Change the screw for similar but with a bolt head. You'd never get a socket through the gap

You could fill the torx head with silicone too to prevent the hit entering the head. Just use a pick to get it out when you need a bulb change, be very difficult to do that with the boot shut.

Thank you - I've just been out and done this! probably more likely on the later light clusters but you never know.

Brilliant video. Really good solution with the pin headed screws. Thanks for the time you put into it all.

You need to Add a sticker, Security screws and other devices used to protect the lights. Otherwise they will out of frustration damage the equipment.

In addition to fitting the security screws, l also fitted a vibration alarm on mine. Fitted to one side (the side that gives the best cover as that's the one they will steal first). I stuck it on with double sided tape. In addition to it being am alarm, it also blocks access to the top screw. You just need to remember to press the button after you lock the car at night. You can also cut a couple of lengths of wood 30x30mm & stock them onto the side of the lights with double sided tape. That will block screwdriver access.

Not something that springs to mind until it’s too late, thanks for the advice. I plan on changing my current car in the spring for a Freelander 2 but at the moment the prices won’t stop going up on everything.

I’ve basically done the same with my Discovery 3 fitted with the latter led lights, but I also added a thin strip of alloy that I self tapped over both screws 😎🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

I fitted bike handle bar end plugs into the lower of the recessed holes and blobbed some silicon as they went in. Can be levered out when the door is open.

Thank you EZT is done with security screws and superglue screw covers. I will have to drill the covers myself now to remove so what else can you do.

Some have added a metal plate. I may try to design something which covers the screws AND fills the gap between light and bootlid

Thanks for the heads up. I've just subscribed and was recommended this channel by Simon over at powerful UK's channel on his lift video. I'm buying a Freelander 2 soon and this was the first time I've heard of this issue even didn't see it on the owner groups.

Great idea, just done mine....the answer is number plate securing screws. Had some spare in the garage, happened to be the correct screw size, and a plastic cover over...I dont think they are much to buy a couple of quid....thx

Avoid the “one-way” number plate screws as they will be a pain to remove when a bulb blows. The torx-pin type are best with the plastic caps, which is the same as what I fitted.

add a drop of super glue to the screw cap makes them harder to open up but still can but you need to get a blade in between the cap and body part of the screw cap done that to my number plates to prevent the theft of the plates

I am thinking of cutting out a long piece of metal from an old drinks can (flattened out) that can hook over the plastic and protect the screws from tampering. 🤔

Reminds me of when I had someone try to steal the head and tail lights from my Discovery 2. Those little security screws saved me a fortune! Looks like I'll be buying more of them for my HST.
