Real or fake? I X-rayed my Samsung Galaxy Phone to find out!

Ғылым және технология

I wanted to know if it was possible to spot the difference between the Samsung Galaxy phone I made in China and one I bought new at Best Buy. So I stuck it in an X-ray machine to find out! And the answer totally surprised me (not clickbait). Also, want to know how much the phone cost to make? Stick around to the end.
Thanks to the folks at Creative Electron (creativeelectron.com) for showing me around and letting me play with their machines!

    I don't think the sensor on your S9 is necessarily fake. Samsung used 2 different camera lenses depending on the market the phone was sold in. For the US-snapdragon version they used a SONY IMX345 and for Exynos markets they used their own ISOCELL sensor.

A relationship with my girlfriend of eight years ended two weeks ago and for five days straight, I pretty much went from from never having heard of your channel to having watched every video. It was exactly the kind of non-emotionally driven content I needed and it genuinely helped a lot. They're not though, Snint. Just means they don't have knowledge of this particular phone. Obviously when they're contracted by a manufacturer, they will be told exactly how many revisions of the product there is, and how parts are supposed to look. They didn't have the ability to here, since it was a blind test. All they could do was agree that the camera wasn't the same, and it "could" be counterfeit.

    True story: In 1992, at my second job after college, I got involved in early hardware-based real-time image and video processing, for the experimental radiation imaging systems we made (for X-rays, gamma rays, cosmic rays, neutrons and more). I briefly helped a project in the lab next to mine that was making a 6-axis robot (X, Y, Z translation + rotation) that was inside a lead-shielded box along with a micro-focus X-ray source and an X-ray imager. Why would someone need something like this? The customer was a TLA (Three Letter Agency) that had recovered military electronics from the ocean floor (you should be able to fill in that huge blank). This equipment contained circuitry that was state-of-the-art a decade earlier, and they wanted to know everything about it, from the connectors and wiring down to the transistors inside the integrated circuit packages. This had to be done non-destructively, as the equipment was already heavily damaged from its time in the ocean. While many companies could have taken on this challenge, we were the only one that combined X-ray source expertise with imaging expertise as well as robotics. In particular, getting highly focused X-rays generally requires focusing an electron beam on a minuscule spot, meaning the electron density was more than high enough to cause localized melting of the beam's target material, which then defocused the point-source. Our "special sauce" was getting "bright" X-rays that were also tightly focused enough to image at the micrometer level and below. Every trick in the book was used to keep that X-ray source bright and sharp, but even our best efforts meant it was "used up" after only a few weeks of operation, and would then need to be replaced. Still, that X-ray source was bright only by the standards of the day, and was only a few times brighter than a dental X-ray. That meant that we had to be extra careful to capture every single X-ray that made it through the target, and do so quickly yet with minimal degradation. Our X-ray sensor was a one-of-a-kind hand-built device (what we called "an escaped lab rat") that cost a bundle and would have been impossible to reproduce in quantity. Fortunately, it far outlasted the X-ray source, but did need frequent recalibration to maintain it's awesome performance. In Scotty's video, you may have noticed that the Creative Electron folks took a long duration exposure over many seconds: We were shooting 15 fps video! In its raw form, our best efforts looked like something viewed through a downpour; noisy and indistinct. Fortunately, our physicists had recorded some of that raw video and experimented on it for weeks to develop an algorithm to clean it up. Their software did a great job, but took minutes to process each frame. My job was to see if I could translate it to a hardware pipeline that would yield a frame every 67 milliseconds. Talk about having a fun problem to solve! This was literally "Math as Hardware", and the limitations of the hardware often caused the math to change to take those limitations into account. And when the math reached its limits, we then had to modify the machine itself. Since the X-ray source and sensor were already as good as they were going to get, that meant the robotics had to change. One trick (among many) in image processing is to sum up a bunch of frames (as Creative Electron did) to reduce the noise effects in each pixel which in turn improves contrast. A similar thing can be done in video, but only if the image content is moving "in the plane" (linearly in X/Y or rotationally along the Z (lens) axis), which is typically the case. Linear motion in Z (zooming) or rotation along other axes causes image distortion that is difficult to remove. Our robot had 6 axes, which meant we could easily compensate motion for only 3 of them. In most video, it is difficult to deduce out-of-plane motion accurately enough to even attempt these difficult corrections. But we had a robot, and by adding extremely precise position sensors to all 6 axes, we knew the exact spatial representation of every pixel, and could build the math needed to "un-do" the motion. Far from completely, but enough to be very useful to the operator while moving the robot. When imaging things at the transistor level, the robot would be locked-down and a longer image sequence would be taken. This meant we had a "deep" imaging pipeline. While we did succeed at operating at 15 fps, each frame arrived on the screen up to a second after it was taken, which made controlling the robot lag a bit, something the operators were able to adapt to. The chassis containing my software and the hardware it controlled cost about $250K at the time, which would be a cool half a million in today's dollars. Yes, I did get to play with some very nice toys! It's hard to believe that was nearly 30 years ago. Feels like yesterday. However, it is rewarding to see the exact same math used to create movies like Avatar, where "mo-cap" (motion capture) suits were used to obtain accurate position information in real-time. Since then, 4K video is now detailed enough to permit highly accurate motion information to be computed directly from the video itself, removing the need for external sensors, a technique that's become small part of the field called "Computational Photography". And now hand-held and head-mounted sensors are getting good enough to remove the motion sickness associated with early VR/AR products. Yet my system was doing the same math in real-time 30 years ago. It's even harder to believe I'm approaching the end of my engineering career. But at least I got a ton of stories out of that career. Rather than fight to the end to stay an engineer (and out of management), I'm seriously considering becoming a STEM teacher. You think young adults would put up with me?

    Fascinating read! You seem to have a real knack for explaining complicated processes in a manner that is understandable to those who aren't in the field. This is (sadly) a rare trait in the engineering world, and shouldn't be taken for granted. As for becoming a stem teacher, obviously I cannot say more just based on what you wrote here, but anyone who is looking to become a STEM teacher is sorely needed in today's world. Certainly I (a young-ish adult) would be more than willing to listen to you teach. (My background, started as an undergrad engineer, ended up changing majors to a blend of tech, society, and policy, currently finishing my degree. But I still love engineering, and also am interested in education, albeit I doubt I'll end up as a teacher per se.)

    This is a great report. Yes, from my experience, everyone appreciates a lecturer who has hands-on experience. Funny thing, the motion capture as it comes from the system in Avatar and that era in general is jittery and bad, and is cleaned up, in part automatically by just filtering it, in part by animators following it up by hand, basically recreating it while using the capture as a guide track. The facial movements got translated with quite a precision (possibly with a lot of manual help) but you can see smoothing and hand-keying which was done for all the body movements. Even when the capture looks to be remarkably good during preview, it still usually ends up being slightly bad on a rig of a 3D character for some reason, perhaps the locations or dimensions of bones not matching up, perhaps missing muscle simulation underneath the skin, so manual processing is kind of unavoidable.

  • @PseudoResonance

    @PseudoResonance

    5 жыл бұрын

    Lightning and USB-C are fundamentally totally different ports, and the controller chips are vastly different. This would require somehow replacing the lightning controller, almost certainly impossible, or putting some kind of adapter inside the phone, which is already very limited on space, seeing as the port is right next to a board. I doubt this would be possible, or if it is, it would be a huge pain for something almost entirely useless, as you would be unable to plug in most iPhone things without another adapter, which would be impractical. Sorry, but I really don't think this would be a good idea to implement on your own. Apple would have to do it themselves if you want it to be any more than an adapter built into the phone.

  • 5 жыл бұрын

    @@PseudoResonance yep, also it is common for the serial controller to be inside the SoC, which will significant increase the problem

    Damn, I need this second machine at work, we often have issues with the electronic parts, like bonding wire not contacting the silicone because lady at the factory of that component touched her face full of makeup and then touched the silicone before bonding, or carbon resistors just randomly going open circuit, or SMD resistors breaking and the crack isn't visible, x-ray would help a lot. Oh and my quick guess one the price of your DIY samsung was $300.

    No, the problem is that they're taking a completely different part, that doesn't do the same thing at all, and relabeling them and passing them off as a more expensive part. If they were making a compatible part, that would be far far more acceptable (particularly if they were honest about the fact it wasn't original).
