It always amazes me that loco-hauled was still a thing during my childhood, seems inconceivable on today’s railways.

Wish it was still a day to day sight now. Not the same these days with everything being units.

Nice seeing how I remember the station for over a decade of my life. Forgotten how loud the diesels were compared to the electrics that replaced them.

HSTs into London were so frequent, I never bothered to check the timetable, just turn up and wait a few minutes.

Pretty much the same now just without the HST. GWR and Crossrail certainly supply a good connection between Reading and London. That's when there not on strike though.

8:00 Many a summer afternoon on the way home from work, I sat on the 'edge' behind that cabinet scoffing something from burglar-king. It was dining table or lectern for many a traveller or spotter. 31s, 47s, 50s, all there during the early 80's.

That unit at 50:24 is a bit of a mix-up, one CIG driving trailer, a CEP trailer standard, a VEP motor brake and another CIG DTC.

Was the front power car out on that departure at 7:35? That would have been a delayed journey. "the 11:50 service to Stratford on Avon will now depart from platform 8? Just as the 12:00 Virgin Trains service is arriving at platform 8. So that'll be late then.

If that was the 1243 service to London Paddington at 20:25, I'd say the 1123 service at 20:55 WAS somewhat delayed

Changed alot in 20 years, all electric now? and a HUGE station (covered in?) I seem to remember back in the 70's it was supposed to be steam, however they went electric (once of the first), so i only remember electric trains (the real early ones), but 2000 i wasnt really using them.

Gosh - Reading station as I remember it! It is quite a thing to see and hear the HSTs as they were originally built - and as I remember them! Would you have any objection if I were to use fragments of the audio from this and other of your videos as sound effects in a free, open-source non-commercial computer game called Simutrans under the Artistic Licence 1.0? I should happily credit you, of course.

Hello yes I'm happy with that. Its always nice for other people to enjoy my video and sounds. I've had another person from a producer wanting to use my video a few weeks back. Seems to be popular. Reading back then was a nice station. Had character which has now gone. Shame.

Thank you - that is very kind. Yes, I remember the station well as it was like this - I grew up in Burnham and went to university in Reading, so used to visit it frequently. It is lovely to see a piece of nostalgia like this.

Just wondering what diagrams the virgin hst's would have been operating through Reading at this time - always thought they were only used on the sw/ne main line route of Cornwall to Edinburgh via Birmingham ?

They were on services to Bournemouth and Poole. Crosscountry still operate services now but from Manchester. Virgin services use to run from Newcastle and as far as Blackpool in the final days

Now this is going back to good old BR days. , well as bringing back loads of childhood memories. I definitely remember Class 47 & HST 43 Virgin Trains Blackpool North to Portsmouth & Southsea services. Always went on them on them there and back every Saturday when my Dad takes me out on trains from Havant to Portsmouth there and coming back on them. Never forget they were 70 to 80 minutes late on a few occasions. Shame National Rail stoped those services.

Great Video 😆👍🏽 Reading as it used to be before it was vastly re-built and clogged with catenary and masts. Nice to see "NORTH STAR" still going strong on XC duties. Great traction back then. Very soon Reading will mainly be IET's, Voyagers and local 387 EMU's...god, how boring the railways have become 😥

I miss loco hauled cross country services. Why oh why did they get rid of them for 4/5 car ling voyagers? Most stupid decision ever.
