Real Life As A Young and Native American | i-D

Almost three million people currently identify as Native American - despite this, their place in both our history, and the modern day, is largely ignored.
For a century, the U.S government believed what was best for Native American kids was to strip them of their families and communities, their culture and language, their hair and clothes. Now, mounting research has demonstrated how this policy has decimated communities and been deadly to Native peoples. “Identification with a particular cultural background and a secure sense of cultural identity is associated with higher self-esteem, better educational attainment (grades and going to college), and is protective against mental health problems, substance use, and other issues for adolescents and adults,” a summary of research by the National Indian Child Welfare Association stated in 2017.
For 24 year old Delmar, learning about traditional practices is a way to honor her heritage and make sense of her place in the world.

It kinda makes me sad that this isn't ingrained into American culture, I feel like it should be. Kinda like how New Zealand embraces the culture of their indigenous people, it's kinda irritating that we have been doing the near opposite and making people do these traditions in the background, so no one knows about it.

You do see references of native culture in the U.S. American culture is a mixture of different cultures really. Alot of it tends to get whitewashed though. And I do remember getting educated about the native tribes in NC in elementary School in the 90s. My teacher helped make content about tribes in NC too. But right now I worry that people will be too afraid to be a part of that culture unless they ARE native.

Speaking of alcohol abuse, those North & South American countries Colonized by Anglo British, Spaniard, Portuguese and Italian are more of the same. Kill the indigenous Natives and whoever is left, marginalize them and create artificial poverty, once that poverty becomes crime & drinking, the media points to the poor and blames them to continue to stigmatize the 'other' community, scumbags! In my humble opinion, it's about time to decolonize the Colonized lands, and return it to rightful owners indigenous Native people. Here's the issue; notorious Slavery as well as Colonialism had long been over, why on earth is this another notorious Colonization still lingering on? In other words, they actually are great and proud people. All they need is their beloved father lands back, the lands that their ancestors had lived through thick and thin, endured through hardships of all sorts. I agree, it's about time to decolonize the Colonized lands, and return them to rightful owners indigenous Natives.

@@newyorkerjoe123 Like I said, genocide of indigenous native American population in continents of America 500 yrs ago was around 15 millions, while European population in Europe was around 20 millions. Today, Native population at 15 million, while European population ( in continents of America + Europe) at a staggering One Billion. History is written by the victors. Remember the well-known story told was that the indigenous Native people of America continents, who had no prior contact with White Europeans, were wiped out by diseases brought up by European newcomers when they first came over and occupied the land. Here's the analysis. How come another Indigenous African slaves that were brought over from remote West Africa, deepest part of Africa, who also had no prior contact with White Europeans, were not wiped out by diseases? The other story told was 'Cowboys and Indians'. The story goes like that native Indians were slaughtered by Cowboys. But what really happened to indigenous Native Americans, so-called Indians, and the real life story was further from the truth. In reality, they were slaughtered not only by cowboys, but most by settlers, civilian militias, military, and all are backed by general populace, the country and the government, as a whole, since every groups had nothing to lose but more to gain. The plain truth, of course, is that the indigenous native Americans were all slaughtered in order to get their land, plain and simple! Imagine what would it be like today if Native Americans had possessed some sort of nuclear weapons to defend themselves, and their beloved motherlands from Colonizers? In my humble opinion, the indigenous Natives still would get to hold of the wealth of their bountiful lands intact, as well as their population grew to a good several hundred millions, no doubt about that. Google 'Shrinking Uncle Sam/China Daily' for honest truth. blog.chinadaily.com.cn/forum.php?mod=viewthread&tid=1795128

@Carpe Diem We are seperated culturally. We have different cultures and tribes that aren't all the same. Majority of us don't practice the same customs our relatives the Siberians/Asians do. Also Yea we did "recreate" things, like I said all our tribes have different cultures, customs and languages. I also know I'm Asian but that I'm also not as I said since culture and genetics which both can be similar but like I said they're different. Most people know us as Native Americans or American Indian so whether I call myself that has no concern with you. Also what's Native's problem you say??What's YOUR problem? I call myself by my tribe and Native since even Asians don't associate us with them. And I already know the Bering Strait and that we are on reservations now(tell me something I don't know I guess).

@Carpe Diem EVERY Native culture you say??Native's split up and became different tribes and peoples like the Anasazi, Amazonid, Planazoid, etc we have some similarities in our legends compared to siberian legends, but after 34,000 years I don't think ALL our cultures and customs can be traced back to Asia since some tribes have split into others while being in America like the Anasazi (Who are now tribes like the Hopi, Zuni, Acoma, and Laguna).I know you can't change your race but as I said we are Asian in a sense but also aren't whether you like it or not, that's why we call ourselves Native American or American Indian instead. We can see that genetically they were related to Asians then near Lake Baikal and in the Amur River valley. But they changed and became a new people. They have different mixtures of genes and the genes have new variants. There is just one Y-DNA haplotype at a general level. There are different subtypes in the New World. Because they changed and became a new people. The places where this one is most common in Asia is actually now thought to be from Back-migration moved west out of Beringia. Q-M3 subtype likely evolved 15,000 years ago in east-Beringia, in the Seward Penisula. Then the Beringia land mass began submerging, cutting off land routes. Note, this is not from Asia. It evolved in a now submerged landmass or in the adjacent American continent. Then new lineages evolved from this. 90% of native people in South America have a version of this group. Our ancestors did come from Asia but they changed to new types in the New World. In a very real sense, they were created in the New World and are from America, not from Asia.

My family immigrated to America from Italy in 1921... so with that said I have no idea why I have always felt such a strong connection to the Native American people. To me this was the most awful genocide in history. These people were/are actually in tune with the Earth, with Spirit, with Love, with the Heavens, with other life forms, with past lives...with everything that truly matters. I wish nothing but a huge 'rebirth' for all the Native Tribes, I wish they would become the teachers of the future as they are the only ones with the real answers...

No offense to others religion but in my eyes Christianity was used as a weapon amongst all the Natives. To destroy our peoples Culture, religion, and language. They’ve succeeded sadly. I know plenty of Navajo people and Cherokee. No one ever speaks of our Holocaust i must say, cause it’s the truth. These lands are built on lies, murder, rape, racism, etc. Checking ones DNA now a days its all fucked up cause of what happen. No recognition whatsoever. Ffs there’s a team called the Redskins like, it truly upsets me. As an indigenous youth (ojibwe) I think it’s really important for other indigenous people, regardless of age, to see that they’re not alone. Many people around me use drugs and alcohol to get rid of any pain that they feel. I personally don’t use anything of that sort, but that has been a way for me to see the tragic trends that follow these strong people that do. It hurts my heart to see my fellow natives fall into this viscous cycle that is tragically bound to happen. As I get older, I see more clearly why people do what they do but it still hasn’t crossed my mind why they keep doing it if they know it hurts them, and those around. Not just talking about young people but people of all ages around the reservation. Anyway, I think this is an important way to reach out to those that are struggling and a little reassurance that they don’t have to keep going into theses tragic cycles. 💜🔴🌕⚪️⚫️💜

That depends how you classify Mexican migrants and other hispanic Americans. If you compare present day Spaniards and most 'Latino' Americans you can clearly see the influence of native ancestry on the latter. Most Spaniards look like French or British people. Many 'Latinos' are a substantial part native, they just don't have the directly handed down culture, their culture is a blend of European and Native South American.

I really appreciate this short documentary on native american youth. Often times the media portrays my culture in a way that dehumanizes us, like we're not regular human beings like everyone else. intergenerational trauma affects so many people still, giving us a way to be heard to others helps to bring attention to the fact we still have a lot of issues stemming from the things our ancestors endured. I wish there was more content like this out there. :)

I am not native to this land. I honour the spirit of these young people and the ancestors before them for their sufferings and teachings. You have gone before us, it’s only a matter of time before the rest of humans also suffer loss of culture and family, the loss of soul, and you are teaching us how to recover ourselves, our humanness, our connection to the sacred. You show us the strength and fortitude we will all need to anchor our lives back on this planet. For this I honour you and all native peoples and their ways. Thank you.

You are all wonderful, strong, real, brave and courageous. The world needs you, you are needed and wanted. Keep your sacred traditions they are the truth not this BS American society based on greed and criminality. I love you. I believe in you.

So happy to see you in your healing journey and keeping in touch with your ancestors and reviving the ancient memories, so glad you are sharing with the public and it warms my heart . Continue on your healing journey and it may inspire others caught in the "matrix" to let that melt away and become authentic human beings. May the Divine Presence/the GREAT Spirit continue to guide you and bless you individually, as a people for now and for all times. I know I have had Native blood before, but not this life. We live many lives and learn many lessons. Thank you for sharing

Did you know: in a lot of tribes including mine (Okanagan tribe) one of the biggest native territories. Women in our tribe are more valued than us men. Because they go through pain giving life. Men still do a good part with hunting, building and cutting up the hunted meat, Women do the house work, but are still more valued because like I said earlier they’re life givers and they raise the future generations. Women should always be respected.

As a mexican american we are taught to be more spanish and neglect our native side. Signing paper for my immigrant mother I would always question why I would need to put white for race, she never knew either because she isnt very educated but now that I've grown up I know that I am Native and I should love that part of me. Im trying to learn the native language of where we come from which is Nahuatl and gain knowledge on our traditions and I hope many mexicans who are in the same situation do the same. ❤
