is what all of medicine recommends, it's not my idea. What will happen to Sean after his parents die? If he doesn't have Alzheimer's by that point (over 50% chance he will based on historical data on those with DS), it's like a toddler becoming an orphan. The government would have to fully care for him until his death and he will become severely depressed. Since it's not like your mom dying when you are 50. It's like your mom dying when you are 3 and you count on her to be there for you. Most parents don't like to think of having a child that they know will never be able to take care of themselves. Many potential parents might see that as unfair to the potential child - to have that child, knowing they will probably die before that child, leaving them totally helpless and in the custody of the state. The only reason why the level of financial assistance that DS people get works for now is because there are so few of them. Pre-screening and termination has helped us drastically reduce the instances of this syndrome in our society. I'm sure no one would ever wish for their child to be born with any disability. Pre-screening helps prevent that. Some may even consider it a selfish act to give birth to a child that you know you will leave to fend for themselves when you die - and know that child will not have the ability to take care of itself ever.

Samantha Cole - on another video about Tim's place the poster of the video ADMITS that Tim "focuses on customer service" and has "managing partners" to do the actual running of the business. So they freely admit that basically all Tim does is give hugs to people that come in. It's not his fault he's handicapped. I don't know why you seem to think it's a bad thing that Tim doesn't have the ability to actually run a business. He's lucky enough that his dad can buy and run a business for him and let him be around normal people for the attention that DS people deeply crave. Many times they are ignored by people, so Tim just loves that people will talk to him and hug him. I'm pretty sure Tim isn't doing payroll or filing taxes for the business. But that's fine. I just don't see why you get upset if everyone won't pretend Tim runs the place on his own. Because even he admits he doesn't do anything but give hugs. Which makes perfect sense to me. He focuses on his strengths - which are hugs, not math.

ANNEM LINNEMEIER we have to realize that at the end of the day Tim and Tiff still have DS and legal decisions will still be made by their parents/guardian. The success of these relationships is like 80% dependent on their support system/families because the reality is that these two cannot just live by themselves. They will forever need help from day to day decision makings.
@wemuk5170

This is likely to be because he is much more able than her and will need a lot less support than she does. Those with intellectual disability can have mental ages varying from 1 to 12! They are that diverse! At puberty my son’s educational psychologist told me the mental age slows down or stops at that stage. They will not reach ‘adulthood’ at 18. Sports authorities (such as the Special Olympics and the Paralympics regulating authorities) would classify those who have the average IQ of 75 & below as intellectually disabled. At 60/70, they don’t even seem or ‘look’ (for want of a better word, with apologies for any offence caused) ‘disabled’ unless one has DS. The range of ability is that great. Thus he has to move if he is, clearly, the more able of the two.

Sara - it depends on if the parents of both disabled adults keep it going. All Downs people find their soul mate and eternal love at Down syndrome conventions and they talk about how deeply in love they are and how they are going to marry that person. If you watch "Born this Way" on A&E, an adult with DS named Sean (who's parents pushed the idea of being a "ladies man" on their severely mentally disabled son) can't stop saying the phrase "ladies man" despite not having the foggiest idea what sex is (he said it's another word for marriage) and he literally will only say "I need a gf" or "I have a gf" to any question you ask him. He's had about 4 girlfriends in the last 6 months (there are a lot of DS conventions $$$). and each one of them he swore his eternal love for and promised to marry them and love them forever. Then he saw another girl, and like a 4yr old, forgot about the last love of his life from the week before. Another mentally disabled cast member dumped one boyfriend she had for like 8yrs the second she met a new boy. And she was planning to have a baby with him by the 2nd date (yes, her mom had her so delusional and self-confident she felt totally ready to have a baby despite being unable to feed herself). We try so hard to treat these severely mentally disabled people like everyone else, we forget that they are in fact SEVERELY MENTALLY DISABLED. We create this fake reality where two severely mentally disabled people reunite at the airport- and conveniently leave out that there is no way either one of them live anything close to an independent life. And of course we always pick the least disabled looking candidates to promote - it looks like this guy has Mosaic Down syndrome - which unfortunately makes him not entitled to the windfall of guaranteed government handouts someone with full DS has - his gf looks like she's very high functioning full DS. They never do a news piece on the typical DS adult who can barely speak and wears adult diapers. There is a reason our medical profession RECOMMENDS pre-natal Down syndrome testing - AND THEY RECOMMEND TO TERMINATE any pregnancy that tests positive for Down syndrome. But this America - and our reality is what we choose it to be!! So UNLIKE in Europe where the termination rate of DS pregnancies is 95-99%, here we only abort like 75%, and then the parents of these disabled kids spend the rest of their lives living in their altered realities where they believe their disabled child is actually not disabled. They do so by forcing schools to let their kid sit in normal classes. Do they learn anything? No. But that's not the point. The point is that they feel normal. That's why they started calling the life skill classes they take as adults "college". So they can say they go to college. The next step is creating pretend jobs for them so they can say they have a job. Is there anything they can do better than a normal person? Of course not, but these are made up jobs anyway that are solely for the self-esteem of the disabled. But they still can't do the pretend job, so we pay a normal person to do the job for them and make sure they don't get hurt. We call these people "job coaches". Most people would not realize a job comes with a paid coach - but this is AMERICA!!! Where we will go to any length necessary to create our own reality we are happy with. Now your adult child with a mental capacity of a 4yr old has attended school with normal kids, gone to college, has a job - next step is their taxpayer funded apartment. That's right folks, your DS adult is ENTITLED to FREE housing FOR LIFE for being born so special!!! What's that you say? Your DS adult can't feed or dress themselves? No worries! Taxpayers gladly also pay the salary of a full-time assistant to be your adult child's "roommate" and take them everywhere they need to go. And they can just pretend it's their buddy who happens to be their roommate. The great part is - just like Sean from Born This Way - they are SO MENTALLY DEFICIENT that they truly believe they live on their own, and the guy named Alex who couldn't be any less interested in anything they say, is their buddy and roommate. Does it matter that Alex is paid by taxpayers to babysit Sean 24/7? Sean seems to have no idea and is extremely proud to lie to everyone about HIS apartment and how independent he is. Despite being 100% dependent on taxpayers and 100% dependent on Alex to do anything or go anywhere. Sean can't read or write and didn't graduate high school - but that didn't get in the way of him talking about "graduating" high school and having pictures of him wearing a cap and gown, implying that he graduated. Luckily they don't just hand diplomas to anyone who can't read or write. But sadly, I doubt we are far away from that starting to happen. I mean, why withhold a high school diploma just because someone is illiterate? That's discrimination!!! We can keep up this alternate reality as long as we limit all these benefits to one lucky class of disabled (Sorry Autisic kids - no $$$ million dollar handouts for you - there are too many of you!!). But what happens if everyone starts to think that Down syndrome is no biggie and we have millions of people collecting millions each in benefits and living until 50-60 years old. You can live in whatever reality you create for yourself - until there isn't enough money to go around for all those wanting a government funded dream life.
anyone know if these two got married? id love to see wedding pics if they did...
