He's speaking words from a script. However "smart" he may be in real life, he's still "playing" smart because that's what *acting* is. Otherwise you're saying that he can't play stupid. But it's not a problem for smart people who are good actors to play stupid.

@@NoHandleGrr they all are. though rudtger hauer added to his soliloquy at the end of blade runner. all actor are saying most actors are speaking someone else's words. plus they have years to practice. and with movies many attempts at crafting the needed delivery. hey, it's business of lies. but we have grown to depend on those lies. so much so that now the liars are paid more for two years work then those who actually perform those tasks in real life.

I *LOVE* this movie. It's one of the best comedies to come out of the 80's and is *criminally* underrated.

In the early 2000’s I worked at a video store in los angeles and Val Kilmer came in to buy a copy of this for his kids to watch. We ended up talking movies for two hours. Also, his kids were the least annoying kids ever.

Fun fact, this movie came out a year before the B1 Lancer was introduced to the public and officially put into service for the military.

It’s a moral imperative that everyone watches this film. Real Genius is an 80s gem.

Fun fact: 2 of the nerds in this are in 2 different Karate Kid movies. Mitch is in the third one, paid to pick a fight with Daniel in a club. And the Japanese guy standing by Kent when he's talking to "Jesus", is in the 2nd one that fights Daniel at the end. Love this movie. Watched this and Top Secret many times after I bought them.

I’ve always believed that, knowing Chris Knight, that he purposefully left the chip laying on the floor in front of the fire control computer on the bomber so Jerry would find it and start snooping around the open computer, trying to find the open slot, and look suspicious to the Air Force guys, and the fact that the suspected tampering resulted in it targeting the house that Jerry embezzled government money to build, made Jerry Hathaway look like a nut that purposefully sabotaged the weapon he was under so much pressure to create, even though he didn’t create it. You could hear the Air Force guy ask Jerry “what have you done?!” when they saw Jerry’s house on the screen.

Fun fact, Michelle Meyriink, who played Mitch's girlfriend, was also in Revenge of the Nerds, and Jon Gries, Laslo Feld, was in Napoleon Dynamite.

There is _a lot_ of montage! Thank god they all work, and the music that plays over the top of them is good...

An alumni of Caltech was a consultant on the movie, and many of the pranks and set designs were inspired by real things that were done there: the sweepstakes entrees, the car in the room, the space wall, the steam tunnels, even the Spanish tile roofing. Engineering stunts on par with the pool party were things that happened yearly there at the time. Several years after the movie, the inspiration went the other way, and the students turned a hall (nicknamed “Hell”) into an iced area. Two students performed a fake wedding at the event because, when asked, one said they’d marry the other if hell froze over.

Jon Gries is one of my favorite actors ever, his performance in this is incredible, as is his turn in Fright Night II and Napoleon Dynamite.

One of my many, many honorary "Top 10 Movies!" I have been saying, "Well then, I'm happy and sad for you," for nearly 40 years. I love Lazlo. So glad you're doing this. Here we go! :)

Michelle Meyrink(Jordan) was also in Revenge of the Nerds. She was a delightful actress that never quite got the respect she deserved.

For those who didn’t know, the closet guy Lazlo also was Uncle Rico in Napoleon Dynamite.

Ever since seeing this movie back in 1986, I have quoted his professor when ever someone calls me an a-hole or something... "count on it!" I like to file this movie under F for Movie.

Of course it's possible. It's called "sublimation." In fact, it's common. That "ice" could have been "dry ice" (solid carbon dioxide) which sublimates directly to gas easily.

@@ATSaale Actually, I recall reading not too long ago that the "traditional explanation" we have for skating (that blade pressure creates a thin layer of liquid) is likely wrong. It might very well be that you COULD skate on dry ice. Although this has nothing to do with the actual film -- movie magic, etc.

This was on cable constantly from 86-89. It felt like it was on the TV at least twice a week during that time. Me & my friends pretty much had it memorized back then. I haven’t seen it in 20 years or more, but I’m glad to see that it still holds up.

"Everybody Wants To Rule The World" is the best end credits song that wasn't specifically written to be an end credits song.

The pilot of the Shuttle in the very beginning is Stacy Peralta, the founder of the Skateboarding Company Powell-Peralta. One of the companies that put skateboarding on the map in the late 70's/80's. Also "Closet Guy" is Uncle Rico from Napoleon Dynamite.

Finally someone reacts to this! One of a bunch of highly enjoyable 80's movies that for some reason didn't hit that big when they came out, but are almost as good as the more iconic movies. Martha Coolidge also Directed Valley Girl and Plain Clothes. Plain Clothes is another underappreciated movie as far as I'm concerned.

This is one of my favorite movies of all time!

The girl was always my favorite as well. That actress did an awesome job. And I love the popcorn house.

Trivia: Kent (Robert Prescott) also played Cole in Bachelor Party in 1984 (the year before Real Genius) where he also played an obnoxious jerk who also had his car stolen and messed with as a prank.

This so reminds me of collage. It was very similar to this movie. Not only was it packs for of genius kids, we even had buildings with steam tunnels in them. One actually had a grad student decide to make one his office.

It has gotten to the point where I pause starting to watch a movie ("She's Out of Control") to switch to watching a reaction video. I too got the new Blu Ray a couple of weeks ago. It was long overdue for a proper disc. I remember catching it on HBO and watching it every time it was on. The school was based on life at CalTech, from the pranks to details like drawing all over the walls. Director Martha Coolidge made a comment on all the t-shirts, about spending a lot of time seeking out bizarre ones.

It is indeed based on Caltech and the dorms are accurately reproduced. As a Caltech freshman, I stayed across the hall from the "Saturn room" (Mitch and Chris's room) in what the movie has as Jordan's room. The cool feature of the room (which you can sort of see in the scene where Jordan is sanding her floor), is a loft for the bed that is seven feet off the ground. Apparently a mechanical engineering student wanted more floor space. Since the room had an extra high ceiling, he built a custom loft that allowed him to walk under the bed without hunching over. And he also built the bed- a heated water bed! Caltech was fine with the modification (the thing was solidly built out of 4x4s), and it was left as a permanent part of the room for future students to enjoy. Fun fact: the guy who exits the bathroom before Jordan comes in and you see walking down the hall when they're gassing Kent is a real Caltech student. He was literally the "Tech" consultant for the movie. His younger sister was in my class.

Michelle Meyrink is so underrated... She is an amazing actress.

She was in a film called Permanent Record with Keanu that was good..a bit of a bummer film in parts but a underrated film I feel.

"Just him and his sunglasses." That actually sounds like the cover for a John Cusack movie called "Better Off Dead". A movie that definitely needs to be added to the watch list. Fun side note: I was actually nicknamed Lazlo at work by someone because of where my office was located. While it wasn't in the basement, it was through several doors that passed through other offices. So it always looked like I was exiting a closet, or disappearing all together when entering.

I have a theory that for a certain portion of the population who grew up in the 80’s and hates the EPA, college professors, and journalists we have William Atherton to thank.

I'm so glad someone is finally reacting to this one! A friend taped this off HBO (or some pay channel) in 1987 when I was in HS, and I watched it all the time. Totally fun movie.

Another movie in the vein, is "Deal of the Century" with chevy chase, sigourney weaver and gregory heines as arms dealers in the 80's. A great satire film!

I love this movie. My favorite scene is when they're breaking into Kent's room wearing gasmasks and the student walks by like it's all normal. As an engineering student living in a dorm at the University of Colorado in the 70s, it was the sort of thing I'd have walked by. Or been wearing a gasmask.

The ice in the hallway was really done at Cal Tech in real life. Most of the stunts were. That's how they got the ideas.

I worked at T-SHIRTS PLUS at my mall when I was 15 yo and had 3 diff customers come in to make I HEART TOXIC WASTE shirts!!!! This is def one of the best 80's comedies of all time!!!! ALWAYS love you guys!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Val Kilmer wasn’t an Air Force pilot, he was a naval aviator.

This was my very first favorite movie. Kilmer has been at the top of my list of actors since I was seven or eight.

Check him out in the Robert Wise movie *The Hindenburg.* He doesn't play a douchebag...but he plays a good man who thinks he's doing the right thing, which is of course ten thousand times worse. 😎

Wow. I envy you. Seeing Real Genius for the first time is one of life's little pleasures. Enjoy. I grew up with this film. My friends and I would often quote it all throughout junior and high school. Some kids quoted Caddyshack, we quoted Real Genius. It's a great film.

The guy who plays Mitch was also in Apollo 13 and, briefly, in the remake of Poseidon.

It's possible that this is the movie that I've watched the most in my life. There was a time when I worked an afternoon shift and before I left for work this was running on some channel or other, and I just left it on in the background. That went on for weeks. Because why would I even bother putting anything else on when Real Genius is available?

I've watched The Princess Bride quite a bit more...but this one is definitely WAY up there. I think my #2 is actually Forbidden Planet.

When my Dad was in High School him and his auto class buddies actually did the car prank in the office. The got caught and were forced to put it back. Dad said the principal was actually impressed.

Another childhood favourite of mine. Val nails it with the witty remarks. Very quotable. And I quoted this movie a lot, to my friends dismay. 😂

It would be a crime not to watch :Top Secret!" as well. Val Kilmer is so incredibly talented and it really comes out in that film. "Spies Like Us" starring Chevy Chase & Dan Ackroyd is from the same era as this film, with similar themes, and is a must watch. Real Genius was inspired by SDI, or "Strategic Defense Initiative", the futuristic weapons program put in place by President Reagan, which was quickly nicknamed "Star Wars" by pundits, defense contractors and military types.

The guy in the closet (Lazlo Hollyfeld) is played by Jon Gries who is better known as Uncle Rico from Napoleon Dynamite.

During the scene where the professor says never forget to check your references, when Mitch bumps into someone trying to get away… he bumps into Tom Hanks.

I didn't see this when it first came out (I was eight), but I did see it in college in the late '90s, and loved it immediately; one of my top favorite comedies. Val Kilmer at his most charming, irreverent, charismatic, annoying, intelligent, goofy, and funny. Such a quotable movie! "Why am I the only one who has that dream?..." I had a big crush on the awkward girl, Jordan. I agree with Mrs: she's my favorite. Favorite experiment? The ice-to-vapor inventor casually hands Mitch a giant cherry, claiming that he grows them himself. But that throw-away exchange is never explained; it's just one of the "genius kids" being eccentric. Does a giant cherry come from a giant cherry tree? If so, where is this tree? If he grows these all the time, where are the rest? How much cherry pie and cherry preserves and cherry cobbler and cherry milkshakes can one consume? Could this technology solve world hunger? The world will never know, because this guy is not the focus of our story; Mitch and Chris are. So the giant cherry mystery will forever go unsolved... Other Kilmer favorites: "The Island of Dr. Moreau" (1996), and "The Saint" (1997). (an aside on Dr. Moreau. I found it quite an interesting experience to read the 1896 H.G. Wells book, then watch "The Island of Lost Souls" (1932), then "The Island of Dr. Moreau" (1977), then the 1996 film. Each version of the story uses the cutting edge technology of its era- with a sci-fi twist, of course- and explores different elements of the morality at play, depending on the era it is made in. Quite the interesting comparison, if one is so inclined...)

They actually tried some of these experiments on Mythbusters. The found that you really can pop popcorn with a laser, but the popcorn isn't strong enough to break through a house.

To this day, i enjoy this movie. For me, this film and Spartan are Kilmer's two best movies where he was the lead actor. But this movie put kilmer on the map.

If you guys have seen Bachelor Party. You should recognize the guy playing Kent, he was the ex-boyfriend that was trying to ruin the party so the main actors wouldn't get married. His name in that movie was Colt I think. He plays the asshole so well in movies. MythBusters tried to recreate this scene and proved it could not be done so it was "Busted".

A lot of favorite songs from this Real Genius movie, and I like playing the popcorn music montage, though I wish it was longer. Yes, this was one of my favorite movies from the 1980s. Most kids today will never experience the freedom one felt if you had the life experiences similar to the youth movies from the 1980s.

I had a douchy coworker that hated popcorn. So, I got popcorn air fresheners and put them in his drawers where he couldn't find them. And i got popcorn scented spray and sprayed his chair and fabric wall when I walked by. After he was fired, somebody moved over to his cubicle. She brought a ton of air fresheners to combat the smell. I walked by and opened the drawers and cupboards and removed all the popcorn flavored stuff. Ah, good times.

To this day if anyone says something good followed by something bad, I say “Then I’m happy and sad for you”

Randomly saw this movie on tv as a kid. Always love me some Val Kilmer! Btw, my favorite real genius is a tie between his character Chris and closet sweepstakes winner Lazlo. Also enjoy seeing William Atherton play the asshole antagonist in our favorite 80s classics but also enjoy it more when he gets his inevitable comeuppance.

I remember when this came out and I was in 5th grade. Seeing John Gries (the guy who played Laslo Ollie Feldon) as Uncle Rico in “Napoleon Dynamite” freaked me out.

The Audio COmmentary to the disc is really interesting..the director stated that all the experiments in the film are in theory possible...they had experts to run all the things by..Also that contest win actually happened, I think it was student from Cal Tech , thats why they started saying one entry per household and etc on contests..

Back in the 80s, I had a huge crush on Deborah Foreman (the general's daughter). This, April Fool's Day, My Chauffeur, 3:15, Waxwork, Sundown: The Vampire in Retreat, etc. Actually, in my opinion, she was about the only good part of those last two. One thing that always bugged me about the aftermath of the popcorn scene. You see people carting off wheelbarrows full of popcorn, but the popcorn destroyed the house, including smashing out the window. Which means that there's probably bits of broken glass mixed in with it. yeah, I know, it's just a movie and you're not supposed to think that deeply about it, I just can't help thinking that I wouldn't want to risk eating it.

The hijinks shown in the movie (including the tape recorders in the classroom) all actually happened over the years at CalTech in Los Angeles. The campus is full of real geniuses who invented many creative ways to relieve the tension from intense class expectations. They also did other things for real too gross to put into the movie.

OH! MY! GOD! Someone is FINALLY reacting to this gem! I have loved this movie since I saw it on HBO back in the mid 80s! I can literally quote it from memory!

The movie poster with "him in his sunglasses" you're thinking of is Tom Cruise in RISKY BUSINESS. Despite your confident assertion, there are no lasers in orbit powerful enough to zap a single person on the ground into ashes in a moment. If they existed, there would be triumphant magazine spreads and press conferences and write-ups in journals and a ton of scientific evidence and publicity. But, back in reality, clouds and atmosphere disperse laser light like crazy, which is why so far even land and ship-mounted lasers are good only for blinding missiles and possibly lightly burning thin skins, aka "soft" targets such as solar panels, in the best of weather. What will come far sooner are laser weapons that *in the vacuum of space* will eventually be able to outright vaporize material, but lasers that reach from orbit to the ground and vaporize are way way way not technically feasible yet. I'm kind of amazed that someone would blithely claim otherwise with no knowledge whatever, although, on the other hand, not knowing at all what you're talking about is the only way to make such a dopey assertion.
