Real-Time In-Camera VFX for Next-Gen Filmmaking | Project Spotlight | Unreal Engine

Real-time technology is transforming the art of filmmaking, with next-generation virtual production tools coming to Unreal Engine. At SIGGRAPH, Epic Games partnered with Lux Machina, Magnopus, Profile Studios, Quixel, ARRI, and DP Matt Workman to demonstrate how LED walls can provide not only virtual environments but also lighting for real-world elements, so the entire scene can be captured in camera in a single pass.

The trick in Unity is just doing EVERYTHING in blender(parenting material naming mesh renaming etc...)

...if you're a cyclop. These things can only display one perspective at a time, like a normal TV screen (but much larger) - it's basically the "display follows perspective of camera trick" that started to be popular with makers back when hacking wiimotes to do the tracking-part was "a thing" - except with an insane crazy high budget for the actual TV display. It looks very cool on camera, but completely breaks apart in person: we human happen to have two eyes, and only one of the two can be easily receiving the correct perspective. And that's only for one viewer. As soon as there are two people in such a 'holodeck' you'd need four different perspectives to be displayed. The only way to achieve that is by using shutter glasses (you can't use polarized glasses easily from weird angles, must be constantly facing the screen)

After watching the Mandalorian I finally understand how awesome this tech is. Having a virtual set being rendered in real time in the background and also cast actual lighting for the scene makes such a huge difference compared to how cgi has been incorporated into films in the past. Everything feels so much more believable when the lighting, cast reflections and shadows blend in with the scenery.

its the little things that sell an effect, like the lighting and reflections on the bike in the close up, everything matches in terms of colours, reflections, depth of field. it will also cut down on production effect turnaround for a number of scenes that ordinarily might takes weeks to produce to this standard of reality. look at Oblivion and first man for excellent examples of LED or projection backgrounds being used, this is even more sophisticated, so i cant wait to see it used practically in a movie/s.

Justin Crediblename I would say it’s more than reasonable. But skip the contribution part. In my own opinion it’s about following the market. UE costed shitloads for ages. When Unity suddenly started to get market shares, introduced and asset store and the modern “big” indie market appeared then Unreal followed and a lower and lower price race with Unity begun. I think it’s great that there is many production proven engines out to be used almost free (or in “trial”) and then for a reasonable profit share. But make no mistake base core is financially and profit driven.

Hello guys from Epic, I would like to give an implementation tip to make Project Spotlight more realistic. I believe that a system of layers in real time to simulate the reaction of the ambient light in the actor would be ideal. For example: there are 3 layers, the first 1 is where there is the 3d scene with its own lighting as you already do; the second 2 would be the actor or objects on the scene; and the third 3 would be the lens effect of the camera when it captures an object in front of a point of light, or when moving. If you had this automatically to calculate around real objects it would be fantastic.
