Realistic Graphic Mods Suck

in this video I talk about realistic graphic mods, like the ones made for Minecraft, GTA V, and Fallout 4. I spent $5 on a minecraft resource pack for a bit.

I'm surprised this didn't MELT my RTX 3090 Graphics card capable of outputting Minecraft Shaders with a 1024x, 2048x, and 4096x resolution texture pack all at 4k. I also have a AMD Ryzen 9 5950x CPU for this Minecraft, GTA V, and Fallout 4 graphics video. Some of the settings I talk about in this video are EXTREME. You could definitely say the combo of the Seus PTGI Ray Tracing Shaders and the Realistic Textures 1024x pack were really Pushing Minecraft to Its Limits
When it comes to playing games on a computer, one of the things most brought up is that you can mod your game to be whatever you want. And honestly I can understand why, if minecraft had an hour counter I’d probably have over 6000 hours put into it collectively, I currently have 500 in GTA V, and the last I played fallout 4 I didn’t exactly, uh, pay for it, but if I had to estimate I put about 30 hours into it before I got bored. The common denominator here is that all of these games are extremely customizable, you look up Minecraft mods, GTA V mods, or Fallout 4 mods, and you can find countless lists on websites dedicated to hosting them.
So if you’re a bit burnt out with a game, one of the easiest things you can do to add something to your experience to make it feel “fresh” again is installing a mod that “enhances” the graphics. These mods can cover a vast amount of possibilities, from something as simple as upscaling the textures, to something as in depth as upheaving the entire lighting engine to add things never thought possible for the game.
Originally I was going to transition to talking about minecraft here first, because you’d think adding insane to it would be impossible, but I want to talk about Fallout 4 first and it’s my channel anyway. See the whole idea with the fallout series is that it’s meant to look like, it’s a world irradiated from the fallout of nuclear bombs detonated all across the earth, I wouldn’t imagine it would look pretty. My personal issue with fallout 4’s style is that, well, it looks like. Again I completely understand why it looks like this, I’m just not a fan. Adding a bit of green, improving the lighting, honestly this looks pretty good, in the way that my eyes actually enjoy looking at what’s on screen, instead, of you know, this.
And I feel like there is an argument to be made here about distorting the message set up by the developers of the game. You’re supposed to feel bad looking at the terrain of fallout, it’s a depressing wasteland caused by humanity’s greed and unwillingness to cooperate with each other. At the same time, this isn’t actually a real issue, whoever is dedicated enough to take the time out of their day needed to set up fallout 4 to be modded already understands the message portrayed in the game. They get it, they’ve obviously played the game already, there’s no harm done in running around a wasteland that isn’t an eyesore instead.
On the opposite end of the spectrum, GTA V is a game that’s meant to parody the extreme parts of american society, and as far as I know the the artstyle of the game has nothing to do with any sort of message, not that it even matters anyway. I’m sick of staring at these models, and these same streets, and the same cars. I swear I know my way around Los Santos better than I do my own town. Like I can reasonably navigate to the airport from any place on the map. It’s been 8 years since this game came out, if people want to add some insane texture reshade rtx whatever it’s called pack to the game, why should I care. Honestly most of these seem pretty sick, my biggest issue is that most of these think streets that are wet as look really good. Like it’s unreasonably wet and shiny all of the time.
The trade off here, is that I get to drive around Los Santos in an actual lamborghini that has raytraced shadows and reflections. I can stare at roads that have 4k textures and look at a skybox that, uhh, looks like a sky idk man. I feel completely out of my depth installing these mods. I’ve done it once, but it was kinda broke and didn’t work correctly, and my caveman brain could never figure out why. Honestly I assume it was just because of a lack of experience.

They don't, tank that hard, actually. In the case of Skyrim there really is a pretty smooth transition from "vanilla" to "PC exploding", you just need to know what your machine can handle and what really causes the drops. Nearly everyone can grab *some* higher resolution textures, a weather mod if you want that, DynDoLOD most importantly to fix Skyrim's incredibly ugly pop-in problems (you can even make distant trees 3D rather than 2d sprites, and it isn't even *that* hard on your PC), literally everyone can install Static Mesh Improvement mod to make small objects have less than, like, two polygons, everyone can use Improved Closefaced Helmets so eyeholes are actually eyeholes and not just black textures. Hell, Cathedral Landscapes is a grass mod that seriously doesn't tank performance at all and includes land textures so everything still matches up and looks professional, it's great. You've got three or four options for fixing the lighting ranging from more / re-positioned light sources to just messing with in-engine light values so dungeons aren't awkwardly bright, and the ones that really have a performance hit are mods like ELFX. The only real performance killers at this point are general foliage mods (but again not always, depends on how they're going about it) and obviously ENBs which are more of a "use it if you have the overhead" thing.

Like adding extra details, visual effects, higher resolution textures, whatever, but only if it keeps within the boundaries of a game's art style and image. Shader packs are a good example, sure it may look a lot different, but it's still minecraft in its pixely, blocky form, just with pretty lighting. I like it. You won't catch me playing with that """realistic""" texture pack though.

My beef with "realistic" shaders and mods is that it seems the almost-consensus of people who make these things is that "contrast = realistic": every shadow has to be dark as fuck, every light has to be extremely defined, you absolutely NEED to have shadows everywhere for no reason and every single mildly reflective surface has to become a mirror after modded. It's like people have never seen actual daylight, where you can - God forbid - actually see things in the shadows because the world itself is very illuminated and shadows aren't as contrasted as the "muh realism" crowd needs it to be. Like, it's okay to not have absolute unbreakable duality; that's just how real life lighting works.

Most modded youtube videos I see are over the top, pc breaking, high-maintenance-required pedestals that can't be reached by the average pc user. "500+ mods", "300+mods", all basically flexing how beautiful their game is and how experienced they are at mods... But this guy seems very down to earth. Just do to the fact that he couldn't download a visual enhancement mod (just like I have failed to do in the past) And again, love for mods that rivals mine, Makes him seem somewhat relatable and makes me want to watch him more.

Great video, thought I'd make a little note though "impressive considering minecraft was made in Java and can effectively only run on a single core" isn't quite accurate because shaders run on the GPU, so how many CPU cores minecraft is using isn't relevant for the graphics. It's also worth mentioning that most games run most of their work on a single core simply because not every process and task can be ran in parallel, and Minecraft doesn't exactly use the most advanced AI or similar tasks that can take advantage of more cores. Java itself can run very efficiently, Minecraft itself uses a wrapper to utilise OpenGL, but a Java game could just as easily use a modern graphics api like Vulkan. It's just that Minecraft itself was originally designed in a poorly optimised way, and so much of the way the game behaves relies on that system, which is why the "Minecraft for Windows" port and mobile version of minecraft have so many differences in things like redstone.

But you're right in that the CPU has to make a call to tell the GPU to run the shader however, so if it's taking it's sweet time doing something else then the shader will have far less time to execute, or depending on engine, be called less thus equating to less frames. That being said, a faster GPU can counter that by simply needing less time to execute the shader, hence my original point.

@@bananycus379 oh yeah I entirely believe that CPU bottlenecks. didnt know about that new option, neat. Still 'simulation distance' can only reduce the CPU load but not eliminate it, otherwise the blocks wouldn't render at all. But I can totally believe Mojang has done something so stupid that shaders exponentally bottleneck the CPU for some reason (even though they're literally designed to reduce CPU load), this shouldn't be the case at all but after some scanning over Minecraft's bug reports page, they seem to be having a lot of problems implementing their OpenGL renderer properly. Until 1.18 they completely forgot to tell OpenGL to render in 3d space mode and left it in a generic mode typically used for cryptomining!

GTA models look pretty bad now, just wish they could at least update it in a way so they don’t look so ugly, fallout does look good with some bits of greens there and there. All fallout need is to try and make it a post nuclear war look but in a way make it seem like there’s a chance at life here. Don’t want to say fallout 76 did it perfectly but it had something in the way. And Minecraft, well shaders are beautiful, just don’t want my cpu and gpu having a stroke after apply and running the shader. I like a stable frame for once. That’s why mods exist, to change the experience of a game, every game will be modded by a community regardless. Funke also does a good job about modding in his video too. How mods are treated in a way by the creators. Just know that Nintendo hates mods. The end

The only modifications I like to make to Minecraft preserve the base textures. I add shaders so it looks pretty, but I try to set the water to stay vanilla like and I don’t really go overboard with all the realistic lighting features, I just want directional shadows, emissive glowing textures and vibrant lights, plus some reflective surfaces. Most recently I’ve used complementary shaders with iris/sodium, which is super easy to set up, and comes with some built in PBR materials settings so that I don’t need to download other packs to play with reflective metals and slightly bumpier surfaces. I also use a feature that slightly roughs up the texture of blocks with basically some noise based on the texture itself, but it’s very subtle and I like it. I do all this so I can get “Minecraft, but with prettier lighting” in a way I can enjoy playing in survival, not “Minecraft, but every graphics feature ever imagined has been pumped into it and it’s using hyper-realistic lighting and textures”, because frankly, that’s ugly. I just want some bumpier stone and grass, shiny metals and water, and some shadows. Something that preserves the visual style of Minecraft, something that could be Minecraft vanilla if mojang upgraded the lighting a tiny bit. Nothing further. (The only real gameplay changing option I like is glowing ores, but I feel like that should be a vanilla feature for a few reasons. 1. It doesn’t include coal, and coal is still super essential for torches lighting up the deeper caves; 2. It makes the caves much prettier, with spots of metal in the distance; 3. It gives players a bit more of a goal to focus on when they see a massive cave and prevents them from missing valuable deposits because of a lack or torches or direction while exploring. It shifts cave exploration into being a little more purposeful and driven, kind of like terraria. Instead of “wander aimlessly until you find what you’re looking for” it turns into “check if this area has what you’re looking for and if it does figure out how to get to it”. But that’s the only shader feature that I like that really changes gameplay outside of the vanilla experience.) Edit: I want to add I don’t have a super high-end PC, it’s nice but not crazy, and this all runs fine with sodium/iris
