Reading the Qur'an as a Quaker

How do Quakers “love thy neighbor”? For Michael Birkel, it meant crossing religious boundaries to have meaningful conversations with his Muslim neighbors.

Transcript:
There is within Islam a sacred saying called a “hadith,” in which God is speaking and God says, “I was a hidden treasure and I desired to be known.” This was one of the motivations of the act of creation itself. “I was a hidden treasure and I desired to be known.” If that desire- that deep desire-is imprinted on the very fabric of the universe, then our coming to know one another across religious boundaries is a sacred task and a holy opportunity.
Reading the Qur’an as a Quaker
Conversations About the Qur’an
So I traveled among Muslims who live from Boston to California, and I just had one question for them: would you please choose a passage in your holy book and talk to me about it? The result was a series of precious conversations, because what they brought to the conversation was their love for their faith, for God and for the experience they had of encountering God’s revelation through the Qur’an.
The Experience of Reading the Qur’an
One of my Muslim teachers told me, when I asked him, “what is it like to read the Qur’an?” and he said it’s this experience of overwhelming divine compassion. You feel yourself swept up into this divine presence where you feel so loved that nothing else matters. Any other desires you had in the world just disappear. You are where you want to be. At the same time, you feel this overwhelming sense of compassion for others. And he told me if you don’t feel that, you’re not reading the Qur’an.
A Diversity of Voices
I spoke with Muslims from many places that are within the spectrum of the Islamic community. I spoke to Sunnis, I spoke to Shiites, I spoke to Sufis, I spoke to men, I spoke to women. I spoke to people of many ethnic heritages. If there’s one thing I learned, it is that whatever you think Islam is, it’s wider than that.
One imam-who was by 39 generations removed a descendant of the prophet Muhammad himself-spoke to me and said that for him, one of the jewels of the Qur’an was this notion that you do not repel evil with evil. You drive away evil with goodness. And if you drive away evil with good, then you find that the person whom you regarded as your enemy can become your friend.
Another Muslim teacher taught me that according to the Qur’an, when we hear about good and evil, our task is not to divide the world into two teams-here are the good guys, here are the bad guys-but rather, our inclination towards evil is found in every heart and that is where the fundamental conflict resides. This to me sounded very close to the message of early Quakers.
Encountering the Qur’an as a Non-Muslim
I believe that for a non-Muslim, encountering the Qur’an for the first time might be perplexing. You might imagine being parachuted down into the book of Jeremiah. There you land: you don’t know the territory, here are these prophetic utterances (which is how Muslims see the Qur’an) and in Jeremiah they don’t always have names attached to them. They’re not in chronological order and they’re not thematically arranged. I believe the Qur’an can read like that to a newcomer. That’s why I think it’s valuable to read it in the company of persons who have been reading it their whole lives.
What is it like to read someone else’s scripture? I think it’s quite possible that it can change you in ways that I can’t predict for any reader, except to say that it will make your life richer. It will make your life better to know this. I am not a trained scholar of Islam. I did some preparation for this project, but mostly what I did was go out and talk to my neighbors, and it changed my life. And so I would like to encourage anyone who’s hearing these words to go out, cross religious boundaries, talk to their neighbors, because your life will be changed too.

According to the Bible Jesus (PBUH) is "Perfect" in Hebrew "Meshullam". "Meshullam" is same as Arabic "Muslim" according to Ellicott's Commentary. The word "Muslim" is in the Hebrew Bible Isaiah 42:19. Following are English translation of the word "Muslim" in different English translations of the Bible.

@Lance Gin In Aramaic, the language Jesus spoke. They call God, Alaha. Arab Christians also call God, Allah. And, they were among the very first Christians. Do you want Muslims to call the creator God as if they were speaking English? Is that even the creator name? There is god, gods and goddess. Allah doesn't have a plural. Allah is not a man nor a woman. Allah is the creator of the universe and beyond. The Everliving, The Eternal. For your own sake, if you hate Islam that much at least try to learn about it by reading the Quran. You will know first hand what Islam beliefs are, instead of just listening to what Islamophobes would say. You have brain, read the Quran on your own. People like you are easily mislead. You follow what preachers tell you, you have no knowledge of your own religion. You go to church to hear one or two overrehearsed verses, sing a song and then go home. Repeat and rinse. Did Jesus and his disciples worship God like that? I am sure you have never read the whole bible from cover to cover. If you did that you would have left christianity by now. You are following Paul religion instead of Jesus. Your religion teaches things Jesus was against. From breaking the commandments to worshiping false gods. God is not the author of confusion. 3 in 1 is similar to other pagan beliefs. How can God be born and die? How can a human be God? Human that has needs. Excretes waste product daily. How can God pray to himself? How can God be 3 in 1. Why did God came as a man not as a woman? Why would God choose to be born from specific group of people? Wouldn't that make God racist and sexist?

It's one thing to read the Quran from the perspective of personal salvation; it's another thing to listen and hear what some of Islam's spiritual leaders are saying. Guaranteed, it's not much about personal salvation; it's very sinister much of the time - i.e. Yusef Quaradawi - "We will conquer the U.S. and Europe with our dawa" - or words to this effect. Americans, don't be duped by Islamic ideology. See what devout Muslims are doing and listen to what they are saying. And fear not for being called a bigot or whatever. EVERY religion or philosophy is subject to critique. Freedom of speech, freedom of expression, freedom to critique without being castigated are in jeopardy.

I feel like you have a good grasp of how Islam wants Sharia Law everywhere. I appreciate that you are willing to see the bigger picture and see the deception. I mean ... the concept of abrogation in Islam alone. Why is the Quran abrogated at all if Allah is a perfect God? There are many peaceful surahs abrogated by the violent surahs. Anyway, I appreciate your perspective. Have a great day! 😊

How come you say devil whispered to Muhammed while we usually say before we start reading in Quran "I seek refuge with Allah from the accursed Satan". Didn't you know that the Quran is the only book "after the bible" that reaffirmed the miraculous birth of Jesus who was identified as the Messiah "Christ". Marry was mentioned in Quran as twice as the bible with all respect and love and by the way Mary was the only female mentioned in the Quran by name. If you very much believe that Jesus is the only way, then, good for you, no objection but please don't trash or disgrace the others. Thank you

@Noah Wells The word "Allah" means God in Arabic. Both Arab Christians and Jews use the same word to refer to God, so, Allah is not exclusively used by Muslims. I wonder if you may use different wordage to rewrite the first 2 questions so I can answer them, sorry, English is not my first language. 3) I just wanted to let you know that Muslims highly admire and respect Jesus and his mom and none is considered Muslim unless he/she believes the same. 4) Mohammed was just a human being, he was not a god. Only God knows what will happened and he is the only one to decide what will happen to us. In fact, this verse proves that Mohammed was a true messenger from God because if he was a lier he wouldn't say so but he would claim to know all the future and fate of his people. "Say, "I am not something original among the messengers, nor do I know what will be done with me or with you. I only follow that which is revealed to me, and I am not but a clear warner."". Regards,

@@loriesunnyside5894 actually the Quran verse that Says Allah is one. according to Quran translation is the "Allah the union of". So we basically the Islamic God is a union of many. There is the verse about Allah being the best of creators. And there is also the first verse of Quran bismilah alrahman ALrahim = there is al meaning God Lah, God Rahman, God Rahim. Or Allah u akbar. < Allah the moon goddess and akbar the sun God.

If you were a two dimensional stick figure who only interacted with other two dimensional items and then some other two dimensional being tells you about the existance of a three dimensional object, of course you would laugh. An object with THREE dimensions? That is impossible! I think we agree God is a complex multi-dimensional being. Scientists theorize there are at least 11 dimensions, in time they will probably discover even more. So, maybe you dont realize that God is a spaceless, timeless, immateral, powerful, always existant being who is outside our realm of comprehension. However big we imagine God, He is much much bigger than that! So three persons in one being is very possible when talking beyond this 3D physical realm we are familiar with. Just like the 2D figure saying 3D is impossible, it makes 3 persons in one being very possible. And yes, Jesus calls Himself God by which the Jews wanted to stone him for blasphemy. We dont make it up, we just report what has been passed down. So please dont call the concept stupid, realize your mind is not thinking harder, had been poisoned by your imams.

Thanks for sharing the talk. I have three comments: 1. The first hadith you mentioned is a fabricated one. Scholars of hadith do not rate it as reliable hadith which goes back to prophet Muhammad. 2. Quran is not other people's scripture. Quran is actually equally for non Muslims to read as it is for Muslims. Quran is a message of God to the humanity. You may conclude after reading it that it is not from God or it is from God but not for me. 3. Prophet Muhammad is sent for entire humanity. He is not Muslim's prophet, alone. Vetting his claim and verifying is everybody's responsibility in the world.

The english language is so so limited that its hard to express the Quran to its fullest without understanding it in Arabic. 60% of its contexts get lost in translation because Arabic is on an entirely different realm of word usage, complexity and expansive understanding within grammar. Truly, only the ones who want the nectar will climb the tree to get to the hive. As salaamu Alaikum (greetings of peace) and thank you to this God fearing man for his wonderful words. Life is for the living and this man is crossing uncomfortable boundaries and being rewarded for his efforts. I too shall speak with someone of a different faith and get to know what they believe. Our prophet(saw) told us to seek knowledge no matter where you are. This is all useful knowledge.

I’m not completely fluent but can understand 95+ percent when reciting and it’s totally different than reading a translation. The general meaning may come across but the rhythm and rhyme get lost. Surah Taha and Surah Maryam are just 2 examples of chapters that have a sublime rhythm and sound and rhyme that is totally lost in translation.

I honestly doubt the authenticity of this one. Especially the "I longed to be known." part. Astagfirullah. The creator needs no validation or recognition from his creation. Keep in mind that the prayers we offer are a mercy to us from him. It is for our own salvation. We are given a chance to prove ourselves worthy of mercy and a great reward. It matters not if not one person prayed, or the entire humanity prays. The power of the Almighty will not diminish by any means. Again the point is, The Almighty is in need of nothing from us. He is the one that provides everything, and is free from all necessities.

Yes, God Kingship is not dependent upon our validation, He is self sufficient but this may mean, those who recognised him were granted Jannah and those didn't were thrown to hell. I find this statement "desired to be known" as the statement of love, that His lovers will testify his Kingship, If it was not for this recognition then why would some who doesn't believe in Allah go to hell?

Most Arab scholars don't even know what the Qur'an is saying because it's ultimately a very convoluted book with many errors, that native and non-native speakers will never understand unless they cease to see it as the immutable word of god and more of a piece of history. If you have read the Qur'an yourself you will also know it is very repetitive. Excerpts from this great article that you should also read: www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/1999/01/what-is-the-koran/304024/ "Despite its repeated assertions to the contrary, however, the Koran is often extremely difficult for contemporary readers-even highly educated speakers of Arabic-to understand. It sometimes makes dramatic shifts in style, voice, and subject matter from verse to verse, and it assumes a familiarity with language, stories, and events that seem to have been lost even to the earliest of Muslim exegetes (typical of a text that initially evolved in an oral tradition). Its apparent inconsistencies are easy to find: God may be referred to in the first and third person in the same sentence; divergent versions of the same story are repeated at different points in the text; divine rulings occasionally contradict one another. In this last case the Koran anticipates criticism and defends itself by asserting the right to abrogate its own message ("God doth blot out / Or confirm what He pleaseth"). "

xfghkhjfsejid see Muslim scholar not Arabic scholar , Arabic is Language while Muslim are those who submit their will to Allah (God) in context Muslim follow the teaching and practising of Islam. I suggest seeing dr Zakir , Ali's da wah , ef da wah , talk to Islam. Their is only one scholar mention here which Dr Zakir but the another preach the message to Islam so they have real knowledge about Islam.

Yeah you have to understand the Quran its not like no other book its what I would expect coming from God. Listen to the recitation aswel. Also look at ring formation of the Quran, linguistic miracles. All these you can see in English translation. Peace 👍

So by saying "Peace be unto you" makes you appear holy? Yet inside you are full of hatred towards the Jews? Explain to me why the True God of Abraham Isaac and Jacob should let you into his paradise?

Chill Peace... Human beings should all greet one another in this manner to express one's intentions... Even Jesus ( Peace be upon him ) said to not call him good and that only our One and Only Creator God Almighty Is good... Like I said... One Creator... One God... True god? That you are separating the fact as though there are more than one God; it only shows that you are not truly monotheistic... There can be only One Creator and One God... To even mention that there are more than one or to claim such hatred within a video which speaks of love and unity between humankind no matter what belief system one has; is not the behaviour of someone who has any right to claim superiority... Do you believe that you are god? Do you believe that you could even be the representative of God? You should check yourself and look deeply within to reflect upon your unrighteousness which you inflict upon innocent people... How can I hate Jews? I don't hate those who strive for goodness in their actions and who fill their hearts with love and Mercy for others... I hate oppressors! You have no power to judge me or even choose whether I enter Heaven or not... You are insane to think that you are able to ask such a question... With Peace Sakinah 🌹

Did you know that Jesus peace be upon him spoke aramaic. In aramaic they call god Al laa haa. The first Christians were unitarians that means that they believed in Jesus as a prophet only. The Romans turned Jesus into a man god because they used to believe in man gods like hercules and what not. Look it up. Read the Gospel of barnabus. Read the chapter called Mary in the Qu'ran and see what it says.

MuhsinTheMomin -- The Aramaic word Elaha means 'My Lord' and has nothing to do with the Arabic word 'Allah'. Some scholars claim that 'Allah' is derived by contraction from 'al-ilāh', which means "the god", others say that it is derived from 'al-Lah', the name of an ancient moon-god who together with his partners was worshiped at Mecca in the time of 'Muhammad'. The non-canonical and pseudepigraphical "Gospel of Barnabas" is a proven Muslim forgery of late medaeval origin - well over 1000 years after Jesus and his disciple Barnabas.

MushinTheMomin -- I have not used copy and paste on this occasion but it is sometimes a very useful time-saving tool. As for sources: you show me yours and I will show you mine. However, if you are looking for a timewasting trolling argument, look elsewhere since I do not bother to argue with ignorant closed minded idiots and trolls.

MuhsinTheMomin -- Your abusive arrogant and patronizing manner do not help your case or your image. I am not a "keyboard warrior", just someone whose education in these matters happens to exceed yours. You have not listed any historic fact nor provided proof of anything. I have never suggested that Jesus was God and I do not believe that he was. I was born and raised Muslim from a long line of eminent Islamic scholars and have studied these matters in depth at university level. I have yet to see anything to suggest that you know the first thing about Islam, Arabic or Aramaic. Are you Muslim? - I doubt it: if I may say so, you come across as nothing but an under-educated and immature troll. Get an education, grow up and stop posting comments on topics of which you obviously know NOTHING and stop abusing and laying down 'challenges' to people who know what you do not know. Do not bother to come back yet again since I do not waste my time in arguments with the ignorant, the abusive, the arrogant - or with trolls.
