Check out what a 2015 Lumia 950 XL can do against a P40 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro 😁 unbelieveable... I still have that phone, it's slim camera only now, thanks to Microsoft, but takes amazing photos. I'm not sure P40 Pro could be so much better than my P30 Pro. Maybe next gen 2021 Huawei phone could be a quantum leap. Anyway I don't change phones every year, so... it's fine.

Great video! A wonderful illustration of the photographic capabilities of the modern phones, but also an illustration of the fact that a true photographer can create a masterpiece with a pinhole camera. There is a hidden gem in the huawei camera app. One that I am sure you would be blown away by. Silky water filter, its essentially a long exposure without nd filters while keeping the exposure from blowing up. Give it a try, and if you like it - share with us, I'd love to see what you can do with it.

Lot of haters on here for the Huawei. I have the P30 and the main benefit is that it is always on me, so I always have a camera. I do struggle with some of the modes, but the AI is amazing. OOH I have a Fuji XT-2 and an Intrepid 4x5 both of which I used today. The P30 also acts like viewfinder, exposure meter, DOF calculator, Shoot planner, route planner too for my other cameras. So it is something of a photographic Swiss Army knife.

Pretty much agree with most of what you say. Previous user of P20P, M20P and nowadays P30P. What I do not agree with is obsolence of RAW. Albeit 50MPix is not really 50MPix of dataworth - it is a QBayer sensor so one has to be very carefull when processing the DNG (artifacts). For most situations 12MBit file have plenty of detail, however for high demands (I am retired PRO photog) you cannot beat the DNG just because of rendering (sometimes digi-look, sometimes watercoloring in smooth areas, sometimes oversharpening etc. Whatever HUA and the rest done so far, the rendering, smoothness of transitions between detail and out of focus areas and quality of Denoising (meant areas with details vs areas without details especially transitions) is just not there. And DNG (to an extent even 50MPix JPG) can eliminate this. Obviously you have to use as best as possible tools for managing this as there is no AI help. Nevertheless until going beyond 800ISO the quality of output (using Topaz AI Denoise and Topaz AI sharpen) is so good that my 20MPix mirrorless is having a hard time to beat it. This is not gonna happen with OOC JPG. Well being so demanding - you might say- use real camera - but no, I cannot take my Panny mirrorless everywhere unlike phone - precisely as you said. What holds me back with this camera is lack of Google services and lack of true macro as with P30P. Because 20MPix macros or closeups frome let´s say 10cms and using DNG are truly amazing. The same has to be said about 125mm lens when used in DNG mode - outstanding - no match for OOC JPG. But - although you have OIS here and there depending on mode you use - you do not have it in PRO mode (P30P) and that sucks. Is it different with P40P? You have something like EOIS but that takes time to take a shot and you can easily miss the moment. And that is another problem - as HUA cameras can take 6FPs with a buffer of around 100 pictures - and is something very important when you try shooting action. To cut the story - I am still tempted by this phone and had it Google Services I will probably switch immediately - until then P30P does as good for my needs and in autumn there will be M30P with new fluid lenses tech - so maybe wait is my best bet so far.

I am using the Huawei P30 Pro now for half a year. The image quality is also fantastic especially in low light situations. The funny thing is that I come to the same conclusion for the Pro Mode. After testing the Raw mode and comparing it to the jpeg, I thought I don't need the Pro Mode. Also the filter function - smooth water etc) produces good results. The phone doesn't replace my mirrorless but in fact it will replace my RX100.

I watched this video a few weeks ago before I bought my P40 Pro (which arrived a few days ago) and I wish I had paid more attention of your dismissal of the raw files around 8:00, and in particular, your attempt to get rid of the green tint around 8:14 where you wiggled the mouse pointer around the tint slider, which was already maxed out at the magenta side. I now understand that wiggle of frustration a little more. I feel that if this video wasn't promoted by Huawei then you would have mentioned that all the raw files have a green tint. The camera uses a RYYB sensor, instead of RGB and essentially has twice the amount of "green" pixels (captured as yellow), which (I assume) is the reason all the raw files have a massive green tint to them. I feel that you definitely glossed over the fact that the raw files are essentially unusable, although you did slightly kind of lean that way. I think it's a bit devious for Huawei to claim that the phone will shoot 50MP raw files, but they don't tell you that they are basically a gimmick. Maybe Lightroom, in the future, will put out a better profile for this phone, or maybe increase the range of their tint slider, or something, but at the moment raw files are useless. Still, the phone does shoot great jpegs, but I did feel a little bit hard done by when I opened all my lovely raw files in Lightroom only to find they were useless, and that nowhere in any of the reviews I watched was it mentioned. Reviewers generally just say "it shoots raw" but never bother to give any more info than that.

8:10 The sensor has a different color filter, which leads to much less detail than Bayer sensors. They need to rearrange ("remosaic") the pixels artificially in order to get the Bayer array. This also leads to a lot of artifacts. Fuji's X-trans has a similar issue (Lightroom and Adobe's dng converter rearrange X-trans pixels artificially as far as I know). In Huawei's pixel binning mode the pixels don't need to be rearranged.

If you can recommend any around 100GBP which could also house an attachment for a Huawei P40 Pro mobile (saves carrying around two tripods) Thanks and I wish you well. Be good if you could flach your ISA, aperture and other settings on your vids on your highlighted photos. Bye

In fact, phones these days are a whole lot more expensive than those far more superior used cameras waiting to be loved again. My first foray to dedicated camera was a used Nikon D300(US$ 180) and absolutely love it. Just recently got a used Fujifilm X100S for US$ 140 and I can't wait to give it a spin.

Tom, did you try processing the RAW file as usual and then downsizing to 12MP yourself to compare to the camera generated jpeg?

Huawei doesn't supply pixel binning raw files, so the raw files will have more read noise than the jpgs, no matter whether you downsample. Furthermore the dng files have rearranged the pixels artificially (which leads to artifacts and less detail) due to the different color filter array whereas pixel binning results in a traditional Bayer array.

I own a RealMe 5Pro, which has four back cameras including a 48MP one, with lots of additional options (macro, telephoto, wide etc). It produces very nice images during the day, but has a mediocre performance during low light. It is not a substitute for my DSLR, just an additional option whenever I don't have my camera with me or when I want to share an image fast I don't think that phones will ever take over professional cameras mainly because not everyone has the interest in photography and all the fine work that comes with it.

All the negative comments miss the point that the ‘AI’ and processing power in smartphones needs to be incorporated into cameras. Tony Northrup has made exactly the same observation. Serious photographers get very defensive when it comes to smartphone cameras but they have replaced cameras for the majority of people. Not to mention 4K video, how many KZread videos are shot on smartphones ?

Technology moves on, but not that much. Back in in 2012 i had (still have in a box somewhere) a Fuji X10 www.dpreview.com/reviews/fujifilm-x10 it used similar tech called EXR to create great images from a small pocket sized camera. I was really sorry that Fuji stopped developing the tech. I captured and printed some of my favourite memories with that camera and for me that's what photography is really about.

It's the same b.s. with photo scanners claiming to have 6.400 dpi or more - while in reality there's no more detail to be found beyond 1900-2000 dpi. But with interpolation they blow up the image and give inflated numbers.

  • @Crispy_Bee

@@BlackParade01 It does not matter as long as the actual level of detail is way below 50mpx. It might as well have a 5000000 MP sensor or a 5 gagillion MP sensor. As long as the images look mushy and have 0 detail it's just a blown up inflated number without any merit.

The 50 megapixels aren’t true size megapixels like dslr megapixels, yes there’re 50 megapixels, but they’re crammed in microscopic photosites, which is how they get away with marketing bs to make you think that it takes photos like a 50 megapixel dslr

I'm sorry, but I don't think you understand the concept of pixels, or you're not getting your point across. There are no "true size megapixels". If you're referring to the size of the pixels that's fine. If you're referring to the bit depth of a pixel, that's fine. If you're referring to the overall noise a sensor produces, I get you. But don't treat "megapixel" as a measure of quality. Because it isn't and it never has been. It has always been a marketing term to trick you into buying the new and fancy model. And people should understand exactly what it means, to not be tricked into buying a shiny 50 megapixel phone thinking it will be as good as having a 12 megapixel APS-C or 35mm sensor. As always in life; size matters.

The best selling DSLR and mirrorless cameras are cheap APS-C cameras with a kit lens for something like 300-500€. I wouldn't be surprised if this phone can compete with them. It can't compete against expensive lenses and the versatility of system cameras. So the massage to the masses is, before you buy a Canon 2000d with one lens that remains always on the camera, you might be better off with this.

Literally DSLRs had the IR focusing beam but then mirrorless came along and that was no longer needed. It's old tech, but re used in something that needs it more than ever having lesser low light capabilities than a full fledged camera.

Great review during this lock down stuff I've taken a few shots in super markets using a smart phone which is far easier than using a dslr for candid shots, I'm always impressed with the quality and this is a Iphone 7, so pretty old tech now. I'll never replace my camera kit in favour of just a phone but for the instagram generation that P40 is an awesome tool.

Always a pleasure watching your videos Thomas! And while I do agree with you that we live in the future, I would like to point out a couple of things about those Huawei-specs: Pixel binning is nothing new in the camera industry. In fact, many full frame video shooters are very familiar with it, as it has typically been considered negative. It basically means that instead of capturing an entire say 26 MP image and then processing it on the fly to convert it to FHD video, or 2 MP, it skips pixels - hence "pixel binning" :p Now I don't know if Huawei actually means live processing, but it would be very odd indeed to try and market themselves with a tainted word. What this means is that they are probably not getting a 12 MP image with "larger pixels", and would probably have been better off just using a 12 MP sensor of the same size if that was their goal - which I would totally support. This also relates to an age old debate about more vs. larger pixels, that more or less ended when it came to light (heheh) that an image of say 50 MP converted properly down to a 25 MP image gave about the same results as that from a 25 MP sensor. It's still relevant for video however, where processing power is still a major hurdle. So I guess what I'm trying to say is that I actually am impressed with these images, but I feel as though Huawei tries to sell that quality to the general public with terms that they can understand. I think their real improvements are the rather large sensor of 1/1.28 inch which can actually handle 50 MP at f/1.8 without reaching the diffraction limit (I checked), advancements in tiny lens design, and most importantly, processing power and AI.
