    A few Minecraft ideas: A chest that plays the open and close sounds from in game, a dispenser that dispenses dog food, a piston that raises a standing desk, an observer that automatically controls lights or unlocks a door when it detects a key card, a villager that trades emerald for candy like a vending machine

    Improvement idea: instead of having the acrylic part removable to change the bulb, you could use 1 row of wooden block. This way, you permanently glue the acrylic to the wood and you use something like magnets or ... well, there are many options to fix the first row of blocks to the other parts. I believe it would be more stable and as you have to dig into the first row anyway so the bulb does not stick out, I believe that it will work. Anyway, awesome project!

    This is smart. Since the whole thing is squares it doesn't matter at which line of blocks the thing can split open, so it makes the most sense to open it at a wood junction to not have shadows from magnets or whatever is used to hold the pieces together securely... as the tiny weeny piece of wood there is baaaarely holding the thing and it's gonna bump off place super easy.

  • @aequinoctiale

    Love this project... usually i get thrown off by minecraft projects because they are done so imprecisely, the blocks all end up wobbly and misaligned. Your attention to detail is noticeable, and all the minecraft elements in the background of the video are delightful. Especially loved the little lever sound when you turned on machines. Maybe for another project, you could do a shulker box? A chest seems too simple, it might be neat to experiment with a box that has a top that twists off.

    To get the forstner bit to work you could use some double sided tape, or painters and CA, to affix some 3/4 ply to the top and then drill through that. Once the bit feeds through the ply it'll act as a guide to keep the bit stable to drill through the walnut

    I've found, a tea towel in the bottom of the pot helps keep the piece off of the bottom. I keep it on the stove and have an ice bath next to it. I alternate between the hot and the cold. The hot opens the plastic,, and the cold closes the color in.. the more you dip, the darker it gets. Works great for visors and Jawa Eyes.

    @@Iliketomakestuff I just might. His light switch has two hot wires and two switches. One for the overhead light and the other for ceiling fan controls, which he doesn't have. I could pull that extra hot wire and run it to the Minecraft light. I don't have any experience with dyeing and gluing acrylic but neither did you, so I'm sure I could figure it out. I wonder if just using a sharpie or marker would be enough to color it?

    I loved the simple idea of a bevel on the wood blocks to give definition. Great idea, worked so well. I am wondering if Epoxy cubes would work for this too. They might also give you more surface area to mount to the base. Just an idea if the top doesn't stay on. I am really thinking about trying this project. thats really cool! do you think that turning every other wood block so that their grain are running perpendicular to one another would have been sufficient to visually differentiate each pixel without having to do the bevel? or do you think it wouldnt have been the look you were going for?

  • @earlye
    @earlye2 жыл бұрын

    So yeah. I made one. Pix in the ILTMS facebook group. Thanks for the inspiration. Super fun project. Differences: I used sweetgum because it's what I had on hand, and I used epoxy for the topper. Again, what I had on hand. I drilled matching holes in the topper and top block and used nails as dowels to mount the topper. I knocked off the corners for the channel before cutting into cubes, except on top so I could forstner out a cavity for the lamp. If I was going to make another one, I would not bevel the cubes on the outside and instead cut grooves on the table saw after glue up. That way they'd be more uniform.

    For the coloured acrylic, you could buy small sheets of specific colours and then cut them by size. If you really want to ‘dye’ them then use automotive spray paint. They work great with fibreglass and acrylic. Another convoluted way is to mix epoxy resin with the dye colour you want, coat the squares with it and then lightly sand to get that frosted finish. The torch looks fabulous!!

    That was awesome - love it! I made one on my KZread channel but I used pre-cut 1inch wood blocks and I made the light blocks out of coloured resin (I made a silicone mold of the wood blocks to pour the resin into). I carved a hole in the top of the wood blocks to hold one of those little led light thingies and attached the resin blocks to the wood blocks with magnets. It worked really well. But I love the fact yours is mains powered and attached to the wall - something I might have to recreate, especially with that lovely natural wood.

    If you ever do this again, might I suggest you just cut and score the acrylic as one piece(taping and painting each square individually for the different colors) so you don't have to reglue the pieces together. You can score deeper on the corners and heat the acrylic to bend into place, then glue the sides together for a lot less work and fewer glued seams. Also for the wood, you could alternate the grain direction or use different stains on the individual blocks to gain that contrast on top of the slightly beveled corners.

    A neat option might be to make the wall box into a normal outlet and the torch would just plug in. Then have a rechargeable battery and a DC LED in there. You wouldn't get the color change options from the app but you could make it into a power failure emergency light and then any time you pulled it off the wall you could carry it around like a real torch. Then if you ever wanted to remove it you would just have an outlet on the wall.

    the crazy thing is, assuming the pixels on every minecraft object are the same size, the base of the torch would be around 5 in. Each block is 1 meter cubed and has square sides 16 by 16 pixels, that means that each pixel is 6.25 cm a side or 2.46 in, so a two pixel wide torch is ~5 in.

    Very cool, but one thought I had, was to instead of mounting it to the wall directly using the box, was to install an outlet, then mold 2 plugs with ground pins into the bottom of the torch. The 6 pins would be able to hold it up, provide power and still allow removing it if needed. Have a little bit of a skirt carved into the wood, so that it covers the outlet and makes it look flush against the wall.

    Did you account for the thickness of the acrylic when cutting into parts to create a 3" cube?
