Rebuilding VW linkpin front end - bushes, shims, brakes and more.

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

It's Wifey Wednesday! Time to do some more work on the Renault/VW Beetle project. In this round, we rebuild the complete VW Beetle front suspension. This includes king and link pins and bushes, complete brake system assembly, new wheel bearings, the works. I also show you how to set up the link pin shims correctly, to ensure wheel camber will be correct.

This is the first time I've understood the shims on a link pin, very good explanation. I have one I've been wanting to rebuild but didn't want to take it apart without understanding how it goes back together. One of my brothers learned Afrikaans many years ago, hearing you mention the language reminded me of some of his stories after he returned from living in South Africa.

Look into abrasive blasting using pressure washers. Set up a receiving pit to settle the debris. Pipe to a pick-up pit with a pump feeding the pressure washer. Add water to the system as needed. Clean out pits as they fill up. You can recycle your media for multiple passes if you are willing to screen it. It will get too dull and full of trash at some point.

Hey Div, Thank you for the refresher on the VW front suspension maintenance. Originally I learned about the workings of the VW from three wash pans full of parts that came with a floor pan and beetle body. I had a great time figuring it all out. The first time I drove that bug, my face hurt from smiling so much. That was in the early 1970's. I now have two dune buggies to rebuild. A side note you may not actually care about. In so called american english, bushes are plants such as rose bushes, flower bushes, hedge bushes and hundreds more. Bushings are items such as those you replaced on that front assembly, be they made of steel, rubber, plastic, leather or any number of materials. When you are working on any mechanical object, I think any of your follows are going to know what you are talking about when you speak in the language of the little one man shop in a forest, in South Africa ! Good show Div. Thank you

@WestsideCritters It was the summer of 74, I was 16 and in a hurry (on a promise). The first mistake I made was not backing off after snugging the bearings up and then the big F up was not securing the lock nut properly on the right hand side, I figured out the nut got spun and tightened and the rest is history.
