Rear View Mirror Options for Electric Bikes

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

electricbikereview.com/forum/... While visiting my friend, Chris Nolte, at Propel Bikes in Brooklyn, NY, we spent some time going over the different types of bike mirrors and talking about safety. In some parts of the world, bicycle mirrors are actually a requirement. Germany requires them for Class 3 speed pedelecs, for example. I had never really explored the options or learned how to use a bike mirror before this, but I see the value in keeping track of your surroundings. Many people use ebikes as a means of transportation in the city and I have used them for commuting to work. Sometimes you really need to be focused ahead vs. looking back over your shoulder, and that's when a mirror can help. Most of them are small, adjustable, and mounted to the bike handlebar... but some options can mount to your helmet.
The mirrors that we looked at in this video guide include:
- Busch & Müller 701 Mirror: this mirror is fairly large, offers fine tune adjustment after being mounted, fits into the end of the handlebar tube, and has a spring loaded fold-in feature to reduce damage if you bump a sign post, automobile, or other obstacle when riding in tight spaces. The fold-in feature might also keep your bike handlebar from turning and causing an accident if you do make contact... it's a very cool feature. I didn't see the mirror listed on the official B&M website but here's a link to Propel: propelbikes.com/product/busch...
- Busch & Müller 901 You See Cycle Star: this mirror is medium sized and round, offers a bit of fine tune adjustment after being mounted, and fits into the end of the handle bar tube, and also folds in but does not spring back out on its own. You can see this mirror at amzn.to/2OCyHu9 and since it's compact, it might be good for smaller ebikes that fold.
- Ergotec M-99: this mirror is fairly large, offers fine tune adjustment after being mounted, clamps onto the handle bar, and does not appear to have a fold-in feature. You can see more details about this bike mirror at their official website here: www.ergotec.de/en/products/sp... this one is made for e-bikes and rated for 45km/h speeds.
- Ortlieb UltraLight Bike Mirror: this mirror is fairly large, offers fine tune adjustment after being mounted, clamps onto the end of a handle bar, does not have a fold-in feature but also does not stick out. You can see more details on the official Ortleib website here: ortliebusa.com/product-catego... it's a good option for lightweight road bikes.
We also talked about handlebar diameter and opening sizes during this video and Chris explained that most handlebars are 25.4" wide at the ends, and that most grips and mirrors should fit. In North America, in most place it would make sense to mount a mirror on the left handlebar (since bikes ride on the right side of the street), but there are places in Europe where you'd want to mount this to the right handlebar. Some mirrors are side-specific, so it's something to be mindful of when you're mirror shopping.
Some mirrors mount into the end of a bike bar, others clamp onto the outer portion of the bar and can be positioned above or below, inside or outside of the grip. It's a good idea to simulate turning with a mirror before actually riding a bike, so you know that it won't hit your knee or thigh. It's possible to mount two mirrors, as we see with motorcycles and some Vespa type scooters, but since ebikes do not generally ride in traffic, most only utilize one side mirror. In terms of pricing, it seems like bike rear-view mirrors range from $20 to $50 depending on the features and quality. You can see a full list of Busch & Müller bicycle mirrors at their official website here: www.bumm.de/en/products/rucks...
In addition to the bike-mounted rear view mirrors that we explored, there are also helmet-mounted mirrors. Apparently they can work pretty well, but it can create a bit of wind noise and get bumped easier when you take the helmet off. I haven't used this type of mirror myself but you can explore a bunch of options here: amzn.to/2AysoVF and finally, there are even sunglass mountable rear view mirrors that are removable. These are the smallest option of the bunch and might stay in position the best, but could add some ear and nose weight, especially if it's windy out or you're riding fast: amzn.to/2KmoqPm EBR was paid to perform this review #Sponsored We try to be honest, thorough, and fun! After bicycle commuting for over a year, I feel that a mirror is essential for safety. I like to be able to see what’s coming up behind me. I have a number of left turns and I use the mirror to make sure it’s clear before I cut across lanes. You also don’t have to take your eyes off of where you are going completely like when you turn your head to look behind you.

Exactly, those left hand turns can be tricky because it's like you want to keep an forward and not swerve by looking over your shoulder. I feel this way when turning right in an automobile, I try to always check my right mirror to be sure that a cyclist isn't coming. I've been wrapped into cars a couple of times in Austin... basically rode away unharmed, still not fun.

I can verify with great confidence that the Take-a-Look brand of helmet visor/glasses frames mirrors are excellent. Once you get used to the adjustment style, you have an amazing field of view behind you on the left and right sides with just a small turn of your head and quick sideways dart of your eye. I specifically chose it over handlebar mirrors because I love the idea of never turning my gaze away from the road in front of me. It’s almost like a heads-up-display!

Awesome! Thanks for the feedback, Kyle. I did a quick search and it looks like the ratings are pretty good... and it's pretty affordable. So the manufacturer is Bike Peddler and the product is Take a Look Cycling Eyeglass Mirror amzn.to/2veMAGT yeah?

Totally prefer “head mounted” for reasons you mention. My 1st was a dental mirror soldered to a wire with clip that quickly clamped to eyeglass earpiece, on left side. This was over 40 years ago, made by a dentist who had a sideline business. I won’t ride without a mirror, can’t enjoy because of feeling vulnerable.

Yes! When I first got my e-bike (which I chose due in part to a Linus Tech Tips video on the Rad Power Rad Wagon, subsequently leading me to EBR's review on the entire 2016 lineup, among other great reviews) I was paranoid as all get-out about taking it outside of my neighborhood because of the poor rear visibility I had without a mirror. After shopping around online and at Walmart (nearest bike shop was 30 mins away!) I found that every mirror I could afford either clamped on to the handlebars or required that I cut off a large portion of them. The grips on the Rad Mini I bought (thanks to Court's reviews on the bike) were ergonomic and rather nice, as well as incompatible with any clamp-ons. Then I found the visor-mounted mirror and saw all the good reviews, eventually snapping one up. Never looked back! (except when I had to for safety reasons =P)

Dooneegomaface Ifinnaspring - If you wear a helmet, then I’d definitely consider something like what we were talking about above! That take-a-look mirror has saved me the trouble, as it’s just a quick eyeball glance to the upper-right/left (depending on which side of the road you’re legally supposed to ride). It’s a game changer for sure.

Good Man!..I've been using the MIRRYCLE for nearly 30 years, and I'm still using one on my new ebike. As you know the optical quality and field of view of the mirror is superb, easily outclassing most modern ones. It looks classy too. I always recommend them to other cyclists.

  • @manuwilson4695

The best bicycle mirror I have ever used, and still use today is the MIRRYCLE. It is more sturdy, has better adjustment and is of better quality than pretty much any other bicycle mirror out there. The optical quality of the mirror, overall view field, material (GLASS!...not crappy plastic, like most modern ones) is absolutely superb. I'd never use anything else. AND it's still made in the good old USA!....The saddest thing about this video is that there is a MIRRYCLE on the bench, while both these blokes prattle on about all the other mirrors on display, -some of which cost TWICE as much as the MIRRYCLE, and are nowhere near the quality!...Trust me, don't waste your money, buy a MIRRYCLE.

I prefer helmet mirrors, as you don't have to look down to use them. You can keep what is in front of you in your peripheral vision while seeing what is behind you. However, helmet mirrors don't work for everyone. It depends on how quickly your eyes change focal distance. My favorite helmet mirror is the EVT Sajezone mirror

No salesperson wants to talk about this, because he doesn't use it himself and has no experience and the idea that most mirrors are useless. Due to vibration, you can't see anything or the mirror magnifies and shows little.

  • @opravduchytradomacnost

    @opravduchytradomacnost

    3 жыл бұрын

Physically, it's not complicated. The mirror must be flexible, otherwise the vibration will make it impossible to see something and it must return to its original position. It is better if the mirror does not magnify and shows the largest possible area, because the hills on the small mirror make it impossible for you to see below or above. But if you haven't tried a few mirrors, you can't say much, but you can sell them. :-)
