Real World - Scuba: DSMB Training & Practice
In this video, I am teaching a diver how to deploy a DSMB. This video will show what’s involved in the GoDivePH DSMB deployment training for scuba divers and how to properly execute a safe and effective deployment.
Phase 1 is mastering the different steps leading to a successful deployment (and techniques within each step). Phase 2 (in a future video) is executing the deployment but this time while hovering in mid-water and in good trim.
In Phase 1, time and air permitting, after the DSMB is launched, we pull it back down and start the process all over again. This builds muscle memory through repetition. I teach repetition and while time consuming, repetition is essential in making the skills reflexive and intuitive as opposed to cognitive. This is particularly important when safety skills (such as DSMB deployment) are called for in challenging and time critical situations (emergencies, strong currents, rough oceans, etc).
To prevent currents from moving the student all over the place and slowing down the learning process, the student stays negative on the bottom in a prone position (not kneeling). Students learn faster when the learning process is progressive (one skill at a time) rather than doing everything all at once (deployment steps, buoyancy, trim, reverse kick, position hold).
In Phase 2, the student will do the same DSMB deployment but this time in Neutral Buoyancy (Hovering) while in good horizontal trim AND in a fixed position (not moving around).
If you dive in the Philippines (Anilao, Bauan, Puerto Galera, Subic), send me a message @GoDivePH on Facebook or KZread and I’m happy to help you work on your DSMB Deployment skills.

When your balls hit the reef - and they feel some sharp teeth - that’s a moray!

You forgot to mention that it's important to use your tank to clear out the coral first so you have a nice flat piece of the reef to lay on. Otherwise, the technique was perfect!

All skills should be taught from neutral buoyancy. It’s why so many divers trash reefs.

Prior to going to the ocean, All divers should train their skills or nuetral buoyancy in the swimming pool.

I'll just add to the already stated comments. TEACH BUOYANCY CONTEOL FIRST! It's not going to matter if he can shoot an smb if he has to do it on the bottom of the sea floor.

What a mess… painful to watch 🥴 Next time find a spot where you won’t smash the coral. Thanks
