So exciting to bring land back into production. I'm doing it on a small scale. Everyone wins .

I remember watching the earlier episode about his farm, not that I can remember all that much about what it looked like back then but your word picture certainly showed how much you and all the people who have worked on it have accomplished in such a short time. That steep walk down to the crick is a nightmare I am sure that I would never have the nerve to ride up and down it in an open vehicle. I can hear Mum say do you want me to wrap you in cotton wool and put you in the China cabinet I think I would have said yes please if I can take my books with me.. Looks great we keep hitting road blocks on our land but if God be for us who can be against us. It will eventually start to move forward.

That place looks a lot better. I bet once you finish the woven and barb wire fence, Connor and Isaac will be happy working with high tensile fence. I know I am. I really don’t like to working with barb fence because it ruins clothes, gloves, and makes scars too. Thanks for an update on the ram farm. I get to go back to work on Monday October 18. I’m so excited but I bet I’m a little out of shape from my herniated disc. It will be a process getting back where I was. I’m going to do it slow because I don’t want to end there again. I’ve been off of work since August 10. Thanks again for all your videos!

Hey Greg and Jan, another great informational piece. Thanks! Just a thought about the cedar and other tree specie that result from clean up or silvopasture development. I think there is a market out there for wood turners that would change a limb or off cuts of a corner post into works of art. I have no details related to price vs cost, but perhaps something to investigate. Maybe another revenue stream for the operation. Take care.

In our Kansas Flint Hills as far as you can see there are very few shade trees. Plus they burn many acres in spring. Wonder if they have ever pondered doing it a little different.

Fire is a tool that can be overused. Animal impact that would trample the grass onto the ground and form a litter bank would allow them to grow soil instead of burning soil.

Do you think that solar charger would work to keep cows in with 1 strand. Inside a perimeter woven wire.

Yes it would work well.

Can you still harvest fatwood from those cedar trees after they have been pushed? I remember cutting fatwood from the stumps of cedar trees with those red centers. But we always cut it fresh or after girdling the tree and letting it stand dead for a year. The theory was that the sap would run back down to the stump area thus making the fatwood better. I'm not sure that actually did anything though. I am sure that Greg would already be doing it if it was a viable income stream. I know it is a struggle to find a way to extract value from many of the "junk species" of trees. We did used to make a lot of cash from Fatwood though.

How about digging a hole and making some bio char?

Greg, do you worry about stolen animals or disgruntled neighbors sabotaging the herd? May sound crazy to some, but I’m sure it happens. Do you have a need to put trail cams out for a while on newly leased land or sketchy areas?

No we are with our animals twice per day, this helps on keeping trouble makers off our farms.

How about weeds and things that grow up under the fence? Do you have to keep it mown to keep Timeless fence hot?

No, just use a good charger.

I am down to Just Two dogs….. And I like it ! Cats, Snakes, Turtle and Fish are gone. Hallelujah !

Do those red cedar got to be cured in order to be used and apparently it’s OK to leave the bark on them?

Yes you can leave the bark on them. Best if the post are dried 6 months or so before you put them into the ground.

I am curious what lime costs in your area? Where I am at in western New york it costs about $40 a ton custom spread. So it is about $120 per acre to put 3 ton on. Idle ground that hasn't had much done with it in this area is usually in the low 5ph range so it takes a lot of lime to make it productive land.

$44 an acre for 3 tons to the acre of lime spread. This farm is 3 miles from the lime quarry.

Couldn't you bring in a wood chipper and make mulch out of all that brush? I imagine it could be good to spread over something somewhere.

Brush piles are necessary for wildlife management give shelter to game birds and rabbits.

A chipper would be ideal, but large logs would require specialized equipment not realistically available in many areas. It would also add huge unnecessary costs that I would choose not to incur. It’s too bad that chipping isn’t a job for someone to generate profitable enterprise.

We dig a hole and tamp in the dirt or loose rock around the post.

what's your thoughts on the crazy fertilizer market for P & K? is a guy better off to just do it and pay the crazy price but gain more time the soil to improve and grow better forage or should a guy wait until things settle down. I got about 30 acres that i tested a month ago that only showed 25 lb. P so will be cashy to get us back to acceptable levels and let cattle do the rest over time. always have problems with broom sedge and lanceleaf ragweed and always figured it was a PH issue but PH was 5.9, wish the PH was the issue lime would've been a cheaper fix...

Lay down as much carbon as you possibly can followed by livestock eating, trampling and pooping on it.

For anyone that is confused: Forklore says that persimmon seeds when split/cut down the middle will forecast the winter. A fork is a mild winter, spoon is lots of snow, and a knife is lots of ice.
