Realism / What We Can Learn From Cinematographer Roger Deakins
A few months ago I heard cinematographer Roger Deakins offering his perspective on realism in image-making, and the balance between authenticity and interpretation. His words inspired me to create this video, and share what I believe is the central message we should learn and apply to our work.
Audio narration by Roger Deakins from Episode 9 of the Team Deakins Podcast.

That’s exactly what I think!!!
One of the most important videos about photography and art in general available on youtube. Thanks.
This is amazing. Thanks for sharing it.
Hi, As a film student and aspiring cinematographer, I wanted to thank you because you said what I needed to hear. I've been listening to a variety of podcasts about cinematography and yes, I should let myself express my vision. Great video, amazing tip, thank you Todd!

Great Todd. Thank you very much for your help inspiring.

Great points. So much of what we precieve comes from thought and memory. Even our fears and limitations have words and pictures, as well as images. Just opening our imagination to include everything will fill the mill with grist. There is an unlimited pallet within everyone's experience, and when we collaborate we reinforce it. Thanks for sharing.
Love this!! I am always so hung up on trying to get the photo to look exactly like in real life, so this is very inspiring.
Yes, very enjoyable subject. Thank you for sharing your thoughts.

This is just soo true. I am very new to this field. People like you are the reason people like me choose to carry on instead of quit. THANK YOU SOO MUCH :)
This is beautiful and the philosophy behind it is actually really deep that we all need to look inward to reflect outward; thanks for making this : )

Very touching... Good work.
Just perfect! And so beautiful…. The way good cinema is, in my opinion. Thank you very much, Todd!

Please, what is the name of the first music ?
Great video! More like this. Hope you’ll grow on KZread - if that’s what you want :)
Deakins is a master, but I think that having huge budgets and access to technology, and no limitations when it comes to lights, I think that any decent talented DP would achieve the same

Plenty of big budget movies that look like garbage so I don’t think your argument holds much water
