Rebuilt 22RE Starting Problem

Fully rebuilt 22RE. Crank, no start. Any suggestions?

    Those tend to be high reving motors. Nice rebuild! The only thing would be your timing, but probably figured that out by now. Thank you!

    Freakin beautiful man, nice lookin rebuild! Got an issue with my Air Flow sensor, I think... Mine looks like crap but it's run like a champ to this point, 198k.

    Some times It's All Internal, TDC u can't see, but u have to make sure it's set then u insert the distributer with rotor pointing to 1 or 11 o'clock!

    I have the same truck. Added A/C when I got it. I need to know what vacuum line parts I need. It has been running hard wired to the compressor. I got the evaporator/box, refrigerant lines from a junk yard. Using new condenser/parts. I bought an A/C switching valve that plugs into an extra plug on the wire harness under the hood on top of the valve cover, but there is still a few parts to make it run from the evaporator box idle knob. I should be able to get what I need from Lakeland Toyota, which is where I get most of what I need "stock" from. When looking at the diagrams, there is different part numbers for the same parts. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    i had the same problem on a 93 pickup 22re, i had removed the egr, resonator, etc, i put them back on and it started. am not sure if that was it or something else.

    i have a 93 22r3 phase 3 engine from Yota1 I'm fixing to change mine out with cant wait to hear it run but too busy to put it in right now 😢😢

    Just check if you need to put the distributor on 180 degrees at tdc

    You probably have a ground wire disconnected some where. That will cause this to happen. Also if your CPS crank position sensor is disconnected, that will cause a crank no start issue as well.

    Firing order is 1,3,4,2. Did you change that or just read it off wrong?

    Check grounds and pulse on injector put starting fluid and crank it

    Know I'm late, but What he said. I had same problem. Pack oil pump with grease. Won't sump when empty.

    Clean the throttle body and adjust idle speed. Maybe clean the MAF

    Check the fuel injectors coldstar valve.; it need spray gasoline. And you suppose to see.

    Make sure 3 and 4 injector wires aren't crossed the last 2 injector wires could be crossed that's what happened to me bro

    Ok so it turns out my timing was 180 degrees off. I corrected and it started right up. Stupid mistake lol. It seems to be idling good. I have not driven it yet. A slight clack or two when dropping RPM fast. Not sure if that is normal or not

    Good to hear that the truck is running. After a 500 mile break in period you'll want to readjust the valve lash, that help with the noise level.

    Did you ever get the oil pressure light to work? Missing connection or? This is weird, but I had one engine that after I would work on it would clack like you are describing until I shut it off and completely rotated the engine a couple times by hand from the crankshaft pulley bolt, finishing at TDC #1 Compression stroke. Then I would start it and it would be fine from there forward (until I worked on it again.) It was almost like it wanted to be started on that initial start up from a tensioned position. The nightmare scenario is that the oil pressure driven timing chain tensioner bolts were run in too tight and the tensioner is warped, not letting the tensioner extend and compress with oil pressure properly. Those bolts are only supposed to be run in to 12 ftlb max. If the tensioner isn't doing its job you'll get the clacking.

    It turns out the crankshaft company I got the reman from messed up with the spacing on the mains so I have to redo them to stop losing oil pressure. The connector to the dummy light it kind of jerry rigged on. I intend to do a swap for the SR5 cluster and use a gauge at some point.

    Ah jeeze, that sucks. Any damage to the crank's main bearing surfaces? When you do swap in the SR-5 Dash just remember that you HAVE to get the right oil pressure sending unit for that dash. The idiot light oil pressure sending units have a different resistance than the sweep gauges and if you run the wrong one with the sweep gauge you'll blow the gauge out.

    I have a 1994 22re i and rebuilding had everything labeled and one of the kid came by and took the labels all off so now I have no idea where anything goes

    Always take pictures and or video as you are taking stuff apart. It’s saved my so many times even back in the days of film cameras.

    22re del 94, 312,000 millas: the same thing happened to me, I was 360 degrees in exhaust stroke instead of compression, rotate at 5 degrees take out the distributor and I gave it a 360 degree turn and place the distributor with the rotor to the cable 1 and ignited immediately, the only thing that the clutch of the AC compressor does not start, what could it be?

    You obviously had the distributor out when this happened right I am just trying to figure out what the heck is wrong with mine it's driving me nuts here and great when I parked it now it won't start I almost think it sounds like the timing may be off but how could that be possible if it was never out and it was running when I parked it

    What paint did u use on the motor just doing the same thing just bought new head k. Black post oms the works might need to pick your brain about some things and what did u use to clean the intake and valve cover

    I used degreaser for most of the cleaning. Wire wheels as well and follow up with dish soap to get the degreaser off. Then brake clean to prep for paint.

    Re-stake distributor gear and flip it it's probably upside down.

    Question and if you can help me diagnose it I will fix it and if it is what is wrong with it I will send you a hundred bucks cash in the mail in a card I have 86 Toyota 4Runner has a 22RE EFI I drove at home from work a little over a month ago went to leave for work the next morning and it would not start if I hold my foot to the floor it sounds like it wants to start but it will not start if I let it sit for a couple days it will fire a couple times and then nothing it is getting really bad feeling and frustrating as it is my only means of transportation and I wish I could figure out what was wrong with it it does have 200,000 miles on it but it was running when I parked it it has a brand new fuel pump fuel filter throttle position sensor cap rotor distributor plugs couple other parts I have swapped out computers because I had a spare I checked the fuel pump relay to make sure it was working when starting it to turn the fuel pump on. I kept the cold start injector took it out cleaned it. It has fuel coming out when turning engine over I'm just trying to figure out if something with the timing could be bad if it was running when I parked it but it's just weird it seems to kind of want to start for a second if I hold it right to the floor being fuel injected but it has fuel going to everything anybody have any clue what this may be please I need serious help and again I am willing to send $100 cash to whomever solve this problem for me so I can fix it please

    You put the distributor in wrong. Or engine was TDC on exhaust stroke instead of compression. Bring it to TDC, check that the rotor finger is pointing to the number 1 cyl. If the distributor where a clock, it should be at 11:00.

    Ya I am on there too. Tried pretty much everything they have thought of. I am thinking at this point either the injectors or the timing is somehow off

    I am currently having a similar problem in a 1986 toyota pickup with the 22re. Ive tried everything, i have fuel pressure and spark as well but doesnt stay on for more than 5 secs. If i spray starting fluid in the intake it stays on but dies immediately after. Any ideas? does the igniter have any correlation with the injector pulse?

    Your distributor is not correctly set. Put it on TDC #1 and re-set the distributor.

    Andrew Napoleon ah wait with the vsv's on it? When I got rid of the egr system I had no need for most of them. I have ac so the one vsv for the ac is in the back of the intake plenum. You can see it in the video

    Ya I made it out of some this 1/16 steel. I used a piece of cardboard and poked some holes for the bolts to get the shape, then cut it out and painted it. I like how it came out.

    Check your distributor one more time, when I rebuild my 89 22re I initially had my distributor 360 degrees off (spark was occurring 5 degrees before the exhaust valve closed) , it would spin over but wouldn't start.

    No way to check it other than pulling the VC, except to pull the distributor, rotate the the engine 360 degrees, reassemble and try to start.

    Kinda late but disconnect your ac idle up and cap it it has to do with the air system. Or the idle conrol vavle could be rusted and clogged

    CAmeron miLam Ford Blue from Eastwood. Their ceramic engine paint. I primed with gray and brushed it on

    Your problem is you keep saying Uuuuhhmmm, uuuuhhmmm, uuuhhhhmmm.....too much talk!! I had the same problem, until I changed the MAIN RELAY inside the GLOVE COMPARTMENT on the right cabin wall!!

    A lil late but if a 22re has fuel spark and compression and doesn't wanna start, the timing is off by 180 degrees pull the distributor and set rotor the opposite way, it's not like other motors that will fire or bang out of intake or exhaust when timing is off..
