Rebuild on the fly: Brian Burke and the Toronto Maple Leafs

Спорт

With more than 25 years of NHL experience, Brian Burke has seen it all. The highs of winning a Stanley Cup, the thrill of trading for both Sedins... And the lows in managing the Toronto Maple Leafs. From Phil Kessel to Dion Phaneuf, in this video we revisit Burkie's tenure in The Six. #nhl #torontomapleleafs #hockey

Burke’s time in Toronto and Pittsburgh were very similar to me. The goal was to try and “win now” regardless of whatever position they were in with the rosters. And as stated at the beginning of the video in his very first interview, get as big as you can to try and demolish your opponents

Did the exact same thing in Calgary too. They make an unexpected run in 2015 and just like that the “rebuild” was over

I'd watched one of your other vids the other day so I subscribed ..didn't realize you were so tiny, ya don't seem like that small a channel. Your VO work is really really good. I've seen some sports KZreadrs with hundreds of thousands of subscribers who sound super stale or have terrible cadence with their voice...yours is top notch.

Much appreciated feedback. The voice is always changing. Trying to get more comfortable, find different ways of saying things. It’s a process of sorts! But again thanks for watching!

Burkie's best skill is that he can talk and make you believe in anything. He really had people believing he was going to build this team into a contender. In retrospect, his aggressiveness set us back years. The best moves he could've made were the ones he didn't have to i.e. Rask, Seguin, Phaneuf, etc. How many of his prospects actually panned out?

The Toronto Maple Leafs look great on paper, when it comes to the actual ice they get shredded.

He said a team is either rapidly ascending or descending. The Leafs were rapidly descending when he thought they were ascending. He was wrong, and we all paid for it by setting back this team 8 years.

Sidney Crosby, Patrick Kane, Tyler Seguin, Drew Doughty, Alex Ovechkin, Steven Stamkos, Nathan MacKinnon. Almost every Cup winner has at least one top 2 pick they drafted themselves.

He's a strange specimen, that's for sure. I really like his press conference quips; and as a TV personality I find him highly entertaining. But I don't know if his post-2007 resume really warrants another GM job.

I remember seeing Tyler Biggs play in a junior game a few months before he was drafted where he scored twice and dominated play. I remember being so elated when the Leafs picked him....then I saw him playing with the Marlies. The man could not receive a pass at pro hockey speeds. It was like he had nerf hands. He simply maxed out at the college and junior levels, where decent stats masked his deficiencies. His pro career turned into kicking around the ECHL for a few seasons.

When he was thrown into the Kessel trade, I wondered if he might be a sleeper piece in the deal. 11 games in Wilkes-Barre and right to the ECHL. Nope.

The Leafs are not currently built to WIN the Stanley Cup! The defense needs to get bigger and tougher and goaltending needs to be solidified, period! The team also needs to play consistent, with drive, GRIT, and urgency, each and every game? Special teams also, are a mess and need to improve substantially. Tre, GET-R-DONE!

Burke lost touch with where the game was going…speed and skill…and thought he could wheel and deal elite players from other teams. His number one centre when they made the playoffs was Tyler Bozak. A great three, not an elite centre. He did two good things in Toronto. Using cap space to bring better players, and shutting out ownership from hockey ops. Oh, yeah…the eighteen wheeler off the cliff let them draft Morgan Reilly.

What GM in their right mind would trade with the leafs. Their players are over paid, over rated and under perform in the playoffs. Scotty Bowman said the regular season is preseason to the playoffs. The Leaf organization sill doesn't get it

Look at the last 50 Stanley Cup champions, then ask yourself this: is Toronto built like any of the 50 previous championship teams? The answer is: no. Plain and simple. Overpaying for four finesse forwards, while ignoring defence and goaltending was not the template for success, and never will be as history dictates.

While I do agree with your overall statement here, the leafs aren’t built to win. I do think Matthews is exactly the guy you need in your lineup, I don’t think his inclusion as a Selke finalist this year is a fluke. He is Toronto’s version of a Toews/Kopitar because he’s a legitimate two way 1C. Morgan Reilly is not a top dman and to me that’s where the problem lies

@@brennanschaufert4076 They definitely are built to win during the regular season, but they simply aren’t built for going deep in the playoffs. One playoff series win since the inception of the core four, establishes that. Whomever put this team together clearly was arrogant and thought they could ignore the template of successful playoff teams, or, they simply are illiterate to the game in general. The experiment has been a failure, that’s for sure.
