Takes me back to 1972. I bought my first car, a 1970 Dodge Charger 440 six pack. When I raised the hood and saw that beautiful six pack, I was sold. The sound of those three 2 barrels coming in was heaven. Thanks for the memory! I still dream about that car.

Truth is when you get up to 425 horsepower 500 foot pounds of torque in any of those big block engines that's as much power as your normal tires and drive train can ever use anyhow.

I have that same setup in a boat. I used to run air filter box on my carbaiters but I found some nice velocity stack spark arrestors at Alberts performance in California that eliminates all coughing back through the carbaitors. Those would look sick in a car too. They are very low profile and would fit under the hood.

Goodday Eugene, Freezing cold here in Melbourne nothing like Quebec but for us Melbournian's it has been freezing cold for the last 2 weeks. It is a long weekend this weekend celebrating the Queen's Birthday on Monday. The big Mid State Mopar Show is on for the first time this Sunday in Bendigo about 100 miles north of Melbourne. I want to display Samantha with Nick's 440 Road Signs but the weather is expected to be shocking. Rain and Hail but will keep you posted. Great show in the heart of Bendigo around the town hall. First show since 2019. Hope you are well. Cheers Louis 👍

The car show a Bendigo sounds like a great event, I hope that you have better weather than predicted, and you can take Samantha, the road sign, and have a good time. Everything is good here in Texas. I hope that you are well, and that everything is ok. The 500 is just about finished, it just needs an alignment, final polishing, and a road test by Nick. Cheers to you and your family.

That stumble reminds me of my first car. It had the 352 T-bird engine and a model 4100 Autolite 4 bbl carb. The secondaries were vacuum operated using venturi vacuum off one of the primary venturis. It would stumble when you stomped the accelerator. I noticed that the vacuum actuator lever had 2 holes for the linkage and it was in the inner hole. I moved it to the other hole and it solved the problem. The first time I stomped it after the car nearly went sideways into a power pole. If you stepped into to get a full power, no spin takeoff she would get to about 30 mph and then you could hear the secondaries kick in. With that car that was your best takeoff. If you did a tire burning takeoff it would actually take longer to get up to speed. I had a limited slip rear end and it would spin both tires every time. It would pass almost anything but a gas station ⛽

I heard the term “torque monster” for years back in the day. It wasn’t until I started learning about engines much later that I learned that what this really refers to are engines with low HP levels compared to torque. Usually the result of restrictive heads that cause the engine to run out of breath at higher RPM’s.

We had both, a 70 Challenger R/T 440 4V and a 70 Hemi Cuda both 4-speeds and both had super track packs with Dana's and 4:10 gears. The Hemi was a fully built street motor and the 440 was almost stock. Every time I drove the Challenger, I would over rev it trying to get it to pull but it hated any sort of higher RPM and felt like it had a governor, just way under carbureted with the AVS. Nice seeing Steve in the dyno room and keep pumping out the videos I love them.

I watched another mopar enthusiast called Simpson speed on you tube and they built a 440 stroked to 505 with trick flow 240 heads a solid .562 flat tappet cam and it made 668 h.p. with only 33 degrees timing. And now I watch you with a .030 over 440 and it makes 425 h.p. with the factory manifolds 😮. Both engines are pretty stout.

You also increase cylinder pressure with each pull due to the rings seating in. I bet after 500 miles in the car you can get another 5-10hp out of it. And you will also be pulling in more fresh forced air from outside the engine bay with that air box.

this may sound odd. but back in 1977 when I had my 1973 Dodge Charger, I installed and tuned the engie and six pack. I found that by installing two different springs (from the Holley spring tuning kit for vacuum secondary's) in the vacuum diaphragms, I could tune the six pack so there was no stumble at all. since the 2 outboard carbs are linked together, it essentially acted like a dual rate spring. i found where it just started to stumble, then i went one spring firmer, and all of the stumble totally went away. just something to put in your bag of tuning tricks. by the way, I LOVE YOUR CHANNEL!

Great job as usual Nick! Great seeing a healthy 440 Six Pack pull on your Dyno. Two of my best friends back in the early 70's drove Molar muscle. Joey had a 70 Four Barrel 426 Hemi Cuda, John had a 70 Six Pack 440 Challenger, both 4 speeds with Pistol Grip shifters. Of course they raced many times. Can't really say one was quicker than the other, whoever got the better launch off the line usually won, they were that close. I always leaned towards the 440...The Hemi back then was getting all the attention of a Beauty Queen with no mention of it's high maintenance costs!!!! Whereas the 440 was like the girl next door, always got the job done with no fuss and with legs just as pretty as a Beauty Queen!!!!!!

This is why races between the 426 cars & the 440+6 cars were close. The 440+6 is an impressive engine for being a factory developed unit more than 50 yrs ago

This is true, for the secondaries to work properly, air cleaner must be on these carbs, they are totally reliant on strong vacuum signal, which will increase with air cleaner in place, also you may have to change the springs in the diaphragms, increase the power valve size in center carb, and increase the size of metering plates in outboard carbs. these items all provide a smooth transition from low speed circuit to high speed circuit. You are very lean!!

hi nick i reran the end twice and looked at your #'s sheet on the last run without air cleaner. i dont know if you noticed but the hp jumped at last minute at 5300 rpm to 427.3 indicating the engine may make more power at higher rpm. you have highlighted 426.5 at 4800 rpm

Hey Nick, I was 18 years old and I had a 1970 Plymouth sport fury with a 383 with a holly 4barrel and I had it in my dads shop to change the oil and filters and tune it a little and I drained the oil and changed the oil filter but I used some Varosol cleaner to wash out the pan of any grit etc. This 383 had a dual point distributor and I was going to set the new points I got for the tune up and I changed the plugs as well. I left the oil fill cap off the valve cover and I had my girlfriend engage the engine to turn the distributor to the top of the cam to set one set of the points. Well the varosol mixed with the old oil creating fumes that ignited and of course I was leaning over the oil filler and the flames briefly blinded me and toasted the hair on my arms and head. The lesson I learned was to never ever wash out an engine with Varosol. It scared the crap out of my girlfriend and me but we laughed about it when I could see again. I thought you may enjoy a laugh. Don’t work to hard.

I had a 440 six pack in a 72 'Cuda back in the day. Replaced the stock 340. I wish I had Nick around to keep those carbs tuned correctly! It wasn't easy. it actually got better gas mileage, than the 4 barrel double pumper, until you get into the throttle. 😏😏 Had the 272 rear end. Allegedly, you could bury the needle on the 140mph speedometer. Allegedly.

We are indeed fortunate, to have you on KZread, dropping your knowledge about the fine tuning, unseen or unexpected ways of getting that extra power from engines, testing them out, getting the results you expect,or you dig harder. Youve got a work ethic so rare these days. Always putting in extra time for costumers You brighten my day when I watch your videos. Thanks again and God bless you Nick.❤️

I vaguely remember making a comment about testing with the air cleaner on when you were changing jets, or maybe metering rods on something, I want to say it was a little first generation Hemi, maybe a Red Ram? Forgive my bad memory. I can't remember exactly which one it was but you were trying to make it run a little richer, and on that thing the stock air cleaner looked much more restrictive. I remember thinking the air cleaner might make it just a little richer, possibly making you're adjustments too rich with the air cleaner installed after the dyno session. In this video even with completely different parts and engine, I was still hoping to get a comparison of any possible differences in fuel mixture with the air cleaner installed. But this time you only focused on the power numbers.

Tested a 440-6pack not long ago and I thought it was funny that the customer just loved the way the engine would bog/stumble when the outboard carbs flopped open. I asked him how it was to drive on the street and he said it was like getting rear-ended--I said that's dangerous and not how vacuum secondaries are supposed to work. Hint--You're not supposed to be able to tell when the secondaries open-supposed to be and can be "tuned" properly but hey if the guy wants to punch it on a damp or dusty road and possibly wreck--to each their own.

Hello Nick, thank you for sharing the comp. Cam part # in this video. A lot of the mopar performance cams were racer Brown cams sold thru direct connection. Recently I had Jim at Racer Brown grind me a St - 14 cam. This cam is a solid lifter cam with 236 ° at .050 lift with .340 lobe lift. I am using 1.6 ratio rockers. A Preformer RPM manifold. 870 vaccum secondary. Hooker 1 7/8 headers. I just wish that I could afford some Trick flow 240 heads. This cam is susposed to work with 3.23 -3.91 gears and has a 2000 to 6000 rpm power band . It only has a 108° lobe speration angle.
