That's because the southern accent is based on old Elizabethan English. It gets complicated, though. Here in NC there were 7 distinct accents ranging from a slow slurred western NC accent to the other extreme, English Brogue (sounds like a southerner with a sort of British accent) on the northeast coast of the state.

I've been in the South since 1978. My family moved from the Midwest when I was a boy. I recall having to learn to understand Southerners. The challenge of doing a Southern accent in a movie is that the actors have to make what they are saying understandable. Even after 40-some years in the South I make no claims to speaking well with a Southern accent and I study diction having once been a voice major and also now working as an audio engineer. The Southern vowels actually bear a striking resemblance to some used in some Scottish and Irish accents.

You should've listened to more people from True Blood. The first time I saw it, I was convinced Ryan Kwanten and Stephen Moyer were actually southern because of how good their accents were. When I found out they weren't and were from Australia and Britain respectively, I was pretty shocked. Jason, especially, sounds really legit like a hick, and not someone just trying to sound as southern as they can, leaning into cringe territory. Bill sounds like old South.

Our southern accent and a British accent are similar in physical mouth and tongue movement. Accents began to change when immigrants from other countries came. That’s why British actors usually do a good job. I just saw an interesting YT video on this very subject the other day.🫶🏼

I'm originally from West Texas, so I didn't grow up with much of a southern accent, but there's definitely a little bit of drawl. One example was when I heard someone talking about the tire store chain 'Big O Tires', I thought that they were saying "Big Ol' Tires". 😄 I do cringe when I hear really bad attempts at southern accents. In my experience, there isn't a 'one size fits all' accent, and actors should research the accents in the area their characters are supposed to be from, rather than just slapping on a Scarlet O'Hara and calling it a day. Anyway, one of my favorite movies is 'The Gift' with Cate Blanchett. I would love it if you would react to some of the accents in that one. ❤

The British Accent is rather new in history. The reason British actors can do a southern accent so well is that was their original accent. After The revolutionary war the upper class changed the American accent to the current British accent. They did not want to sound American at all. Than the lower class followed suite and uses the British accent. It really hurt the upper class and King George III felling's that they lost America.

I'm originally from Indiana but lived in Florida in my formative years, so I have a southern-ish accent. Got married and moved to Albuquerque. Did a lot of temp jobs. I look a bit like Bubba. I discovered that the more southern I put in my voice, the better I was treated as a temp worker. Apparently, they didn't expect much of Bubba, so just showing up made me a genius. I don't get it either, because usually it's the opposite reaction. I did get to really lay it on when I discovered Albuquerque had a cockroach hotline. "Folks, I'm from Florida, y'all don't know nuthin' 'bout no bugs. If they don't cheat at poker or leave the toilet seat up, they ain't bad."

Im originally from Dallas, Tx. Growing up I thought the "South" was like...over there. It wasnt until I went to California when I was 13 that I was termed as having a southern accent. However...just before I went to California the last school year I had become very good friends with a girl from Alabama. Now SHE had a southern accent and it was BEAUTIFUL to my ears. I mean...it was music like an Irish or Scottish accent is. But anyways. I can usually pick up exactly where someone is from pretty easily. At least their general area. That is because my dad was a born and bred Texan but my mother was a damn yankee..(dads words, not mine) and I also had a half brother raised in Wisconsin which sound slightly Canadian but now I'm babblin'. After 35 years in NC youd think I'd sound like a Tarheel...but only Texans think I sound like it. Its a strange world. We have all meshed a bit...especially in the cities nowadays. Lol luv y'all.

I think what has happened is that through media, such as news broadcasts, they got rid of the broader accents to the point of erasing them nearly entirely. I had friends from Georgia in the '60's with more pronounced accents than I hear from people from that same location today.
