Real Goes To Suriname - Part 2 - Learning From Our Neighbours

Join me as I take another look at our neighbour Suriname, this time comparing the quality of life with a special focus on transport infrastructure to see what we in Guyana could be doing differently and better. Suriname is by no means the best country in the world nor is Guyana the worst but I draw these important comparisons to inspire you with what is possible right next door. Know that it could never be unpatriotic to criticize your homeland with the aim of agitating for positive change. If we never have the courage to point out what doesn't work, how will we have understanding necessary to devise the necessary solutions? When you find yourself living in one of the poorest countries in the world with one of the highest paid governments in the world, know that you are well within your right to demand quality service. Eavesdrop on my conversation with a Guyanese who recently moved to Suriname and listen to his answer when I try to find out what it would take to bring him back. Visit the St. Peter and Paul Cathedral and compare it with the St. George's Cathedral in Georgetown which is fast becoming the world's tallest wooden fire hazard. Let's talk about the maintenance of public spaces and stop in for an interview with the station manager of the Paramaribo Central Bus Terminal to get some good advice on how to transform the Stabroek Bus Park in Guyana. There is no shame in the search for knowledge, best practice or understanding nor is there any admitting we don't have all the answers. The real shame is in ending or failing to begin this search because of ignorant pride for there is truly no good reason. If you look at this channel and see footage you hate, don't hate me for it. Hate reality then let's work on changing it into something we can all fall in love with. Subscribe to stay in the loop, hit like so others see this video in their feed and look out for the final part in this series - A Tale Of Two Zoos. Over to you...

Real Guyana,i am Surinamese and i have a lot of respect for your video's.Let me first start to say that Paramaribo was also a very dirty filthy city full of garbage in the streets. The funny and at the same time sad thing was,Surinamese people like to keep their houses clean, but at the same time they threw dirt on the streets!!This is why the Surinamese government had to do something about it,because you cannot keep your houses clean only and then use your own country/city as a garbage place to throw your dirt everywhere!I think there are two keywords, and that is "mentality" and "investment".We know that it is very hard and difficult to change a mindset of a entire population, but i can ensure you that it WILL work if the Guyanese political leaders starting to use media channels to warn those people that "we are very serious now and enough is enough,if you throw garbage on the streets,we will let you pay for that!!I think that Guyana and Suriname are not that different,we have the same culture, share the same history and in fact these two countries are beautiful diamonds, but we must keep our countries clean and orderly at all times. It's better for the tourism sector also, because how can we invite people from outside to come to Suriname/Guyana if we mess up our own country.Keep up the good work,i hope that the Guyanese government will hear your voice because it's a very important message you have here for a better orderly and cleaner Guyana! Many greetings brother.

I love Guyana and I do believe that if positive changes are made, it can redeem the beauty that it was once had. Keep on doing what you do because I support it. I pray that this reality sinks in with those that can make a difference.

Dear Real Guyana, I just want to compliment you with the good work you are doing in order to force a change for a better Guyana. You would be a great documentary maker and I really think you have a good heart and you really want to see a change for the better for your country. As a matter of fact you should be part of the government, Guyana needs honest people like you to reign over the country and make it a good place to live in. I can’t imagine that a Guyanese would hate you, they should be proud of you, because if nobody address the huge problems Guyana is facing and the corruption (which is the main cause of the misery Guyana is facing), how would Guyana developed itself? Lots of respect for you and I will keep on following you and I hope Guyana will develop itself due to your contribution. Nice footage of Suriname/Paramaribo again and I hope you have more, because there is more to see in Paramaribo then what you’ve portrayed so far (the old city, the strip (tourist section), Palmentuin (Palm Garden), Hermitage mall, Maretraite mall and several other highlights in the city. Can we expect more? Keep up the good work!

Joan Jagendort Thank you first of all for the support and secondly for being one of the people with a deep understanding of what I am trying to accomplish with these videos. It is true that there is much more to Suriname as there is to Guyana but most unfortunately a virus wiped out much of the additional footage I collected. That said I am more than happy to revisit and collect more to share the experience of driving up the mountain to Brownsberg or a visit to Brocopondo. There is footage from the Hermitage at the end of part two which is now up but this and a trip to the Paramaribo Zoo which I hope to feature in Part 3 will exhaust the footage I was fortunately able to recover. Many thanks once again for the support.

My dear friend as I said from my comment on the part 1 video I am a senior citizen, when I was a kid growing up in Georgetown right outside of big market there us to be a bus park very organized and orderly when the buses were run by private owners in New Amsterdam it was the same thing even when the Tata buses came in I remember seeing passengers standing in line in the villages on the road to board the bus this was back in the 70's. Guyana needs structure and and adherence to the laws and the government needs more involvement in what goes on, be it transportation, healthcare, hospitality etc. People need to be professional in their jobs and the police department needs reforming. Guyana is not lacking of intellect . Be blessed be safe 🙏💕🇬🇾

The laws in Guyana needs to be be exercised with penalty for those who litter the place.People need to be charged for littering and systems needs to be put in place like having littler wardens charge people for littering.I would also encourage my fellow Guyanese to travel and see how other countries are or watch videos like this one and learn from them.Guyanese likes to blame the govt for everything but at the end of the day ,yes govt can help but ,it's up to the citizens to keep their surroundings clean. If the citizens do their part that's 90%.Another thing is attitude,Guyanese needs to be more united they are devided as hell along race and politics and that's the big problem with Guyanese and Guyana. So long as Guyanese remain this way Guyana will never get good.

Also after world War 2, Britain was bankrupt. In matter of fact, Britain was stupid, Britain could have gave Guyana over to Brazil which Britain owed billions of dollars to. Britain owned billions of dollars for its survival against Hitler. Britain could have helped Guyana out only of Guyana remained a Commonwealth in the British realm, but Guyana became a Republic instead. Times are different. After 1783,Britain resumed trade with the United States and this lead America to grow. Fast forward 200,this was the exact opposite for Guyana.

I'm from Suriname and i can tell you that the Dutch didn't do that much for our country. A great deal of the so called development aid you're speaking of flowed back to the Netherlands through consultants and such. They never even build one bridge over our most important rivers. In that aspect they don't differ much from the British.

Its always good to put things into perspective. And this should be an eyeopener. I'm Surinamese and the one thing we could say that in my opinion contributed to this success is that we have had much debate oabout where we were as a country. the result of this has been more political engagement as a whole. Now, we are even the first caricom nation to recognize that LGBT people should be treated equal. Sinds 2011 annually a Pride Walk is kept throughout Paramaribo, without any problems of public fighting and so on. My conclusion is that Guyanese have to start treating thereselfs better. And then it comes to this, Guyanese have to give more value on education. that's what we have been doing, rather than making money fast. However i would like to point out that its not perfect everywhere in Suriname, because in the east that is predominantly "Maroon"inhabitants, there are a lot of problems. If you were to go to French Guyana at the border, tugging is definitely a problem. The town of Albina isn't developed as its Westly counterpart Nickerie, because of the braindrain and somewhat anarchial way of living. But is definitely something that is being discussed about. Thank you for sharing. I'm a Guyanese diaspora, in the sense that my mother is from there, and i have always kept Guyana in high esteem, so i to would like for Guyana to prosper more. I have even dreamt of the to becoming a confederation.

Suriname you still have the European influence, and in Guyana ...I dont know what that crazy 3rd world disaster that is going on there. 18:09 lol Guyana is actually going to get worst or else they have to import people who who are trained in building and designing roads and infastructure....no one left with that sort of experience or training They dont even have people who can organize a parking bay for vans (minbus) so people can get on and off properly

Guyanese and Caribbean culture is to tell people point blank what they dont want to know, whether they like it or not. And that is what he is doing I bet like most of the people on here (myself included) you don't even live in Guyana. why cant you compare it to another country.? What is so special about Guyana that you cannot compare it it to other places. How would you know if the country is on the right path if you cannot compare it to a neighbor that's extremely similar? For example if you have a business and the business is not doing well. Wouldn't you look around to see what the other similar shops that re doing better, so you can copy some of their ideas. Or would you keep doing the same thing, until you you go bankrupt?

The police in Guyana take bribes from bus drivers because they put themselves in a position where they throw box hand & they have to get money by a certain time. & the Police Force isn't paying these ranks a proper salary that's why they're doing what they're doing. If they pay these people properly, we wouldn't have this problem

I life in Belgium now l was born in Brazil and look what you can do when you work hard and choose the right goverment. The bigest poisen to a contry is corruption. And when this happens in front of your nose in time you will find it normal. And that is not an good example to the population and genaration to come. etc etc

Suriname has pretty bad governments to be honest. With some "regular" ones between 1990-1996 and 2000-2010. But somehow even our worst ones don't to match the worst ones in the rest of South America. I think its more to the people and the mentality. One big difference in outlook is that Surinamese tend to compare the country with Holland or USA so we always look bad and want to do better. From my experience other South Americans just compare among themselves. The Brazilians will say oooh haha those poor Bolivarians, we are soo lucky, the Argentinians will say ooh those Brazilians we are soo lucky we live in Argentina. We in Suriname we moan about everything, and we look up to those doing well, not down on others that are in a worse shape than us. Only that way you can learn and improve.

No amount of oil money will make Guyana better. We need a Government of younger ,capable and futuristic politicians, well off before they are placed in Office, open minded and see all the citizens as Guyanese. Not Afro, Indo Guyanese, etc.I should be noted that we do not have a GUYANESE CULTURE. UNTIL SUCH TIME, AND WHEN THE CITIZENS ACCEPT EACH OTHER WITHOUT PREJUDICES, AND REALIZE THAT WE ARE ONE, WE WILL ALL BE USED BY POLITICIANS. WE NEED TO SEE DOCUMENTARIES ON THE SIDDIS OF INDIA, TO SEE HOW THEY LIVE. ONE SIDDI MALE TOLD AN INTERVIEWER, THAT HE THINKS OF AFRICA, BUT HE IS INDIAN.

I'm looking at your video to see these "Tauts" that are manhandling women and I didn't see any. I have been to Guyana many times and have not seen these "Tauts" manhandling women. My point is, i'm sure you have them, but from your commentary , one would think that its more the rule as opposed to something that occurs once in a while. Therefore, more like a fallacy of composition. The reason I point this out was because you said it to the young man in Suriname as a matter of fact., as opposed to saying that it sometimes occurs in Guyana.

Another problem for Guyana is that it can not attract foreign investors. If Guyana can attract foreign investors, it would be easy for Guyana to develop. It Nasty when Guyana a screwed over a wealthy Brazilian who wanted to make money by recycling unused machinery and structures. Such stories like this as an foreign investor, would make me reluctant not to invest on Guyana. Another big problem for Guyana is capital flight. Wealthy Guyanese send thier money to ABC countries Brazil, Trinidad and such. Guyana needs to add taxes on wealthy who send their money overseas. A Guyanese told me one thing, it's either Guyana gonna rob you, or you gonna rob Guyana. It never works in between. This is why drug trade, smuggling, human trafficking are such big thriving businesses in Guyana

One of the reason that the police station looks so bad, is that since the Revolution in the early eighties there has always been some kind of feud going on between the Armed Forces and the police. The old military leaders have the power now therefore the construction of the new headquarters of the police was stopped.

Ninety percent of the inhabitants live on the narrow coastal plain in Guyana, where population density is more than 115 inhabitants per square kilometre (300/sq mi) and its the same for Suriname in the densest regions. The population density for Guyana as a whole is very low at less than four inhabitants per square kilometre (10.4/sq mi) while for Suriname is 3 people per square per square mile as a whole so please fact check.
