Mexicans do cry deeply when they lose their loved ones. The celebration you see is because it is believed that the spirit of our dead lives one can come back and visit us the flowers on the altar are to lead their spirit back home. That is why there is joy, but also sadness.

Ya se no investigan bien, Luego por eso salen weyes diciendo que los mexicanos nos burlamos de la muerte, como si nos pusiéramos felices cuando alguien muere, y pues no, lo que yo les diría, es que actualmente es una celebración más para recordarlos, honrarlos y enfocarse en los momentos felices y en lo positivo... y que obviamente se les extraña y estamos tristes porque ya no están, pero precisamente por el respeto que se les tiene se les hace un altar, (ya sea que creas o no en eso de que vienen a visitarnos).

Bueno cada quien, cuando mi abuela murió nosotros nos acordamos de anécdotas graciosas con ella, si lloramos pero el velorio fue pura risa, un gran momento que nunca voy a olvidar , nosotros decimos que así debe ser la muerte de alguien que no le debe nada a nadie y cumplió con todos. Así quiero mi velorio

@@alejandraflores731 pero incluso investigando, cuando vienes de una cultura tan distinta es normal que pierdas el contexto de muchas cosas. La única forma es hablando con un local o nativo del país en cuestión. Incluso entre países de Latinoamérica. Por ejemplo, vos no entenderías el contexto cultural de lo que significa el tereré para nosotros los paraguayos, solo sabrías qué es, cómo se prepara y ya, pero como no lo vives o ves dentro de ese contexto pierdes valiosa información cultural.

we have regular funerals, this is largely a catholic country by colonization, and catholic traditions mixed with the traditions of our ancestors, so when a person dies, whenever it happens we have a solemn funeral in general and church service for those who practice the religion; the day of the dead is an annual celebration of the day when our ancestors believed their dead could come back in spirit for a day and that's why we have altars with their picture and their favorite things in life (especially foods and drinks).

Uuh if by solemn you mean mariachis singing while we bury the casket, sure. Youre forgetting the novenarios, 9 days of praying and hanging around with the family, eating, talking, etc. Im sure im forgetting many parts of it tho

De hecho es una celebración de varios días, claro si se hace de la manera más tradicional, se inicia el día 28 de octubre para recibir las almas que tuvieron muerte trágica/accidental, 29 se reciben a los ahogados, 30 es para las almas olvidadas, 31 las almas en el limbo, 1 de noviembre se reciben a los angelitos (niños) y se mezcla con la celebración católica "Día de todos los santos", el 2 de noviembre se recibe a todos los muertos adultos y coincide con la celebración católica de "Fieles difuntos". Actualmente se ha perdido esa tradición de varios días y se ha vuelto un tanto más comercial sólo el 1 y 2 de noviembre pero no les miento, pregúntenle a sus abuelitos. 🤗

As long as the memory of your loved ones stays in your heart, they never really die, they live forever.

"Día de muertos" is a way (at least in my family) to reconnect with those that have passed on, to wish them happiness and at least during the festivities to include them in our daily life even if they aren't physically with us. Yes, we still hurt for those that have passed away, we still cry for them. But we become overjoyed at the fact that we can _still_ honor their memories and lives by making it a celebration of their lives and accomplishments. Lots of love from Mexico!

In some places of Mexico we start since the day 28th, and it's not a parade like in the capital of the country, we just make our ofrendas and go to the cemeteries, we prepare the traditional candies and eat it together. It depends in which part of Mexico you are. We even have different kind of breads depending of the state.

The Day of the Dead is a celebration that has been held in Mexico sice pre-Hispanic times by the original indigenous people and was inscribed on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO in 2008 (originally proclaimed in 2003). Therefore, it is a celebration that belongs only to Mexico, but that is loves to share with the whole world.

El día de los santos inocentes o muertos chiquitos se celebra el primero de noviembre, es cuando las almas de los niños regresan a ver a su familia. El día 2 de noviembre regresan las almas de los muertos grandes. El 31 de octubre es un festejo de EU que México ha adoptado para disfrazarse y pedir dulces, pero no es originario de nuestro hermoso país. Los chilangos empezaron a hacer su desfile de "Catrinas" después de que lo vieron en la filmación de la película de James Bond "Specter". Los de Hollywood inventaron una "tradición Mexicana" que los chilangos adoptaron como propia inmediatemente. .

Del 27 al 29 se le celebra a las ánimas olvidadas o de muerte trágica. El 31 a los no nacidos y no bautizados. El 1 a los infantes. El 2 a todos los difuntos y ancestros. cada una de las familias lo celebran muy diferente por tanta desinformación y por la llegado de los españoles. el 1 de noviembre se celebra a los no nacidos , 2 nov a los niños. 3 nov a los adultos, 4 nov a los adultos mayores, 5 nov las tumbas olvidadas (Desconocidos) el resto del mes de dedican a estar al lado del familiar difunto.ñ

It's a day to have our dear ones, to celebrate, honor and remember them for 1 day a year. It's a connection to the after life that it's strong that day, and you have to give them food, the one they liked most when they were alive, if they don't get any, they have to walk back to the death realm with an empty stomach :( I will make "Tamales" and Hot Chocolate and other foods that mom really enjoyed. They really never leave, just we are unable to feel them any more with our physical senses. :)

We as Mexicans do grief when we loose someone that is important to us, we cry and ask why, but that doesn't stop us from thinking that they are still here with us, they're watching over for us, so with time is more like a form to feel more connected with those who parted before us, so at the end is a Happy festival than a sad time

El punto es que no es una costumbre de TODOS los Mexicanos, es algo más bien determinado por cuestión étnica y cultural de la región de México de donde eres, como muchas otras tradiciones Mexicanas. .

@@silviaroman2965 : Así es, yo soy de Guadalajara y aunque sé que es una tradición en Michoacán, Estado de México y algunos otros estados del sureste y golfo del país como Oaxaca, Guerrero y Veracruz, en lo personal nunca he conocido una persona que practique esas tradiciones y costumbres Mexicanas, nunca he visto un Altar De Muertos "en vivo" solo en la tele, fotos y videos o películas, se muy bien de que se trata la tradición pero no es algo que se acostumbre donde yo he vivido, éso no le quita que sea cien por ciento Mexicano, pero nuestro país es un mosaico cultural, por ejemplo también sé de tradiciones de los Yaquis de Sonora, pero nunca las he visto "en vivo", o de los Tarahumaras de Chihuahua, pero éso no significa que no las valore y las considere Tradiciones Mexicanas. De hecho el Pan De Muerto no se conseguía en Guadalajara hasta hace unos 20 o 25 años, hasta que empezó a llegar gente de la Ciudad De México a Guadalajara y lo empezaron a buscar en los supermercados para el Día De Muertos fue cuando lo empezaron a vender y lo conocí, pero no es algo que acostumbremos comprar o consumir. En mi familia se les manda decir una Misa en el aniversario de su fallecimiento a los familiares más cercanos y hasta ahí, pero no se hace nada el Día De Muertos. Ultimamente con las películas gringas COCO y la de James Bond "Specter" empezaron a salir cosas ajenas que en realidad no tienen nada que ver con la celebración tradicional del Dia De Los Muertos, como el desfile de "Catrinas" en la Ciudad De México, que no era una costumbre, pero como unas escenas de la película se filmaron ahí en 2015 que incluían un desfile con una coreografía diseñada por los de la película que incluía carros alegóricos fantasmagóricos, bandas de música tipo escuel gringa, gente maquillada de la cara para simular "calaveras", y unas "Catrinas" gigantes, ahora los chilangos ya lo adoptaron como "Tradición" y hacen el desfile (inventado por los gringos de Hollywood) cada año en esas fechas. O sea que ya tienen otra "tradición Mexicana" pero inventada en Hollywood, y bien felices ellos. Y también el mentado Jalogüin de los gringos ya lo revolvieron con las celebraciones del Día De Muertos. .

@@s1gmundfr3ud hombre, mas que "mezclarse" con el dia de muertos halloween esta recuperando su motivo original,aun siendo por influencia de dia de muertos siendo que esta celebracion tiene un transfondo similar a nuestro dia de muertos El año céltico concluía el 31 de octubre, en el otoño, cuya característica principal es la caída de las hojas. Para ellos significaba el fin de la muerte o iniciación de una nueva vida. Esta enseñanza se propagó a través de los años de generación en generación. La costumbre era dejar comida y dulces afuera de sus casas en manera de ofrenda. Por otro lado, era común encender velas para ayudar a las almas de los muertos a encontrar el camino hacia la luz y descanso al igual que el dia de muertos fue el cristianismo quien convirtio esta tradicion antigua celta (incluso mas vieja que el dia de muertos) en una mezcla rara de cosas, pues su nombre actual deriba de "All Hallow´s Eve" o "Vispera de todos los santos" tambien del como las tradiciones cambian, al dia de hoy la catrina es casi algo infaltable en dia de muertos pero su origen era el de ser una mofa a los "nuevos ricos" de la epoca, y ahora es casi un sinonimo de las celebraciones

Además de que la celebración original del Dia De Muertos por las comunidades indígenas Mexicanas precede a la llegada de los Españoles y el Cristianismo a lo que hoy es México, o sea no tiene raíces en el Cristianismo. Y el personaje de "La Catrina" lo creó el caricarurista José Gpe. Posadas en sus famosas "Calaveras" sarcásticas por el Día De Muertos para ridiculizar a los que siendo campesinos de origen indígena (principalmente de los estados aledaños a la Ciudad De México, como Puebla, Hidalgo, Edomex, Tlaxcala) cuando vendían sus cosechas de garbanzo se compraban ropa que ellos veían que usaba los criollos ricos y sus mujeres o "catrinas" tratando de imitarlos y no ser vistos como indígenas, y Posadas las llamaba originalmente "Calaveras Garbanceras" y posteriormente el muralista Diego Rivera incluyó ese personaje en uno de sus famosos murales y de ahí nació "La Catrina". Pero en chilangotitlán no había desfile de Catrinas hasta que lo hicieron para una escena de la película Specter de James Bond, y de ahí en adelante, de manera semejante a como los "garbanceros" del siglo XIX imitaban a los criollos, los chilangos lo adoptaron y lo convirtieron en una "tradición Mexicana", e igual a lo que hacen algunos Mexicanos que ahora celebran el Jalogüin para parecer gringos, y ponen sus adornos jalogüinescos en sus casas y sacan a sus chilpayates a pedir Jalogüin. Yo crecí en el Norte de México y el día de muertos se celebra diferente, extrictamente el 1 y el 2. Me imagino que en Janitzio y allá por allá se ha de celebrar desde el 31 en la noche. Ya he visto varia gente posteando que se celebra desde el 31. No siempre las cosas son como uno cree. Hay muchos "Mexicos" y todos igual de bonitos.

the tradition says that in 2th november, our close ones who's death, come with us to share the day. The altar goes with food, alcohol, tobacco, or whatever our family one enjoy in life. Cempasuchil flowers, incense and colors, go with the altar. its not a date of sadness, it is a date of joy because our family and friends come to enjoy togheter.

Okay Mexican from Guadalajara, México here, what they say in the video is mostly not true in the way that they are "Mexican Traditions", I'll explain this: the Day Of The Dead celebration has been mostly performed in parts of México with a majority of indigenous population, especially in the state of Michoacán and the state of México (not the country, the state or province) and in some parts of the South-East of México like the state of Oaxaca and the state of Guerrero. Until about 20 years ago it was not a "national" thing in terms of most Mexicans knowing about it, and even less with Mexicans performing the rituals associated with the celebration; I have never in my life seen an "Altar De Muertos" in person, I have seen them on TV, on photos and in the movies, but I don't know a single person who follows those customs and I have never been to a cemetery to witness somebody perform those rituals, yes, I knew about them from school, in the History class, but while growing up in Western México it was something we knew was a traditional ritual in other parts of México. But then, two things happened that helped make those traditions internationally known (although in some distorted ways that have nothing to do with the original celebration) two Hollywood movies, the movie COCO and the James Bond 007 movie "Specter", and because some scenes for "Specter" were filmed in México City and the producers of the movie designed a choreography that included American-style school bands, decorated parade floats, (things foreign to México) dancers in costumes and make-up on their faces, and some large puppets resembling the "Catrinas" or characters that are associated with the Day Of The Dead celebrations. Ironically the "Catrinas" Parade in México City never took place before the filming of the movie "Specter", and it became a "Mexican Tradition" invented by foreigners while fiming those scenes for their movie in México City. Yes, Hollywood invented a "Mexican Tradition" for "Chilangos" (México City locals) that didn't exist before 2015, the year they filmed the movie. .

What you saw was a parade for foreigners. The real tradicion happens in the cementereis where people puts flowers on the graves and the dead people's favorite food and drinks and the family stays at the grave with lighten candles and sing and also tell stories about their ancestors. Is a very beautiful way of remenbering the ones that are gone. The skull represents eternety because the skull is the hardest bone to desapeare. In the old mexican culture ther was no devil, or sins there was only consequences. Thanks is hard ti explain cause this are very old tradicions that happened before Spanish conquerors destroyed everything. Thanks..

Empieza el 28 en algunos estados de mexico que el cdmx comienza el 1 no significa que a sus alrededores empieza igual por ejemplo a los alrededores de puebla se empieza el 28 de octubre para los accidentados y asi cada día para otra personas hasta el 2 en la noche que se van auque estos dias pueden cambiar su significado dependiendo del lugar que estes

De hecho es una celebración de varios días, claro si se hace de la manera más tradicional, se inicia el día 28 de octubre para recibir las almas que tuvieron muerte trágica/accidental, 29 se reciben a los ahogados, 30 es para las almas olvidadas, 31 las almas en el limbo, 1 de noviembre se reciben a los angelitos (niños) y se mezcla con la celebración católica "Día de todos los santos", el 2 de noviembre se recibe a todos los muertos adultos y coincide con la celebración católica de "Fieles difuntos". Actualmente se ha perdido esa tradición de varios días y se ha vuelto un tanto más comercial sólo el 1 y 2 de noviembre pero no les miento, pregúntenle a sus abuelitos. 🤗

Como aborrezco que desde coco todos quieren opinar sobre una TRADICIÓN ancestral de nuestras raíces, cuando sólo saben lo que vieron en la peli y algunos datos. La abuelita coreana es un amor❤

All Saints Day November 1 & All Souls Day November 2 are celebrated by Catholic Countries including South America (Latin) and The Philippines. It is a remembrance of past loved ones. This 2 days people go to Church and pray and afterwards clean the tombstones then eat and be merry. Christians "do not worship ancestors" like Buddhists & Shinto. All "Souls Day" The intent is for the living to assist those in purgatory. (Specifically Catholics)

our traditions pre-date colonization, a lot of them had to be disguised as a catholic thing to avoid prosecution, and with time they ended up merging together, that's why Mexico does have a very particular way of celebrating these days

You should explain to her that the dead comes to the altar at night for dinner, as it is prepared and served at the grave or altar where the whole family joins for praying and stories all 3 nights for all dead, the costume is prehispanic, and dead itself is a stage on the journey, not the end

1:09 Ummmmm..... here in Mexico we don't celebrate the Day of the Dead on October 31st. That would be Halloween (which BTW it's not a Mexican holiday per se, but it can be celebrated just for the funsies nonetheless). Día de los Muertos is on the 1st (honoring children) and 2nd (honoring adults) of every November. Edit: Day of the Dead parades were not a thing done here until that James Bond movie "Spectre" came out back in 2015.

Oh, actually, these traditions were created in prehispanic times, meaning that they were traditions born in and practiced in what we now call Mexico, not created or celebrated by Spain.

Mexican guy here. There are some inaccuracies with the Mexican Day of the dead in this video. - Day of the dead is November 2, November 1 is for kids who died in childhood but November 2 is the actual celebration. - In Mexico only certain places celebrate October 31 which is actually halloween, mostly northern states that neighbour United States, but thse states also celebrate Deay of the dead. - The parade you mention is actually rather recent. Originally there were no such things as parades, some towns or cities have a sort of procession, similar to a funeral or a religious procession from a church to a cementery, and while in those towns and cities is very common, is not nationally common. The parade in Mexico City started because of a James Bond film where at the opening scenes, James Bond is in a Day of the dead parade, the parade was fictional at the time, but many people from abroad started asking why there wasn't a parade on Day of the dead and the Mexico City goverment created one very similar to the James Bond film in order to have more tourists come in that time of the year to the city. So, while currently the parade is kind of a thing in that particular date, but is not really tradition, is just some tourist promotional stunt. - In the Day of the dead, families visit the graves of their loved ones and bring flowers, usually cempazuchitl(Mexican marygold) but other kinds of flowers are also allowed, and the food and beverages that the deceased liked when he or she was alive. Also families have altars in their homes with pictures of their loved ones, the altar have candles, sugar skulls, a particular kind of bread known as "bread of the dead" which is kind of sweet. - The Pixar move Coco does portray day of the dead almost perfectly, there are some inconsistencies but is 90% accurate. There might be more inaccuracies in this video but those are the ones I noticed.

El 31 de octubre es Halloween, celebración estadounidense del día de las brujas que se ha adoptado en México, pero NO es parte del festejo por días de muertos. El 1 de noviembre para angelitos o muertos en la infancia o recién nacidos y día 2 para los muertos adultos. Hay diferencia en como vivir esos dos días, pero lo más generalizado es poner altar, comer juntos y arreglar las tumbas con flores en los panteones. La conmemoración más vistosa es la de los purépechas en la Isla de Pátzcuaro, Michoacán.
