I have to agree with Maher's final point on this. I look around the homosexual community and I see people of all types and kinks being proud of who they love, and what they love to do in the bedroom, and it's amazing. Yet heterosexuals seem rather sexually repressed by comparison, and I know a lot of it has to do with religion but I think there's a social stigma against straight men and women enjoying kinky sex, or enjoying multiple partners if they want. It's about time we let everybody be as sexual as they want to be and stop judging them for it.

+Kaleb Adams Agreed 100%. Sometimes Maher nails it....like here. When it comes to biting pithy satire, no one does it better. I'll paraphrase what Stephen Fry once put so well: _"Sex is fun, it's jolly, it's a great way to spend one's time. But, as a primary impulse, it can be dangerous. It's sort of like food in that sense. The only people who have a _*_problem_*_ with food are anorexics and the morbidly obese. Sex is similar. It breeds pathology in those who use guilt shame and repression to deny their natural human interests."_ He was saying all this in relation to the Catholic Church and their _"unique"_ approach to sexuality. Couldn't have said it better myself.

At the same time, there's utterly nothing wrong with people wanting to change their "natural mood," whatever that may be. I would think that Bill Maher, big-time advocate of the right to take any substance you care to take in order to do whatever you damn well please with your own consciousness, would be the first to recognize this.

Maher is making this unnecessarily contentious. Basically, it comes down to this: the motivation of any person to use any drug can certainly be debated (like anything else in life??) . . . but ultimately the choice (and responsibility) of any adult in doing so should be respected. Want to take the drug (?) No problem. Don't really have a good reason for doing so (?) No problem. Don't want to listen to reasons for or against doing so (?) No problem. Okay for others to propose reasons for or against doing so (?) No problem. SO WHAT'S THE PROBLEM (?)

Bill makes a very good point - there is way too much pressure for people to have sex and then too much vitriol for having a healthy sexual appetite. I am out and proud and even I agree about that there is a double standard of what is deemed healthy for sexual behaviour based on sexuality. Though Josh Duggar was, for lack of better words, an asshole, a lot of it did come from society and his upbringing - his parents condemned sex for pleasure and pressured him to only have intimacy if it was for procreation, because of religion, but being young in today's society has the consequence of wanting to have sex for pleasure, because it is perfectly natural to. He is still an asshole for abusing his sisters and cheating on his partner, no denying, but he shouldn't have been put in that position to begin with. To my mind, sex is a natural pleasure and it should be treated like all natural pleasures, like with eating, exercise and intimacy - it's perfectly natural to feel like wanting to do it and there should be no shame in not wanting to; just remember that when you do decide to enjoy life's natural pleasures, that you do it safely, with due consideration of yourself and others.

So is Maher really advocating freedom for adultery? Well, you already have the freedom to be adulterous, the law is not gonna ban you from doing it. If you wanna have sex with a lot of people, that's fine, do whatever the hell you want; but if you do it while you have a partner who did not consent to your actions, it would be utterly unfair to that partner. You also don't really have a right to complain if others think less of you for doing it, as long as they don't overly harass you or harm you, it's their opinion.

+First Name Chris Precisely. Both asexual people and people that are not interested in traditional relationships (polyamorous people, or people who just want a string of casual relationships) should be accepted as normal as well. It's stupid to expect that everyone is going to like the same thing. I actually think this would *protect* people that want a 'traditional' relationship with their partner - if people are encouraged to be open about what they want, you don't have as many lonely former wives of gay men who were basically conned into having their kids.

I liked the video but I do actually see a point to the drug. And that point would be married women who do love their husband and want the relationship to continue. But the relationship is under strain because she simply doesn’t want sex and he still does. This is not that rare. Having sex when she really doesn’t want to is very unpleasant and a difficult sacrifice to make, and him going without is also a difficult sacrifice that often results in divorce or severe distress over time. For those couples in that situation this pill might allow them to both feel happy and satisfied in their relationship which aside from the sexual issue was one they both deeply wanted to continue. Why is it O.K. to medicate a mood disorder but not a sexual one? As long as it is the woman who decides to go on the meds I see nothing wrong with it. As long as she is the one who chooses to enhance her libido who is being harmed? Sex drive like everything else is driven largely by our hormones and brain chemistry. If A woman feels her hormones are failing her how is that different than the chronically depressed or someone with anxiety disorder seeking treatment to improve their life and relationships.

  • @intrepidtomato

    @intrepidtomato

    8 жыл бұрын

+Frank Delgrosso Tend to agree, but people should consider other alternatives before they try a drug. That is, talk about whether the woman has really lost all (even theoretical) interest in sex or if there are circumstantial issues (stress, depression, lack of sleep) that make her disinterested. Are there medical issues, is she getting enough exercise, is there anything the man could do differently to get her in the mood - there is as much going on between the ears as between the legs when it comes to sex.

I don't understand the mockery about the pill. Sounds like it's for people who usually like sex but who are going through a low sex drive period due to, for example depression. The pill sounds like good way to keep their relationship healthy. It's not for people who initially don't like sex.

There's one problem with what Maher is saying: Marriage functions as an equalizer both between male and female and among the genders. It's like saying, "OK, everyone pick one person approximately as attractive as you, or else some people will get 100 people and some people will get zero." Party all you want is a great philosophy as long as you're one of the ones who gets invited to the party. It also compromises between what men tend to want more and what women tend to want more. Without that, you've got guys looking their next Tinder bang, women looking for commitment and guys seeing no incentive to give it to them, and ugly people who no one cares about. Not great for society as a whole.

+Virtuoso80 Interesting post, but you're circling around the bull's eye. Look into evo psych and sexual selection, you will find your bull's eye. Also look into full female sexuality. They are only looking for commitment for child rearing. Women also fail the the fidelity commitment as much as men. Also by reading between the lines it says you are aesthetically challenged. there is hope if you look into " Individual variability". Also look into DNA modification or more commonly known as plastic surgery. It is over utilized by already good looking women and under utilized by less attractive men. Yes I know money is a real issue here. but worth every penny if you can pull it off. Also look into the " the power of the subconscious mind" by josph murphy. Most of it is based on using it as cure all placebo effect. I think it can be re-utilized as a mental health tool. What I'm saying is broaden your horizons more before you give up. There is wiggle room in the absolutist game of fucking.

+Virtuoso80 What +writerconsidered said. And: it's still better for people to be open about what they want. I'd personally rather be alone than with a guy who wants something I can't provide and is frustrated about being stuck with me. Want a tall woman who is into swinging? Are you gay and looking for a beard? Great, we're not a match. Society should not attempt to bully people into marrying someone if it's not their thing. And I say that as someone who is about to get married.

It is a mood altering drug... and if you want her to do unspeakable things... all you have to do is get down there and get busy... and if she wants you to do that whole romantic ravage... then she needs to get down there and get busy... You don't need pills... you need effort on both sides of the bed, floor, couch, coffee table...etc...

Well, ok, it might be an overexaggeration, but still: Maybe she wouldn't want to sleep with a guy X before taking that pill, but after the pill she might want to. So unless she took the pill herself of her own free will, Thomas would be right. It could eventually be used like that.

That awkward moment when a Bill Maher bit meant to criticize religion also kind of unwittingly promotes rape. (In short: "Sexually repressed people should have to take a pill that makes them desire sex.") I wonder if the feminists will jump on this one or not; they must feel pretty conflicted themselves.

Unlike usual I am going to (partially) disagree with you here. If you have a woman who never has a desire to have sex, and it is ruining a marriage, then I see addyi as something good. Unless you see divorce, or a one sided bad marriage as a preference to adjusting someone's (theoretically bad) attitude.

It's nice that he addresses the bullshit of this pill, but he should've brought up that the shit hasn't even been demonstrated to work, that the company who developed it haven't done any research on its effectiveness beyond what the company they bought the patent from had done previously and that it was rushed to the market by political advocates.

I don't see the problem, if a woman's partner wants more sex than she does, she has three options; have more sex than she wants to, have only as much sex as she wants to and leave her partner pent up, or find a way to increase her sex-drive so that they get on the same level and can both have lots of fun together. Obviously no one should be feel pressured into taking that pill, but if someone actually wants to accommodate their partner better, or just wants to be a bit wilder and lustier in general, then that seems perfectly cool. Maybe she feels that her sex drive has dropped and misses it, because she wants to be more adventurous and passionate like she used to be, etc. Seems there are plenty of reasons why one could want that,

Is she not interested because she is not interested in the things he is doing, is she on medication / depressed / stressed out and overworked, or is she just borderline asexual and doesn't see it as a problem. But yeah, it probably can't hurt to try the pill as well, it could also act as a placebo.

Ah, Bill. I like him, but every once in a while he lets his repressed bigotry come out just a little, and it's not pretty. Really? Are we seriously going to pretend that every gender identity and sexuality is now not only accepted, but embraced in America? Do me a favor, open any online news article about Caitlyn Jenner and read the comments. Then tell me that with a straight face. I know Bill loves to make a point about religion, but could this be more of a lazy illustration? Now we're supposed to think heterosexuality is under attack! Come on.
