Real POV Drive in Classic Citroen DS Pallas | NO MUSIC & UNCUT | Classic Car Citroën
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
[This is the second time I uploaded this video, the first one seemed to be incomplete.]
In this video series I will take you with me on my journey to perfecting the Citroën DS and more recently my Saab 900 Classic. It is my wish to bring the DS back to the way it left the factory. The Saab will probably be a bit more creative project. I hope you join me on this journey!

My father had a Citroen DS 21 Pallas, probably a 1968. Dark green, white paint top, gold velour seats, white leather on the inside of the doors. Adjustable height suspension. Beautiful interior, smooth ride, had a very stable and precise ride like on steel rails, laughed at snow with front drive and Michelin tires, and had about 2 inches of soft foam on the floor that kept your feet very comfortable. It was a very nice car. Long time ago. Cars gone, dad's gone, and I'm not too far behind them.

@SEIKA I seem to remember the height adjustable suspension was standard. But they may also have leaked green hydraulic fluid. My father mentioned "green blood".

@SEIKA This may be late however: The Adjustable suspension was pretty much standard in all Citroens except American imports since America at the time forbid cars from having adjustable bumper heights. These cars were designed to drive in their standard "drive" height. The low height setting was there for a totally depressurised suspension where the car would be lying on its Rubber Bumpstops instead and isn't meant for any form of "spirited driving". Some cars came with a second height setting, a rather "special height" or "loading height" which raised the car ever slightly above the normal drive height for some rougher terrain or to make it easier to load stuff into it. Then finally is the high height setting which raises the car to its maximum height but also means the suspension doesn't dampen anything anymore and driving at anything above 20km/h can result in bending the hydraulic struts. The Cars from 1960 to 2002 used the Green LHM Hydraulic Oil for the Hydropneumatic system which powered everything from the suspension to the power steering to the brakes. The suspension tends to leak when it gets old due to the rubber soft hoses (return hoses and low pressure hoses) cracking from age, and the rubber seals inside the high pressure system perishes after a while. The Cars also used Nitrogen filled spheres for the dampening, these had to be replaced every 5, 7 or 10 years depending on how much you drive the car. You generally note that the ride becomes harder over time as the spheres perish and the nitrogen leaks out of them. Pretty easy to replace them, done a few myself as I was in the process in 2020 of restoring my 1981 Citroen CX Prestige.

Well, that’s just it. It wasn’t ahead of its time. America used to be only Big competitor and so car companies set the standard on what was considered “luxury” and “new” but while that’s as happening, car companies in the EU and Japan were developing and releasing cars that were far better in almost every way than the common American car. The only thing that America had that the EU didn’t was the adrenaline and dopamine rush that you get when driving gas guzzling (but powerful) V8’s. This car wasn’t ahead of its time, but it was ahead of any car in the most power hungry, pathetic, scummy and (somehow) richest country on earth.

@@diplexnormal3353 I'm sorry, but I don't understand what you're getting at exactly. i am european and i can assure you that the european car market did not see the american as a competitor in any way. especially not in these decades. this car was ahead of its time because all designers drew their models with a ruler. both on the outside and especially on the inside, such as the dashboard. that is why it's admired still by many car enthusiasts. You're welcome.
We all know the optimal way to drive a manual shift is not to over-rev. This guy drives beautifully keeping the engine even, low and slow. Very unusual for young guys. Well done.
Same here, my dad had one, one of the most comfortable cars you could ever ride in. I learned to drive in this car. Blessed to have driven it at 18 for a number of years. Dad's always always regretted selling the car to this day and he's 94 and still driving. Go dad. xxx DG
French elegance at its very best! Unique design and technology, way ahead of its time. These surely qualify as one of the best Classic cars of all time. Thank you for sharing the ride with us.
Listening to its authentic sound is so much better than musik, passing the bumps like that is absolutely unbelievable and gorgeous, and calms you so much, in that stressful life...
Lovely car! Tried to drive one myself some years ago. Very easy to drive and the ride comfort is unbeaten!
Thanks for the "No music". It was beautiful.
Awesome video! You're a VERY smooth driver, and you make piloting that car look so incredibly effortless...

Few days ago a frenchman was driving in front of me. his bumper was totaly ruined and I remembered what it said about how they park cars in france (which includes ramming other cars). they seem to have no respect for cars. i wonder if that was different in the prime time of this citroen. where i come from the other guy would most likely beat you up if you drove into his car. we have a saying that translates 'the germans most loved child is the car'.
Love the whole action of start the car, get ready... Sit and wait for it to rise... Get impatient... Foot slowly starts pressing on the accelerator pedal. I can relate to that😂

This is all over just a fantastic car. Driving comfort in that class is not found anywhere else.
Saw one of these three weeks ago in a small northern village in Hungary in front of a hotel. With local old timer license plates! in mint condition. The parking lot was filled with expensive cars like Jags, BMW, Mercedes, oligarch SUVs. Everyone's eyes were glued to this car. Noone cared about any of the other ones. One beautiful beast!
Citroen - King Of The Road !!! How beautiful and it looks like he's having fun driving!!! How beautifully the gears connect !!!! And that's what I wanted...:))) Beautiful DS Pallas !!!
it just glides over those speed humps, this has to be one of the best cars ever produced.
Wow, in the early 70’s, as a new employe I went to a 1 week travel with someone who had a Citroen. That was a new experience for me, especially in the way the car was reacting to bumps on the road :-) while we were riding on an hi way, the driver insisted to show me how stable it was at oomph and drove a minute or two with the right wheels on the side of the road. It was very stable… but I told him to stay on the asphalt because I believed him… great cars
Great video! My uncle had a DS, 2CV and Camionette in the 80ś. He still have a 1954 Citroen Traction Avant B11 Sport that he bought in 1970. It is now fully restored.
Thank you for sharing this wonderful experience of a ride in a DS (my alltime favourite car) Advanced in all ways at it's concept and STILL looks futuristic§
nice... you waited for the hydraulic to rise before you moved the car! that basically is the only thing one have to do in order to keep it functioning faultlessly. my father (and later me) had a GS bought new in 1976. it was a "daily driver" right until I consequently sold it to an old timer enthusiast in 1998... its hydraulic still worked perfectly and was in absolutely original shape&form! all we had to do was basically just strictly wait for the car to rise before you took off.... now, just show me a classic suspended car that had original shock absorbers for 20+ years and well over 300k km on the odometer.... and then I had to listen "bar counter experts" about Citroen unreliable hydraulics for my whole life...😵💫 enjoy your DS... I "envy" you 😁😋

Beautiful! The DS is the most comfortable car I've ever been in - by a huge margin. The family next door to where I lived as a child has a brand new 1962 DS Safari and it was like a spaceship compared to other cars. I've been in other DSs subsequently and the ride and sheer elegant style are just breathtaking.

Classic! I liked that steering wheel and gearshift most, thanks for sharing!
Love this. I had an ID19, then another 6 or 7 Citroens. GS, BX, and XM. Best car in the world. The engine sound is very similar to what I recall from the ID 19. I now live in Los Angles, and they are virtually impossible to get here. And for a non-mechanic like me, no service is available.
I can hear the blind in your back window rattling! Exactly like my 69 21 Pallas. Love it!
"Sadly" I have "only" ever driven these roads in my XM. Thanks for bringing the ultimate version of such a drive a little bit closer! 🙂
i love these videos where no one talks, is just car sound and the environment
It's admirable the fact that these cars still run on the road today. They are marvels of engineering and endurance. I doubt that those who race up the DS at the traffic lights will still be around in 30 years' time from now, but I'm sure the DS will.
A friend of mine in high school had a DS 21, and his father had an ID 19 sedan and wagon. It is absolutely the most luxurious and smoothest riding car I have ever experienced..it is also the only front wheel drive car that I covet.
The owner looks young, yet the style of his watch is almost as old as the car, a reissue of quartz watches like Seiko or Casio ! If I were asked to define luxury in cars, I would say: comfort, silence, road holding, design, technological innovation and space, this car fulfils all these criteria, that's why it has become a world icon, because it's far ahead of its time! In addition it has exterior and interior lines that do not aggress the view, the forms are often round, soft and the ergonomics of the dashboard is thought as for the household appliances of the time and it is not a coincidence, the one who drew them was a designer in the household appliances! The door handles are very well placed, the grip is perfect, the single-spoke steering wheel is also revolutionary and contributes to the very Zen atmosphere that reigns inside! There is so much to say about this beautiful car!😊
Thanks for this, I haven't seen this type of car driven since my grandfather died and I couldn't remember how much I missed to hear it's sound.
Love it. Love the huge glass. Love all its quirks.
I had a DS 23 with fuel injection 30 years ago. Not a rocket at accelerating but it would do over 190 km/h and the ride was really comfortable.
Another great video! Easily the classiest car in the whole film! You can keep your M4’s, Golfs and Porsches.

Ha ha! So funny to watch the BMW and Golf screaming away from the traffic lights as the Citroen serenely cruises past a minute later. This owner drives the DS very well ( I used to own a DS23 Pallas with the same semi-auto transmission). A relaxed approach is the best way, the DS doesn't like to be hurried! It took me a while to learn this because I was an impatient young man back then!
J'ai eu la D spéciale, la super 5 et la 23 à injection, tout une époque !!! Je n'ai jamais retrouvé le plaisir de conduire que j'ai éprouvé avec ces modèles !
While the bmw and the vw were occupied racing, you were just relaxed in that hydropneumatic foam!
Was a frequent passenger in 1969. Fond memories of this remarkable example of advanced French engineering and design.

J’ai apprécié ce voyage avec vous.
Один из лучших автомобилей за всю историю!
Great video. I used to live in Apeldoorn, immigrated to Canada in 1973, had my own auto repair business for 40 years, in the earlier years still had some Citroens in service, some DS and ID models, even a few SM's . Too bad, most of them rusted out over the years, got sold and simply disappeared, parts became very hard to get, no importer anymore. Groeten uit Regina, Saskatchewan.

I've always loved these cars, as a kid when we saw one driving on the road my mother would exclaim ooh it's one of those bullfrog cars! She thought the front looked like a mouth of a bullfrog. It's been my dream to have enough money to be able to get one restored and own, but sadly I haven't won the Lottery yet. nearest I got was a Citroen BX same suspension system, but not as good quality. To change a wheel you would start the car pull a lever, the suspension would lift up the car, you would then put a special prop under the side rail then lower the lever, the supension would retract and the proped side wheels would lift off the ground! Crazy cool.
Love the interior on those cars.
Beauty. And ofc another car of DS's lover gotta be OG SAAB 900, another beautiful and quirky vehicle.
Smooth as butter!
