Rear brake rebuild on VW Bus

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Busaru.com - In this video I document how I rebuild the rear drum brakes on my 1977 VW Busaru project bus. There is drum, brake shoe, wheel cylinder and even some brake line action. In order to handle the new speed of the Subaru engine conversion, I needed to make sure I have good stopping power so this was a must.

An excelent u"tube explanation of an important task, well done,.I have to replace both rear LH & RH shoes & brake cylinders, your video will ensure the task is completed correctly, Thanks for your effort. RP UK, 1985 VW Jubillee Joker owned 21 years......still a beauty.

Agree totally. It's tricky fitting that spreader bar for the handbrake cable - tried it this afternoon, gave up and then watched the video. There is also a flat clip - VW part that hooks from the spreader bar to the "spring at each brake shoe" spring. The VW T3 went to having two springs instead which is a lot easier to work on (and a single adjustment wheel).

If you use acid to do the drums youll have to degrease it first! Makes them look like new and way better then glass beading because it eats the rust chemically. After your done dipping and its dry give the inside drum surface a quick buzz with some sand paper.

Sounds like there is race track nearby when the video is fast forwarded, weird. Cool video's, watched them all, very informative although I'll probably never Suburize my won bus, like the air cooled sound too much I guess.

Is it easier if you remove the spindle part?

Great video. One question: what about the brake shoe retaining pins and springs? I've had a time installing mine on my '71 bus and was looking for help, but it didn't look like you installed any...

+Hamp Ingram Mine was a 77 but in assuming they are similar. The springs on mine weren't anything out of the ordinary on drum systems. It seemed very similar to any Chevy, Jeep, or other VW's I've done. I wish I could offer some better insight!

To comment further on anothers question, you did not replace the anti rattle springs and pins. Are these not necessary?

Lubrication is not a good idea to use in a break system. a "no go"
