More and more people might face a tough time in retirement. Low-paying jobs, inflation, and high rents make it hard to save. Now, middle-class Americans find it tough to own a home too, leaving them without a place to retire.

Rising prices have affected my intention of retiring at 62, working part-time, and building my savings. I'm worried about whether individuals who weathered the 2008 financial crisis found it less challenging than my current situation. The stock market's volatility, coupled with a reduced income, is making me anxious about having enough for retirement.

Controversial Viewpoint Goal should never be FIRE !! It should only be FI that is Financial Independence Which means you should not be dependent on a job / business that sucks blood and soul out of you to give you money instead It should be "keep doing things which gives you happiness" So one should aim for FI and not FIRE.

You are smart, by not having kids and wife you don’t have to worry about 6 times of your future expenses. Also save enough and move to a small city and live peacefully. Don’t get into the fomo of not having a wife or kids. People who have them are not happy either and now they are slaves to shitty jobs in general. Several folks will ask you to get married but they will be no where when you will be stressed about money or expenses

2 things , as you rightly said, Indians do not have hobby. Very true. We are just obsessed with money and daily routine. People in west actually go on a hike , do some sports, go swimming, or any thing else in weekend, while we either watch TV or go to a mall and spend money. The second thing what you said about situation of your kids doing the same rat race. Why don't instead invest in your kids name. Like putting 1.5 Lper yr in PPF account from the day he was born and keep it funding until he starts earning. He will have a huge corpus to start his life.

For a man like me who already does not like social interactions and fake friendship/interactions and hate having someone acting like a maharaja/malik (a manager) to control me, it does not matter if anybody talks with me post retirement or not. Even before retirement now at age 40 I am very lonely, taking pills to fight depression and have seen enough (girlfriend dumping me for her job and social popularity, backstabbing by family members etc.) so it cant be worse than what I have seen in last 18 years. So your negative point of not social interaction is only applicable for those people who depends on social validation. In fact, I hate to interact with people, mostly ladies who has so many fake time pass relationships and using AI to look good. And that Google employee's example you have shown she might be another junk dependent on social validation hence regretting. For many men like me we are far happy staying away from this damn fake social stuff and live alone in nature, no matter if we eat only once a day. Our mental peace is far more important than any damn fake give and take relationship and social stuff. So FIRE is absolutely necessary.

I have a very similar story (spooky!), girlfriend broke up when I was 27 after 5 years due to job abroad, I was questioning life, had become depressed (family "history" of depression as well), became a recluse and was waiting for the end, whatever it means. Things changed when I hit mid 30s, I learned to love myself, become healthy, become selfish and yet I love nature and animals and of course, my parents, I retired early and help around at home, feed community animals, have 3 dogs of my own, loving life, hope it never ends! Self love is the first priority, next comes parents, 3rd nature and animals, dont have friends or wife, life will be a-ok, the end comes fof everyone, close your eyes and accept it when it does.

In India less than 0.5% can have the luck to retire early, in my case since I dont have to spend huge money on school+college fees on kids or wife expenditure I manage. Most have to be content with their 9-5 job, find happiness in the routine and live life like a normal person.

@@Broody-cq2yl Well everyone has their priorities and goals in life. If you are self centred who wants to focus on a dual aspect of growth and enjoyment of life, then marrying without getting to nurture kids is fine. But the aspect of ' a woman adding to your income ' seems to be selfish. If the woman is of the same mindset of dual benefits then it's fine. But generally people prefer having a family because in the long run you will need to have somebody to take care for and who will take care of you, the ones for whom you are going to Leave your possessions behind.

Agree - FIRE is a difficult for the average person. Another takeaway is that kids are expensive - lots of people don't understand that being childfree is a great option to live a stressfree life. Social conditioning has made them feel that kids are compulsory and needed for a normal life - but aaj ke zamane mein nothing is normal. Add to that , the employment threats due to automation , AI and the way government is increasing taxes on salaried class - Future seems gloomy!

I have seen many early retirement including my own elder brother who was a Wall Street investment banker. I also see professionals who are struggling to keep up with job and lifestyle. Social interaction and working on a social cause in your country is much more rewarding than a job. There are many avenues to early beyond a job nowadays. Sometimes passive and sometimes as a hobby. Early retirement doesn't mean you don't earn or work after quitting a 9-6 job. It is a different way to earn money which may not be conventional middle class type.

Indians who are in service ,never think for early retirement because they know two facts-1.salary received in last 5 years ie during 55-to 60 years of age and has more than what received in previous 30years ie 25-55years of age 2.expenses during 25-55years has more and saving less whereas during 55-60 years expenses too less and saving huge. About 95% Indians do not earn and save more than sufficient corpus to become FINANCIALY INDEPENDENT before 55years of age. However,at the age of 60 years they may accumulate such amount to become FINANCIAL INDEPENDENT. So, no question of early retirement for persons who are passing through the age of 50 years in 2024, but the persons who has just joined and will attain the age 50 years in2075 ,may think and plan for early retirement.

If you love your present work you should continue working in a slower pace with the goal of leaving legacy rather than with the goal as more money.

We live in Europe and following self sustainable 30% life, growing veggies etc. we decided not to have kids so all time is for parents and for us. 5 years before the start of Reitrement make sure that the majority of your savings are not in any risky stock market investments. Many people have lost their retirement savings by keeping the majority of their savings in stock market investments. Rather take the money out of the stock market and place it in safe bank FD's. This also applies 2 years before your children's higher education or marriage commences. So plan well and do not keep money in risky investments a minimum of 2 years before you may need the money.

It would help an individual to better align his goals and dreams and also help them complete relief from the pertinent job stress for some time.
