Reason 12 Combinator II Deep Dive - Background Tutorial

In this video, we'll take a deep dive into Reason 12's Combinator II, a powerful tool for creating complex sounds and effects. We'll explore the Combinator II interface and its various components, including the Programmer, Modulators, and the advanced routing options.
First, we'll start with a brief overview of the Combinator II interface, including its eight macro knobs and display. We'll then dive into the various devices and patches that are available in the Combinator II, including synths, effects, and utilities.
Next, we'll explore the Programmer, which allows you to map parameters from the devices to the eight macro knobs. We'll cover how to assign parameters to the knobs and adjust their settings, as well as how to save and load Programmer settings.
After that, we'll take a look at the Modulators, which can be used to modulate the parameters of the devices in the Combinator II. We'll explore the various types of modulators available, including LFOs, envelopes, and sequencers, and show how to use them to create complex and dynamic sounds and effects.
Finally, we'll dive into the advanced routing options in the Combinator II, including how to use the Spider Audio Merger & Splitter to route audio and CV signals between devices, and how to use the CV inputs and outputs on the Combinator II to control other devices in Reason.
Whether you're a beginner or an experienced user, this deep dive into Reason 12's Combinator II will give you a comprehensive understanding of this powerful tool and its many features. So join us for this in-depth exploration of the Combinator II and discover how it can take your music production to the next level.

    Great. On the surface it seems a bit intimidating but as I'm watching and doing it, it becomes very straightforward and intuitive. Thank you.

    The dumb fact that i can combine a combinator with another combinator . It's freaking 👌. And technically speaking this is just mind blowing. This is the best update so far.

    Great video 👍 Always loved the Combinator. But like you I have long since wished we had more controls to work with. So the Combinator 2 has really exceeded expeditions. It’s what I dreamed of but thought my ideas were a bit pie in the sky. But they’ve been surpassed! And by all accounts this is just the beginning and its possibilities will only grow. Very exciting.

    Nice vid, i'm digging the Combi II as well. I do wish they would've put some level controls on the Combi mixer. My first move is still to add either the 6:2 or 14:2 mixer. Even a simple single knob on the combi mixer would've been nice.

    Its a pity you cant map so many controls... I wanted to control the steps and the resolution of a matrix to make some abstract sound. but you can only switch patterns... so this could be a work around

    is there a way for mw to make an effect chain using the combinator ?

  • @higherhz

    @higherhz

    2 жыл бұрын

    The Combinator is all about making chains of synths and/or effects that you can save and recall. I am sorry but I don't understand your Q: "mw" normally means Mod Wheel and that doesn't make sense. If you meant "me", sure but you a) need Reason (R12 for Combi II) and b) to practice a bit to get to know how it all works. Once you understand how any process (hardware/vst) works you can make just about anything you encounter - to at least some degree in a Combi II :-)

    can you put a combinator inside a combinator now?

  • @higherhz

    @higherhz

    2 жыл бұрын

    No Combi inside a Combi (trying it right now). That may seem like a limit but it could become somewhat infinitely recursive and nasty things happen. You can line up several Combis and Combine them but the result is probably not what you had before so not always the right solution (just as before). Each Combi (esp of the 2-type) can be like a complete solar system so one inside another is probably going to become unwieldy. You can however put many Combis in a row inside the Insert box which is new & improved.

    They really need to add a super knob option so you can map lots of things and different ranges just like on a Yamaha Montage.

  • @higherhz

    This is exactly what any/every Combinator knob/button has always done. They just don't pulse like an alien egg about to burst forth a face-hugger lol

  • @lucian6172

    @@higherhz It has a very long way to go to match the super knob from Yamaha. The Combinator has only very basic options but it doesn't match the super knob. Still nice to see that they added some built-in options for editing the front panel because the Reason SDK was completely useless in that area.

    I think it is good but im afraid . it looks like we have lost some capabilities :( . I don't think we can deal with negative numbers like we used to . this is meaning that .. certain work arounds are not working properly!

    @@OriginNowSoundWhat kind of negative numbers do you mean? I would be surprised if we lost the ability to do something with the combinator as then it would lose backwards compatibility

    @@Pippy_Pappy I remember watching something saying that they changed something with the scale values, they said they made it better it works alittle difrently. Tbh with a lot of tinkering and getting used to it it pretty much dose work to some degree. you just have to balance the values in a difrent way. You are right about the backwards compatibility and I thought the same thing. It surely is upgraded some how but it is definitely different. And takes a different approach to achieve the results. Thanks for chiming in and connecting!

    Shame we have to zoom in to be able to get a hold of the handles though lol ..the plus minus seemed to be fine but we shall see. Am I right that we have lost the ability to go into negative numbers. I can not find how to get the negative numbers appear like they used to! . any idea how to over come this or have you noticed this? maybe im missing something. please help!!

    I kindos managed to work it out. Its a little difrent you just have to balance the source values , it's jot quite the same but , I think for most things it works but . Have figured out how to do things like make the buttons work inverted yet any tips show me. It has to be sorted compatible with old combinator so hopefully everything still works , just got to get my head round it!
