Wonderful work! So descriptive in your demonstration and explaining it too. Thanks very much. I'm attempting to replace full runs that are missing in my Victorian home. I'm also making my 10 yr old grandson help me. Determined to get him a good trade and he's very enthusiastic about it.

What type of plaster are you using? We have usg base and red top available to us around here, will these work?
@Dadb1230

Diesel Power We normally use a 50-50 mix of lime and molding plaster. USG or Goldbond Molding plaster. Around here Red top is gauging plaster not molding plaster. Gauging plaster will not set fast enough.

hello,sir, excellent craftsmanship, I do have a question on some work that I've done recently, what I've noticed is that after a week I've developed small hairline cracks throughout the cornice that I've ran,wasn't sure what may have happened here, iam using autoclaved finish lime and super white moulding plaster and the ratio was a 50/50 mix. Any help would be appreciated, thank you.

With a multitool/knife/padsaw cut a vertical line in your cornice. You can then stick a square bit of 1mm tin into it to trace around….this line you’ve cut can be filled with your mix later on…

Can't you do it yourself? I've done a section of Victorian coving using a similar method but off the wall and will screw and glue it into place... I think its all down to building up the layers and drying in between each layer... It can't be that difficult as Victorian builders used to do it! Good.luck with yours. X

Hold a piece of cardboard up to the molding and trim it away little by little with scissors until you have an exact match. Use that to cut a piece of plywood, and a piece of metal to reinforce the plywood so it does not wear down.
