Reanne's Comeback: a Chance to Make History | Thepchaiya Un-Nooh vs Reanne Evans | 2013 Wuxi Classic

Спорт

From 3-0 down and 30 points behind in the fourth frame, a great comeback puts Reanne back in the match and gives her a chance to become the first woman to reach the final stages of a ranking tournament.
Thepchaiya Un-Nooh vs Reanne Evans, 2013 Wuxi Classic - Last 128.
Qualifyings in the '90s:
In the 1991/92 season, the governing body introduced prequalifying for all ranking events. There were up to 7 rounds in which around 500 players participated; the lowest-ranked started in the first rounds. Qualified players went on to play the Last-128 stage. This format was used until the 1996/97 season.
In her second season, Allison Fisher won 6 games at the 1992 Dubai Classic to reach the Last-96 stage, where she made a break of 133 but ultimately lost to Joe Swail 5-4. Nevertheless, it was her closest opportunity to qualify.
Coincidentally, that ranking event was the first-ever the Class of '92 played. John, Mark and Ronnie also lost in the Last-96 stage. They had to win 8 games as being new pros.
In their debut season, the Class of '92 played 9 ranking tournaments. Ronnie reached the final stages at 7 of them, Mark at 4 and John at 2. However, some players (later Top 16) who played under this format in the '90s did not reach any until their second and even third season as professionals.
In 1993, three debutants reached the Crucible: Spence Dunn, John Giles and Ronnie O'Sullivan. O'Sullivan and Giles won 10 qualifying matches, and Dunn, who started in the first round, won 11, still a tournament record. However, none won at the Crucible (O'Sullivan lost 10-7 to Alan McManus).

    Yes, her comeback to force a decider against Murphy was impressive. As mentioned in another thread, studies have shown that men have a greater spatial intelligence compared to women (likely evolved from hunting) - the ability to calculate 3D objects, angles, distance and speed. Strength, acceleration and reach also plays a small role in cue sports and I haven't seen female snooker players attempting long pots with full backspin. Several female players have tried to qualify for professional tournaments, but few have made it out of the first round, this performance being one of few examples.

    @@EnricoFantini Yes i have also read stuff about eye to hand coordination and things along the lines you described in the men/women subject. Certainly though the gap cant be as big as in a sport like tennis where stuff like endurance plays a role and muscle power is a lot more important. Although in the end snooker is about potting balls and doing that requires those traits you described. I guess the most balanced way would be mixed doubles but these are never really popular unless its something like serena williams and andy murray playing together. It stops being an individual sport at that point though. I still hope we get a female snooker player that makes a breakthrough as a professional.

    @@nicktrousers Yes I find it interesting to follow their progress for that reason. I suppose physical ability plays an even smaller role in target sports like darts (coincidentally I read that a woman won a game in the men's world darts championship last year for the first time). A 19 year-old woman made a maximum break last year, so perhaps the gap is closing..

  • @daviddoran1682

    I disagree. It's the law of large numbers really. Because we see men play all the time more men are interested in the game and women less interested, which leads to less women playing. Because you have so few women playing a female in the Top 10 is very unlikely. However, if we encourage women to play by showing more females playing, you never know you might see a woman in the top 10 in the next decade or two. It's not a sport of strength so woman and men should be able to fairly compete against one another.

  • @droceretik

    @droceretik

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@daviddoran1682 Totally agree. It's a numbers and percentage game. For woman to be really successful requires a critical mass of numbers. This gives the statistical probability of a larger number of women being of equally high standard as the men. It also attracts sponsorship which further adds incentive to play. Women have the disadvantage in being child bearers which can impair professional sport. For instance, how would Ronnie go if he had to bear children? Snooker is not a strength and speed game. It is a game of skill, visual acuity, judgement of angles and techniques plus practice, practice and more practice.

They believe that women are better at multitasking and men have a stronger concentration on one thing at a time. According to Wikipedia, there are sex differences in cognitive task. Eg. Men perform better at mentally manipulating objects, while women are better at verbal learning.

    @Cesar Muroya The problem with statistics as that conclusions are drawn from the mean (average). The best anyone should EVER conclude from statistics is likelihood, not certainty. There is always spread in distributions from which statistics are computed. In the case studies of men versus women, it is true that on average, men have a higher level of spatial awareness than women. However, there is every possibility that a woman could have the same spatial awareness or better than a man and likewise a man could have well below average spatial awareness. As @FlipAndLand pointed out, the most likely scenario is that fewer women have taken up the game and very few men turned out good compared to all men who play. The statistics are male biased as the game was male-centric for a very long time. In reality, if equal numbers of men and women played the game, it would be another outcome. One more thing: as the expression goes..."correlation does not imply causation". The statistics SUGGEST that men are better in snooker than women because so few women compete well against men. Now, is that because women are weaker at the game (causation implied) OR is that because there are so few matches of men vs women compared to matches played in general? You can see how one can erroneously draw the wrong conclusion by misinterpreting data. Statistics are great until they are misused and then they become the worst thing ever. My two cents. Peace all, be safe and stay well!

  • @CesarMuroya

    @CesarMuroya

    @@physicsguybrian I don't think anyone here has suggested that men are better at snooker than women because of the few wins against men. If you agree that men have better spatial awareness, then you may agree that it is one valid reason. Of course, the low number of practitioners affects, however, I think the low number of women is precisely because their best skills are different and focused on other topics. Btw, statistics is one of my skills. Stay safe too :)

I would love to see more women making it to the televised events, but Reanne is only really a top 128, maybe 64 player, in World Championship terms, at the moment and has been for many years. From there, she could free the red as she did in a later shot. But, when she did free the red, she overplayed it and left herself a long pot. There's a small but important natural male 'advantage' - men having larger hands can manually bridge some difficult shots with less difficulty. And being physically taller with longer reach reduces dependency on using the rest. So all things being equal talent wise, one would expect the very best male players to have a slight edge over the best women, statistically speaking. But that being said, there's no reason why the best player in the world can't be a femme.

    @@purplexs2506 you are in error my friend. "On average" only matters till certain stage, after that other factors take on. For eg. on average the tallest and the most atheletic kids are the best basketball players till middle school and start of high school but till the time college arrives and beyond that other factors like skill, opportunity, team player, etc take over. Big hands and tall height are minor factors when huge number of people playing the game are considered because their certainly be women tall enough for the game. What is more detrimental to the game is that this kind of thinking creates a bias in our heads.
