Real Life Madagascar : Massive Analakely Market in Antananarivo

**Analakely Market**, also known as the **Zoma Market**, has a fascinating history in the heart of Antananarivo, Madagascar. While it may have lost some of its former glory, it remains an essential part of the city's cultural fabric.
1. **Origins and Glory Days**:
- In its prime, Analakely Market was legendary. It was the bustling hub of commerce, where traders from all corners of the island converged to sell their wares.
- The market's name, "Zoma," refers to the traditional Malagasy market day, which occurs every Saturday. During these Zoma days, the market would come alive with activity, colors, and sounds.
- People flocked to Analakely to buy and sell everything imaginable: clothing, household items, spices, fruits, vegetables, and more.
2. **Diverse Offerings**:
- Even today, Analakely Market remains a packed and teeming place. Visitors can explore a chaotic maze of stalls, each offering a unique blend of goods.
- You'll find clothes, household items, and dodgy DVDs alongside an impressive variety of food products. From fresh produce to exotic spices, the market caters to every culinary need.
- However, due to the crowded conditions, it's advisable not to bring any valuables with you.
3. **Architectural Context**:
- The market is located on **Ave Andrianampoinimerina**, a bustling street in Antananarivo.

I am originally from there as well and currently living here in GTA. I don't know if you ever notice but this seem to have a closer look to the Downsview park market

Great video again. When I was at university in Germany 30 years ago 1994 , there was a girl from Madagascar, 19 or 20 years old like me then, and she was so extremely beautiful, I had never seen anyone like her. But she had a very arrogant looking french boyfriend, so I never talked to her. Now, 30 years later, I regret that very much! 🤭

Around 9:20 you say there are no shopping malls. Two well known malls in Antananarivo are Akoor Digue and La City Ivandry.

Many thanks, interesting. That remember me a bit Habana center in Cuba but with more tourists. Streets, buildings, hot, "poor style" if you allow me, I mean no investment by the government (probably no money, no judgment from me, just factual).

I'm an American that now lives in the Madagascar and I guarantee you it hurts driving in taxes and it hurts driving in buses. The drivers of these vehicles just don't care

Yes, I still have some problems with my left knee. I hurt it riding in cramped/no leg room buses last year in Madagascar. Most recent trip I took the plane mostly, it's expensive but worth it.

Where to change money in antananarivo.?

  • @pddembowski

    @pddembowski

I just changed money at the Tana airport a couple of days ago, the rate was 4400 for the US dollar. Note you get a better rate for US 100 dollar bills than 10,20,50 etc. There is a place in Tana called SOCIMAD, look it up on google maps. It's near the Sole hotel...I receive 4460 for 100 dollar US notes. You should change your money in Tana before heading to another city, I only got 4000 in Majunga at a bank.
