Most of my favorite books have disturbed me in some way, and almost all of my favorite movies were disturbing to me. I also enjoy Space Opera and lighthearted Fantasy but when I am disturbed and forced to think, I usually enjoy the experience. Count me as someone wanting to read this more now. 🙂

Love your take on the Genocides. “It was the darkest, most depressing… I loved it.” 😂 maybe read Anna Kavan’s Ice next.

'Faradawn' used to pop up all the time in my early days of bookselling. It was always a really tough sell- I have a copy of course! 'The Genocides' is seminal New Wave SF, love it.

Your channel reminds me I need to get back to reading. The world got wild in 2020 so I've been focusing on reality for four years. I miss fantasy and I wonder if the world would be better if it had more fantasy. I think I'll read a good book tomorrow. Thank you for your channel.

Matt, great episode as always. You sort of glossed over what looked like the best read of the bunch; Quest For The Faradawn, and then you mentioned it looked like something you would really enjoy. The premise sounds awesome. Great story idea, IMHO. Can't get behind Disch. Tried, but failed twice. Will be interested to hear what you thought of the Faradawn book once you've read it. Cheers.

I didn't do much 'homework' before this video so I had no info on the book but 'Quest For The Faradawn' just seems like something I'd of loved as a kid. Whenever I get to it I'll be sure to discuss it here!

William Barton is a weird one..... Nothing he's written rises above pulp products of its time.... Strange sexual concepts popping in and out... But it comes so close to brilliance sometimes with the psychology of certain characters. When heaven fell is his best work - so even if you're mixed on dark sky, legion and others - Make sure you try that one. Even on Goodreads that one is extremely well received.

That first book… woah…. That is deep man. I may be lost right now but it is currently midnight and I have to be up in 4hrs. Yes, KZread binging got me too! Anyway, my girl will be interested in the book. Imma cop it for her. I will continue saying prayers for you and your wife. My deepest condolences as you go through this journey. BTW: Awesome set up! Love all the books!

That Disch book sounds so bleak! Intriguing though. I think you'll enjoy No Enemy But Time - it's a fascinating time travel premise, and Michael Bishop is a great wordsmith. I would count it among the top 3 books I've read so far this year.

I love SciFi and just found this little gem of a channel. Could you perhaps do some recommendation videos without major spoilers? Like for example "Books in the spirit of ..."? It's so hard to find good SciFi that isn't just "war in space". I love the 60s exploration and society based books. Stuff from Asimov, Arthur C. Clarke and everyone related. They've became a rare breed nowadays. Also did you read the "Athos" thing (some number follows 2567 or something)? It's brilliant. I just can't seem to find anything as deep and "out of the box". But there has to be some stuff out there, unknown to me. Keep going! :)

Hate when I get fooled by a renamed SF book. Its happened more than once. I can echo your review of ‘Genocides’. The title really should make it obvious that you are in for a dark read, plural genocide. So haunting, but so good I want to read it again. A fun Disch, reminiscent of PKD, is ‘Echo Round His Bones’. It is an unusual take on teleportation.

PKD is someone I've barely read, to my shame. 1 short story and Androids is about it. I'm definitely in the mood for more Disch and PKD. Will keep an eye out for ‘Echo Round His Bones’.
