Reality of Renting in Ireland | Are students being priced out of the market?

With only 800 places to rent in Ireland and most unaffordable for the average renter, how have things gotten so bad and what can be done?
We’ll be discussing this topic with 21 year old college student Mairead Maguire, who only has accommodation sorted for the next two months and then doesn’t know after that, all while working two jobs throughout the summer to make ends meet.
She’ll be joined by Dr Rory Hearne, Assistant Professor in Social Policy in Maynooth University who can provide us with an insight into Ireland’s rental sector and the impact holiday rentals are having.
The latest news, lifestyle features, human interest and consumer affairs stories presented by the Ireland AM team.
Monday-Friday from 7.00am to 10.00am & weekends from 9.00am to 12:00pm on Virgin Media One.

All the government intervention to tackle the accommodation crisis only made it worse. Basic giving/lending more money to people only make prices go up.

The government anti landlord legislations has lead to drastic reduction of rental stocks exodus of landlords. Rather than helping tenants it's had the opposite effect!

2 years ago I was attacked on line when I predicted the chaos that would ensue when government regulation drove out the one-off landlords and replaced them with REITS and agents with control over 100's, if not 1000's of units and the expertise and power to enforce regulations to the letter without any ability by the average tenant to fight back. Large scale REITS can afford to field a small number of non paying tenants or rule breakers who they will eventually evict. One -off landlords cannot afford to do this and usually lose €1000's when they have to. There is even a case where REIT's are holding units vacant to keep prices high, a totally ridiculous situation.

Supply and demand. Next to no accomadation built for 15 years. Objections to planning permission allowable from people who live the other side of the country from planning application. The population rising by 1000 plus a week,a year after year. Some how the politicians have allowed the state to become responsible, for housing anyone who comes here. Building even if the money is found is expensive, 3 to 4 year delay, assuming labour can be found without getting more outside help, who will have to be found a place to live meantime. It seems to be impossible problem.

It isn't only in the cities that rent is crazy. Down here in Dingle there's not so much as a dog kennel for rent. Unless it's airbnb or holiday let. Almost big city prices too.
