Real Food for Everyone | Kimbal Musk | TEDxChicago

Kimbal Musk is applying what he learned in Silicon Valley to how real food can be scaled beyond just to those who can afford it. A true "farm to table" advocate for everybody, his family of restaurant concepts source food exclusively from American farmers. Kimbal's urban, indoor vertical farming accelerator empowers thousands of young entrepreneurs to become real food farmers. His non-profit organization builds permanent, outdoor Learning Garden classrooms in hundreds of underserved schools around the U.S. Kimbal is Co-Founder of The Kitchen, a growing family of businesses that pursue an America where everyone has access to real food. For his impactful, scalable work, Kimbal was named a 2017 Social Entrepreneur by the Schwab Foundation, a sister organization to the World Economic Forum. His family of restaurant concepts source food from American farmers, stimulating the local farm economy. His non-profit organization builds permanent, outdoor Learning Garden classrooms in hundreds of underserved schools around the U.S. His urban, indoor vertical farming accelerator, Square Roots, seeks to empower thousands of young entrepreneurs to become real food farmers.

Idea, Austin Texas "sustainable" riverfront park exhibition walk. Tesla sponsors competitions sustainable energy and agriculture that will be on permanent display. Catagoiries could include Aquaponics farming, permaculture food production, micro-hydro electric, water purification tech, 3d printing tech that promotes human and planetary health (printing homes) also hold tinyhouse competitions and rallies. Perhaps even build a tiny house community "for sale" to employees. My dream has been to start an AgTown (icoined the phrase) for years. AgTown will also be a show place for solar roof, V2G-VPP energy storage... Elon and Kimbal pays attention to you these channels, bend their ear on this totally awesome marketing strategy. If Elon builds it, they will come. Word of mouth will explode. I could probably convince my family to move there and help get it going if Elon gave the green light. Food has a high influence on mental health. Basically what you consume, becomes a part of you. Food is like a investment you make in you. Some young people in cities don't even know the natural taste of food grown in a natural manner. How pleasant it feels during and after eating. How energized you feel after a few days.

Hardly ever fresh or chemically free, It is never known where or how far, or what conditions, nor whoever the farmers are either? Of course, I have a few questions to ask you. Just these for now: are these foods your creating hydro feed? What kind of water is used? How about sun? Are these battery electric?

Where quality of life is still available it should be honored? Can this problem be solved with your dedication? Thank you so very much, I myself, am grateful for you in this challange. I’m sorry but the person consistently coughing in the background drove me nuts this whole video. It’s so rude to do that while someone is speaking when you can step out and get a drink of water or something.

Real food isn't grown in an artificial environment with artificial lighting and artificial nutrients. Real food is grown in a complex ecosystem with real soil that's teaming with real living organisms that are delivering real nutrients to the plants in balanced amounts. In a real ecosystem there are symbiotic working parts that all connect with each other in real ways. Bees, birds and billions of life forms all fit into this living fabric depending on one another for life. These plants are removed from their real environments. There's nothing real about any of this including this guys cowboy hat and his act.

While I agree, I don't think it's a realistic goal. I think it's the end goal, but this is a means to get there. The words he used may not be accurate ('Real food'), but they are powerful, and able to move people to be unsatisfied with industrial food. To me that is a step in the right direction.

Yebo Screbo from economic and environmental point he is probably right, but yeah as someone who was fed fresh dishes from our own garden, I'm very sceptical of taste of food grown this way

His interest isn't in real food as much as it is in starting another multi-billion dollar company. Watch some of his other presentations to see what I mean. He starts salivating when he begins speaking of the big business "opportunities" with real food. He is merely co-opting the idea of real food to get his foot in the door and bring our guard down. All the good intentions don't mean much when the end goal is just another Coca Cola (which started out as a health elixir btw). In my opinion, the answer is not big business - it never is - the answer is with real people and families connecting with their environment again like we are meant to be, using principles of permaculture to grow our own food. Self-reliance, personal responsibility and a real connection to our environment is hardly helped by big business. From what I gather, their ambitions are to shift the production of food from family farms to urban and rural warehouses which they own. These warehouses utilize indoor vertical farming techniques and artificial lighting to produce large quantities of food very efficiently. I would not be surprised to see such a company merge with and plug into the distribution networks of a company like Amazon to get the food from the warehouse to our homes. Amazon already bought whole foods which is a key move. No one will be able to compete with this efficiency and they will corner the market. This is a dangerous position for us to be in because the potential is there for a single entity to control the food supply. What Amazon did to the shopping mall and bookstore they will soon do to our farms and grocery stores. So what does all this have to do with real food?

Currently the agricultural industry wreaks havoc on the ecosystems you speak of. Combine that with the growing population worldwide, the demand for food is going to increase. The best way to protect those ecosystems, is to minimalise our industrialisation of the land, and allow it to flourish without human intervention. If science produces the opportunity for food to be grown on a large scale, in a minimal space, then there's an opportunity to save hundreds of acres of land from devastation.

Kentleigh English yes I agree except "science" is not the answer. Science is kicking the can down the road. The methods musk speaks of rob Peter to pay Paul and reallocate the costs to the environment into different, more removed ways which are less perceptible. The only way, as far as I can see, is permaculture. If I can grow enough food to feed my entire neighborhood from my backyard (which I do) without science, technology, grow lights, solar panels fertilizers... then I think it's more than possible.
