Recap Your Speakers, Crossover Recapping Wharfedale Diamond 3. Mondorf Ecap Capacitor Bipolar Alcap

Музыка

After recapping the top end was more present with nice fine detail with a longer decay.
A little brigher without becoming to bright.
Mids were a little more present, soundstage was a little wider beyond speakers with some more depth.
Maybe a tad more detail in the lower frequencies.
I did not include a sound test as my room at the moment has to many reflections, but I will in a future video have a before and after test.

Really enjoyed this one, and it's given me a bit of a inspiration to look out for something old, cheap but good to have a go at. My biggest issue is I have quite a few pairs of bookshelf speakers. However I acquired a pair of Dali Oberon 1's pretty cheaply and literally fell in love with them on first listen, and now every thing else I try I go straight back to the Dali's after a brief swap.

Thanks Kevin, once you get a good pair they can become very hard to beat as so many just average pairs about. Though still fun trying them all out.

Hi Michael - nice overview - thanks for sharing it with us! I rewired some older Mission 700's and replaced the Dynavox tweeters a while ago. I brought them back into my main system for a quick test and was well pleased with the definition and detail, so fettling older speakers is definitely worthwhile and cost-effective. You've got me wondering if I should re-cap my beloved KEF Reference Three-Twos which are about 24 years old now. All the best, Rob in Switzerland

Hi Rob, Switzerland was mine and the wife's first hoilday together and we loved it, we must go back soon. Think if speakers are old and the new caps are not to expensive then well worth a try. I have done a few pairs of speakers now and the extra detail has been noticable. If the tone changed or were to bright then I could have always but the old caps back.

I also have a working pair of Diamond 1's that have never been opened and stored for 30+ years. I am going to recap them and would be very interested how your experience went and what capacitors you used.

I did the speakers late last night and been listening to them today. They sound much better with more detail especially in the top end. Thanks Michael for this video as I would have not even bothered to do them and very pleased I did. I have a load of vinyl to replay now on my new speakers.

@@stevecoleman3724 I got them done last night and well worth the effort. I ordered Mundorf Caps and very pleased with the results. More detail and its very easy to hear the before and after. Top end is very nice indeed.

In this use case, which way around you put the caps won't matter.

That was a good trade off for the amount of money spend on these speakers. I would have soldered the drivers. I do not like these fast-on connectors.

Was going to soldier the wires here, but I wanted to return for a sound test with old crossover as well and might try and get hold of a 2.2uf Mondorf to finish this pair off. Then soldier.

Capping speakers is so rewarding and a breeze compared to Amps I found. The last i did was for some NAD 8025's. Sad theres no reason to do my new speakers, maybe in a few years time. The added problem is they dont use screws now so god knows how you get the drivers out without longterm damage. Its for this reason ill stick to older speakers if buying any in the future. Great vids mate

Thanks for the comment, I know what you mean by a lot new speakers not having any screws, will be a pain in years to come to recap them. Nice to have a nice smooth looking finish, but nothing wrong with screws.

Rauh is pronounced like row (As in fight. Not in a boat or theatre) without pronouncing the w at the end. Maybe I'll pick up some diamond 3's at some point. I've been watching the Haycross audio channel. Interesting stuff.

Thanks, Yes Haycross Channel is doing some excellent work re-building cabinets and crossovers for various speakers. He knows far far more than me about how speakers tick. Just a basic recap here but came off pretty well. Be interesting to hear what you think of the old diamond 3's if you do come across a pair.

I finally got some. Didn't like what I heard and figured the caps were out of spec. Started by measuring the tweeters. They measure 5.1 Ohm (so I am guessing they are 6 ohm and the 2 ohm resistor is there to make them 8), but hey what is that red lacquer on the binding post? That can't be good, lets get that of with some steel wool, which instantly clung to the magnet (duh) let's wipe that off. Ok now I snapped the lead wire to the voice coil. Tried to fix it but burned it with my soldering iron... So now looking for a new tweeter. I found out the big 450Mfd Cap is in the woofer section. Just there to protect it from rumble and bass spikes from careless users. The woofer isn't actually crossed over other than by the speaker itself, so I am going to remove the 450Mfd altogether. I'll look for some film caps for the tweeter. The tweeters are ferrofluid by the way (took of the magnet which is glued) so a potential problem in the future when they dry out. I don't think the voice coils can be replaced. It's all glued to the plastic front.

(Sorry, Michael, have to revise my original comment). Re the bass, the original Elcap caps (still available) were electrolytic and they would produce punchier bass than the Mundorf Ecap caps being polypropylene are known not to sound as punchy and can sound 'plasticky'. Yes, they do sound brighter, but not as smooth as paper in oil. If you can find PIO caps for the tweeter, that would be preferable. I'd replace the 450uF with new Elcap (at slightly higher value, 470uF), and you'll find the bass will sound more solid with more oomph than polyprop film caps. Also worth noting that the ferrofluid (Aliexpress) in the tweeters may have dried up somewhat and can benefit from refilling. PS: Also worth noting that the original rubber surrounds would have hardened somewhat and don't sound as good as new, obviously and I've replaced mine with foam surrounds, being more pliable, can reveal more details and sound more musical. Only pain is having to replace them every 10-15 years.
