Myself & my dad just rebuilt this Ex rental Ferrari F430 today we find out whether our hard work has paid off. We already know the engine that we rebuilt starts but the gearbox is still a question. Today i hope to get the car drive-able and take it out on its first drive but it all goes terribly wrong.

The coolant won't circulate to the front rads if you remove the stat. The stat has a bypass valve which circulates the coolant around just the engine block for quicker warm up. As the coolant gets to temp the wax pushes the main valve to the rads open at the same time closes of the engine bypass circuit. Without the stat the coolant will take the path of least resistance ie around the block and boil. Its not going to force it around the rad circuit, put a new stat in and it will be fine

Hi Mat, great series there, i enjoyd watching up to this point, if this could be helpful, that ferrari (F-430) was the first one to come out with the "E-Diff", it's basically an electronic controlled differential with variable locking, based on the setting of the "manettino", road condition, tires warn, esp setting and driving style. The "F430 Scuderia" got and updated version of it: the "E-diff 2". The "clutch plate" you found while mounting it, is essentially a real hidraulic clutch that is released or pressed by an actuator connected to a sensor and a pump, that should have it's own circuit (i guess). When a wheel slips under traction, the e-diff clutch is electronically released or pressed in order to adjust the torque, by sending more or less of it to the wheel that needs it, this is done mainly in order to maximize the traction helping the driver to have a better control of the slip angle with the gas during a power-oversteer, also on track it is used to not make you lose too much speed when fully oversteering put of a quick corner and both rear wheels wants to slip. Since this clutch is prone to wear out some owners use a thing called "Smart by-pass for the e-diff", that essentially electronically disconnect the E-diff system letting it to work as a normal open diff. My guess is that some bad pressure/mounting on the e-diff/inner clutch plate could be causing the wheel spinning while in neutral and also could cause while driving around a burning of that clutch/oil, high temps and who knows what else. I say this also cause when you pressed the brake while at idle it sounded like the force the car needed to idle was not enough anymore, like something increased instantly the gearbox drag. I'm really cheering on you for the project and i do hope you read this comment and that could be helpful to prevent some damage to it and useful for some improvement. Watch out that misfire on the right bank (before mounting the capristo exaust) and keep being meticoulus, even if that requires more time, your Ferrari needs to be perfect by carring all the love you put while rebuilding it, you can do it mate! P.S. Love the team you make with your dad, you can see on his face the smile of a young man and the joy of his 30's when the engine takes life and revs out.

I haven't seen anyone mentioning it, but in the future you can take the return line from the coolant reservoir and use brake bleeder to suck all the air out of the system as you fill the reservoir at the same time. Then you know that the system is air free when there is coolant coming out of the return with no air anymore 🙂 Also works if you have some extra bleeding nipples but that I believe is normally not the case.

Hi Mat, Let me start of by saying I know nothing about car mechanics but what I did see is that when you are vacuum filling the cooling fluid I think you are pumping in air. The hose that is running from the valve to the bottle of coolant is rather long and not primed in any way. So what is in that hose before you open the valve is air. when you then open the valve you will first pull in that air in the reservoir before it actually gets to the coolant. what could help is to either have a shorter hose or prime that hose to make sure it's filled with coolant and not air. You could prime the hose by letting the vacuum build up with the valve open at first, so you turn on the compressor to blow air across and that should then pump up the coolant. when the coolant starts shooting out you close the valve and let the system build up the vacuum in the reservoir.

You need to drain everything and start from the beginning. The airlock will not be present. this method works for all cars that has radiators in front, and engine at the back. Mat, I have one tip for you to avoid problems like you had with the release bearing connector, mark all your screws and nuts with a marking stripe (there are special paint markers for this) after they've been torqued down. This is what is done in aviation to assure each bolt is correctly torqued and it is visualy possible to see which ones are not done. I've done this with all my engine overhauls and it save an enourmous amount of headaches trying to find why something fails, not to say anything about the risk of something flying off because it was forgotten. It's easy and incredibly effective.

Congrats on the gearbox rebuild. That was pretty epic putting it together from two gearboxes without a manual. As for the coolant circulation problem, others have mentioned that the problem might be the thermostat valve. But if the fluid was flowing to the front radiator after you removed the thermostat valve and the coolant wasn't exiting from the radiator, it has to be a blockage in the front radiator itself. Not sure from the video, but that's what it looked like.

They may have received a copy of the Ferrari workshop manual (or at least the relevant pages) from someone, under the condition that they didn’t mention having received it. Ferrari are very litigious, so avoiding mentioning having breached their copyright would be best for everyone involved.

I was a mechanic at BMW in the 80s for four years and this is such a joy to watch you troubleshooting the car. My advice would've been to connect everything first obviously the vacuum leak would be compensated by the idle control valve and you're just stressing out the system and adding more drama to your build.

I used to think your hard work beats talent was just an empty phrase but it really encapsulates you so well! Oh and reddevil is right about doing your Dads dream car but very tricky to do without him knowing.

Hey Mat, solution to your coolant bleeding issues. If you get a 25l barrel or similar and put some hose fittings on it that match the ferraris. You can essentially make a 25L expansion tank that you sit on the engine. The added volume allows you to run the engine and bleed the air without it going all over. Heat cycle the engine a few times and top up as necessary. Replace og expansion tank when bled. This could be used on other tricky bleeders too 😉 Love your channels mate, you and your dad are awesome 😎

Just a thought. But you might want to invest in a couple of good industrial grade fans. As you have no air flowing through the radiators. As they would get when it is driving down a road. A great spot by Tony with the thermostat. Make sure the radiator fans are working. So when it gets hot. They kick in as they should. All the best. With this build.
