Rebuild an Evinrude / Johnson outboard lower unit step by step. Lower unit seal replacement.

This shows how to completely rebuild a 1976 Evinrude 85hp lower unit. I needed to replace gears and seals so this shows every single step.
It will apply to almost all Johnson and Evinrude motors but parts may vary between years.

Thanks, you are the only one that breaks down the Shift assist style lower unit but I’m confused between what you show and the parts diagram. The parts diagram shows that one of the 2 plastic tube at the end of the video is called long and the other (different part number) called short, the parts numbers are 0314081 and 0314765. The repair manual doesn’t note any difference nor do you. My engine had the long interior copper water tube on the port side bent. Was this due to using the wrong length plastic tube on assembly? Or does reassembly required significant alignment struggles. I would recommend being very careful with reassembly. Thank you Johnson for this insipid design just like the shift assist. The later year units use 1 tube. Sometime these engineers need to be taken to the wood shed.

Yep so parts diagram shows a long and a short. Doesn’t matter I think that’s solely because it helped line up one tube then the other. Mine are same length. I bought it used that way years ago. Never had an issue. They’re only there as a tube guide for reassembly.

It being bent is likely due to someone not lining it up correctly.

What causes the shift assist assembly not to be able to slide up and down in the exterior piston. My was jammed them loosened but still requires significant force to move. A stupid special tool is required to tear into the caps

Not sure? I posted a video on my page of reassembly and rebuild of the lower. If your dog gear is busted it the slide mechanism of the dog gear is broken that could cause issues shifting. I have a video on all of that. Get on my page. I break down how it shifts and how to replace a dog gear too. Shoot me a follow.

You mean if you removed the shifting rod entirely and it still isn’t sliding up and down in that cylinder piston??
