Description: The death of a first-year student from Jadavpur University (JU), allegedly subjected to extreme ragging by seniors in the main university hostel, has brought to the forefront the problem of ragging again. Despite being banned, ragging continues to persist across numerous colleges in India. Why is that? In this video, we discuss this issue while also touching upon the origins and psychology behind why seniors rag juniors and what are the consequences of this practice.

If you're a junior and bigger in size than the seniors, you can beat the shit out of them. That's the exact thing we did when we were getting ragged in our first week in the college.

I was ragged during my engineering. I was slapped from behind by the seniors in our classroom while everyone was watching and I was studying during break. They hit me because they wanted to rag me and I wasn't giving in. I was so enraged that I threw the bench. I swear I would have killed someone in that group, but I stopped myself because it was not worth it. They never messed with me after that. I never ragged my juniors as I know how it feels. I wish I'd have called the cops sometimes. But things were different back then, I was from a poor family. Atleast, people will change now. This was 12 years ago. Hyderabad, Telangana.

Being a first yr student from a government medical College...i can confirm that more than 95% of the students entering medical field face ragging...i entered my clg after qualifying neet exam and my parents were so proud of me then ...but it was the first time living away from home ...i was the youngest of my batch and had cleared the exam without any drop ...i used to feel homesick and then came the burden of learning the "funda" made by the seniors ...after my parents left me the first day ...i came back inside my room weeping and was soon instructed by a senior ki "funda m rehna seekhle ab " ...acc to them ...we had to bow down our head , wish them calling ma'am and sir , wear salwar kurta and plate our hairs after oiling them ...and remain 24*7 this way ....once i went to the washroom midnight with open hair and i was scolded by them...that was all still fine ...but they made us write their copies ...do their personal work and would also shout on us ...boys were beaten up and girls were asked to walk all the way from hostel to clg without even a umbrella over our head in scorching heat and sunlight of mid may and june ...and no one went to complain bcoz ultimately they say ki seniors se bna kr rkho ...yh baad m pdhaenge humein ...and this happens in every medical clg ..no one complains of anything.... ik it's not much what happened to me ...but it's bcoz i left hostel afterwards and shifted to a pg outside within few months ...god knows what all still is happening with my batchmates

Our current political system selling us the pipe dream of India becoming USA / China in the coming decades, but the system fails to explain how. As you all now India can't become manufacturing super-power beating China. (As, in India democracy instituted earlier than capitalism, unlike the west/ China, so the lackluster labour laws favourable for capitalists now can't be passed as a lot of trade unionism present in India due to democracy). In service sector also, India can't become industry leader, as India missed the semi- conductor bus. (That's why ChatGPT like innovation can't take place in India, even in China. As the value system of oriental societies is very different from Occidental one that promotes innovation by embracing failure) in Asia, every admission is happen through cut - throat competition & after cracking it the burn-out effect kicks in, which make people to look for cosy & comfortable job rather than going to the route of entrepreneurship. (Remember that, till now, there is no indian product is used in everyday life of westerners & it's 2023 & don't fall for the fake narrative that UPI would dominate the world, just think of USA, the country which houses NASA, military industrial complex, leads in complex technologies like aircraft, jet engine etc can't make UPI ?) Our political system is propagating a myth that in next 5-10 yrs, Indian economy will experience phenomenon like of China in 1980s. But the rise of China is a very unique phenomenon like rise of USA. A lot of factor have to converge to make it happen. ( Like currency manipulation done by China ,but now not possible for others ) As for that to happen, especially in Asia, (governance effective authoritarianism) is the way to go. Eg: China, Singapore, Dubai, Japan (military based) etc. But in India, it would never gonna happen. BJP will keep on winning in Lok- Sabha election, but replicating the success at state level will become increasingly difficult. As you can see, BJP still couldn't penetrate in South India even after long 10 yrs. Is the people of south India not pro- development, patriot enough to choose BJP? Can you give an example of a country where Religion dominates the centre of politics, but achieved economic success. Summerising, my point of view, if you come from middle-class / upper-class & want to do job, please move abroad. Don't look for opportunities in India. Mumbai, Bangalore still lacks basic infra, spectacular view of modernism etc. Yes, India would experience spectacular growth, but it would be always urban- centric, unequal and finally everywhere collapse of infra in cities will be witnessed due to population pressure & eventual demise of quality of life in emerging cities. (As We don't have Hukou system of China, reason behind non-existence of slums in Chinese cities). The devaluing rupee again would add to the misery, even to escape from India would be difficult as foreign trips / migration would cost heavily on your pocket. Indian visa ranks very poorly, ask anyone the hassles one has to face when having the Indian visa. (Recently, Mukesh Ambani could be seen delivering his grandson in US,as they follow "Jus Suli", i.e Birth-based citizenship) Have you guys seen recent crowd in the meet-up of BiggBoss winner Elvish Yadav? How unemployment deeply affecting even the economy of rich states like Haryana can be gauged. If Haryana is doing so good then why most of the students of kurukshetra University leaving India ?? I can go on, but stopping here. The central govt, BJP is doing amazingly good, but still it has problems. I have my reservation wrt rich states like Haryana also, where the state CM attends meet-up arranged by a youtuber. So, in coming decades, if you want to do job then migrate & if you want to do business, then India, as here you can bend rules easily to outcompete others. (If someone is very hopeful of our start- up eco-system, then please do your R&D deeply). What's your opinion in India's future ?

Even I was ragged in my 2nd year. I got saved in 1st year as it was College was closed due to Covid. The seniors humiliated me, stripped me naked except underwear, and paraded me across the whole hostel. When I complained this to my Principal, he instead scolded me and told me to respect the seniors. The seniors are so cruel that they just told my classmates to stay away from me and I was humiliated by seniors in every lab class. It ruined my mental health. One thing I can confirm that Charles Darwin was right. We evolved from Chimpanzees. As my seniors still showed these ape like traits. Human are just evolved apes. Now thanks to SAT I will be pursuing my BTech from a US University. This why brain drain happens in my country.

i am in class 11 and today i got bullied and slapped on my face while being called chashmish or oii chashme ( cause i wear glasses) , because of that slap my glasses fell on the ground and my lens broke and guess what my school did against that kid . Nothing . absolutely nothing . Now i am scared to even go to school cause now that he know that i told the teachers about it the person who bullied me along with his friends might target me and beat me up in the washroom ( they have a record of having a 5 v 1 with a boy and almost beating him up ) . Today i also realised that i have no true friends cause while this was happening most of my friends were there and none of them wanted to come with me to the staffroom to complain , none of them stood up for me in front of that boy or screw it even ask me if i was ok later on during the day which felt worse than the slap itself .

I recently started college as a first year vet student. On the orientation day we were told to respect seniors and abide by whatever they say. Later at night we were told to assemble in the common room of our hostel and were told about supposed mandatory rules, addressing seniors as sir/mam, greeting them individually whenever we encounter them, follow a school kid like dress code, not look them in the eye, to not say anything unless they ask you to, etc. Mind you, these were our immediate seniors, means they become seniors literally that day itself and it hasn't been long since they themselves went through it. In addition we are asked to assemble every night and for an hour or two they basically humiliate us so as to teach us "manners". The college is well aware of it and it even seems as if they promote such atrocities. There is an anti ragging committee but complaining to them is like talking to a wall and by doing so you risk becoming a target. It's infuriating to see how ragging culture is prevailing in our country.

Me and my batchmates had been ragged very brutally during our college days. The seniors got us undressed, abused us verbally, and physically. Once, they asked 4 specific people to come to a ground full of grass around 11 pm and asked them to hold the four corners of a mosquito net because the senior wanted to sleep on the ground. One of those folks also got dengue and suffered in the hospital for 2 weeks. People were asked to call the senior 'sir' or 'ma'am', and were said "90 maaro", which was bowing down to a senior. I have seen a senior spitting and urinating on one of my batchmates also. It is very humiliating and unacceptable. Watching this video made me almost cry. We were asked to talk 5 sentences on our mother or sister, and then seniors asked us to replace selected words from those sentences with private parts to make those sentences sexually explicit and unspeakable. There were many students including myself, who thought its better to end our lives than to live like this, with sheer tears in our eyes. On the other side, it was very surprising to see how the people who actually did get ragged started to rag juniors when they became seniors themselves. I am so broken until this day, even though it's been almost 3.5 years since I graduated. It's like a permanent damage in my head.

And only in your final years you realise that their is NO significant role of seniors in academics of yours, boycotting is forgotten after some period and no-one even remembers that you were blacklisted from co-curricular activities. If any fresher even accuses a senior of ragging, very strict action is likely to be taken by the Disciplinary Committee and the senior may even be expelled from college if proven guilty. The members of the Disciplinary Committee even "raid" hostel rooms regularly in the first month of freshers entering college, during which any junior-senior interaction is strictly prohibited. As a result of this proactiveness, neither me nor any of my friends have been ragged in the first year, completely eliminating any form of raging from IITD.

I was a victim of ragging in my graduation. What is so unfortunate that i was ragged by my own batch mate of the same graduation session at the hostel. It so happened that i joined the college in the mid session. I was new to that college and was staying in a hostel outside home for the first time. I was abused verbally, physically and emotionally by a student who belonged to my batch of graduation. This went on for weeks. I left the hostel when i could not bear it. I went home and never wanted to come back. My parents perhaps could not understand the severity of trauma i was going through. I don't blame them. Perhaps they thought that ragging is part of growing up and helps children become mature, confident and strong. I lost 5 months of my studies at the college. Those days there were no internet or on line classes. I lagged behind in all subjects and could never catch up with others. My 10th and 12th grades were over 98%. My graduation i scored just 51%. The lowest ever. I lost my confidence which never came back. I wanted to become a civil servant. I ended up as a clerk in a private company. Those 15 days changed the entire course of my life. I still stammer when i speak. I have fear of going on to the stage. I could not get promotions because of my fearful and submissive attitude. I can forget everything but I WILL NOT FORGIVE that hostel mate ever.

But we should protest against any kind of ragging, because ragging itself is wrong! And guys Swapnadeep's case was not just about ragging, he was sexually harassed by his seniors before his naked body fell from the third floor (it still remains a mystery whether he jumped by himself or someone pushed him). I told my father about it, he slapped me twice (he never hit me before or after that day) and said only one thing, how could you let this happen to you and with people who you call friends? We didn't raise you to be a coward. The next day I slapped that guy twice on both his cheeks when he was eating lunch with his peers. That sent a strong message across the students and everyone told me that they would never dare to do such thing bcz they feared confrontation later.. Later that day my father strictly told me, not to feel proud about what I did and it was morally not the correct thing to do but the right thing to send a message. He told me that my slap would stick with that guy for his entire life rather than if a teacher hit him. My father also expressed his college days when he was ragged and that day he promised himself that he would never let his child to be a part of it or simple accept it.. Miss you dad ✊🏻

The fact is that most ragging at colleges almost always is overtly sexual in nature. Somewhere the cause for this has to be the suppressed sexual urges of an average Indian teenager, where boys and girls are almost never allowed to even speak to each other in childhood, let alone have healthy friendships.

I was very shy and soft-spoken in my first year, but seniors forced me to abuse and recite their slogans in loud voices. That time I also felt that the intention of my seniors is good, and they want me to prepare myself for the harshness of the real world. I faced one of the embarrassing and worst "Ragging" in 1994 in Medical school in India and ran away from the hostel and never returned throughout my medical college times. After 30 years today morning, I am thinking about the same issue, Ragging in America Vs India - as I just returned from dropping my elder one in College here in America (Settled in America Now). Contrary to my college memories, what I saw yesterday at college here is totally different - many seniors came and worked as volunteers to shift the luggage and helped us move in. Humiliation or making fun of others exists in every culture - but how we propagate and how we adapt - is more important - I believe coming generations in India deal with this issue better and respect juniors. There are so many ways to know your juniors and make them friends - not just ragging. Thanks to see such a wonderful analysis on this topic from you, just subscribed to you lol (I do not follow much of Indian KZread). I too have a KZread channel and currently doing episodes on differences in the education system here and there but sure I will address this topic of Ragging Vs Hazing in my own way for my Telugu Audience.

My College has an anti-ragging cell, but senior-junior interactions are very common in the first month of joining the college. A student has to give an introduction 6 - 7 times a day. This goes on for 2 weeks. Sometimes seniors force students to do something in front of the whole class. It might go well for some people, but most students think of it as mental harassment.

When I was preparing for jee (in 2020), it always came to my mind why we need to do this? If cracking the most prestigious exam means facing the humiliation and torture (ragging) then why we should be preparing for such exams. I had this fear because my elder brother has faced these incidents who was in ISM Dhanbad and by watching movies and other sources too. Currently I'm in IIT Delhi and in my 4th year and I haven't faced ragging yet (till date). Yes we don't have much interaction with seniors (except from the ones who are in clubs at senior positions), but I think it's better than the fear which I have expected in the name of ragging in the first year.

Being from one of the NITs who passed in 2009 I can vouch for all that has been said here. The way it works is that they split the new batch in groups for e.g. I was in NESA group which means North Eastern Student Association. There was of course discrimination as in north east we have many states and Assam has highest number of seats. The Assamese seniors would have their way and racially abuse the others for the way they looked and talked. Of course not all of them were bad but I just wanted to say this is a stupid tradition. There was all sort of humiliation but one thing I can quantify is that our tight slap score at the end of year was 600+. That meant 600 tight slaps. One of us still had issues with hearing the last time I met with him. When us juniors went to 2nd year and year after that, very few of us felt like talking to those seniors. There was no help whatsoever from those seniors at any stage of my career and I have still succeeded by the general definition of success. Basically my point is learn from our mistakes and speak up if this is happening to you.

I'm studying in a medical college in Mangalore. Specifically in my college, any form of ragging is considered solid base for rusticating a student. Maybe that is why we never had instances of ragging. But when I became college senior, many juniors would ask why do you not rag us.. These kids have a pre-made idea in their heads about ragging and actually expects seniors to rag them and how cool will it be to be a part of such thing. Yes we do tell them to call final year students as Sir/ma'am but we've never seen any senior or as seniors ourselves have never done so much as to scold juniors for not doing it. I believe movies and series are the main cause for this glorification.

And they on the spot, in the middle of the ground, asked(in a very authoritative way) to give introduction. As soon as heard it, i left the pack silently. And the consequences were that, I was the only student in 1st year who was left alone and had not friends despite having good room mates. Due to which i stopped going for classes. And this resulted me not allowed to give exams and reported failed for the first time in my life. I left the college in the first 6 months. I joined another government college but didn't go to classes 97% of the time because I had showed them my doctor's prescription that I'm not well in terms of health both mentally and physically. Sad state of education system. My parents have asked me to do masters but I denied it.

I had seen "mild ragging" in one of the prestigious institute in India, which had "sir-madam, look at 3rd-button system, etc" which might not sound like a big thing to many. But it's not just about the severity but it's the cost of self-respect to satisfy someone else's ego. Which was one of the major reasons why I left India altogether.

Movies affect negatively but the movie table no. 21 that i saw at age 13,14 made me aware, I still remember the moment that movie revealed that all that revenge plot was because of ragging done by the characters, it made me aware which helped me to prevent my classmates from harassing juniors which was ragging. And the pattern was very simple. A professor slut shamed few of our classmates for cloth choices and then they went on a 'discipling' spree on juniors. I was shocked to see all this being done by my classmates whom I considered as good and sensitive people. I confronted them at the very same moment and all of them made me shut up, anyways the juniors forwarded a formal complaint, which worked as the leash on my classmates since then. The thing is that it is so normalised that people don't understand that their slight jokes and actions can have deep psychological impacts on the victims.

I am from VIT Chennai and here you have guards everywhere, cctv everywhere. You rag you get expelled and you can not then join any other college ( ig as per the ugc ). So yeah. We have those seniors juniors interaction events but they are pretty welcoming and obviously public so it's in the eye of guards and all.

Just like IIT Delhi, many colleges in Pune had extremely strict policies against ragging. When I started 1st year engg, I never witnessed any ragging. Our professors told us report anything if any ragging incident is witnessed in or out of the college. When we went to second year, the professors had told us to not even ask for names of freshers/1st year student because in case of a complaint, the senior would be suspended from the college right away and then the investigation would take place. So yeah, that was my experience.

An alumni of DU here. As a reserved category student with minimum knowledge of English I expected to get bullied mercilessly in my first year. So, I was at this wedding in a foreign country, hanging out with a bunch of people from different places. And you know what? I thought people didn't really know much about India except for maybe our diversity, culture, geography, and all that. But then someone mentioned the whole "Indians and alcohol" and "beating wives" thing, and honestly, I was pretty taken aback by that stereotype. It's crazy how perceptions can be so off sometimes!

I think, i have faced enough bullying in my high school then what i will face in my future college. I was so traumatized at that time, I still got goosebumps thinking about those times. I used to cry, keeping all things with me, thinking ppl will laugh at me if ill share what is happening w me, i still remember how badly i didn't want the teacher to leave the class before the period got ended I was so terrified with my bullies. I didn't want to face them during my lunch break also. Every time in the school i kept thinking about when school will get over and when I'll be home. I only carry bad memories of my high school no fun or enjoyment with friends and all stuff that other people do. I was totally unlucky because when these things were happening to me i did not have any single friends with whom I could share my things and why I'm not feeling good in school. There were 1 or 2 boys with me. I was friends with them for a while but with time they started getting jealous of me due to my good reputation in front of teachers and good scores in academics. They also started making fun of me and bullying me with other ones. This thing really broke me from inside. I remember those days when i was continuously thinking what i have done wrong with em and why they are treating me like this. A lot times I even changed my path coming back to home cause when they get me anywhere they start commenting on me and calling my name with different absurd names they have given to me, after coming back to home from school i used to cry a lot in my room. This mental trauma of mine really affected my focus and concentration into studies also, but hopefully I got good marks in my boards. mostly ppl still think bullying/ragging is not not a big deal. It's normal but actually it is not. That's why I was hesitant to talk with any new person in my new school thinking what if they'll get comfortable with me and start all those things which happened with me in last school . My those tough time was in 2020-21 and now I'm in 12th standard in different school and here I got some real friends with whom I enjoy a lot. I really think my real school life started in the new school but I only got 2 years in which I year has passed and I had made a lot memories of it but I'm happy now with my this school life ☺️ totally saturated

During my batchelors (2019-2022) we were given 15 written rules to follow which includes wearing formal shirt and pants, wishing the seniors good morning evening etc. We were often asked to do their assignments and records. They even harrassed us physically sometimes. There were regular intro system where we can't go to sleep till 4 am and sit in the common room repeating the introduction 40 50 times. They harrass us mentally and slangs were very common. Once we were told to pose for different sex positions and one of our classmates was forced to wear a bra and dance. We can't even complain about that the seniors were powerful and they don't fear to go to jail as they have already gone several times. Although two of us filed complaints but later they put a lot of pressure that we have to revoke that. There was a time I was asked to bring meals for 13-14 seniors to their rooms and I went to the canteen exactly 14 times that day. We were often told to kneel down or roll over the corridor. And the day one complained about it the cases worsened and the ragging became really intolerable. During my exam times I come home to prepare because they harrass more during the exams. Not only seniors we've been ragged by their friends and their seniors who were the pass out students of college but visit the hostel regularly.
