Your take on literary fiction books being about a variety of things is so true.. you definitely need to look through the blurbs and pick out something that interests you. Thats how i usually pick literary fiction books to read.. if i go in completely blind there's a chance ill hate it or it'll put me in a slump. You definitely wanna make me pick up My Year Of Rest And Relaxation. Can't wait to read it.

I loved my year of relaxation, you're right I feel like everything done in the book was very much intentional and I enjoyed her writing style as well. I feel like it was honestly really refreshing to read about a character that is so uninterested in herself and the world around her rather than overthinking and pondering every thought and the 'meaning of life'. I also felt like it was a pretty comforting depiction of depression and the feeling of just waiting for the world to end so you can sleep forever. I ended up giving it a little more than 4 stars too!

I liked the memoir "a stolen life" by Jacyee Lee Dugard. She was kidnapped at age 11 and got pregnant by her abductor twice. She lived in captivity for I think 18 years and had a diary that she also put in the book along with "present day" explanations and she talked about her time after beeing freed like learning how to drive or how she met her mother again.

My suggestion to getting into literary fiction would be to check out content creators who lean towards the genre and take recs from their thoughts on the books to get something which would truly excite you. At the start focusing on books upto 250 pages is definitely the way to go. If a book seems slow, you can read a chapter or two between your comfort genre and slowly you would be able to develop more interest and even direction on what type of literary fic speaks to you. I actually think it might be something you would start liking a lot more with time

I clicked for your review on The Paris Apartment and I have the exact same feelings! I've read 3 Lucy Foley books and they're never surprising. I knew the killer and motive in The Wedding Party as soon as the character's POV was introduced. "Paris" was the best of her books but I also knew the ending beforehand. I only liked it more because I did not guess the midway twist. Recommendation: The Grace Year was pretty popular a while back. There is a bit of romance in it so it's not romance-free but that's not the theme.

It is sort of like a autobiography but Dolly talks about her experiences with love and overall some crazy stories about her life as a teen, young adult etc... its really humorous and funny I would definitely recommend it! Another nonfiction book I'd recommend for you is Millenial love by Olivia Petter a journalist, who explores the questions, quirks and anxieties that consume the contemporary dating landscape. she scrutinises the myths surrounding modern romance and asks why, despite having endless technology designed to help wit communication, it’s harder to form connections!

Literary fiction’s one of my favourite genres, but since it’s not plot-driven I find it even more so important to vibe with the author than in any other genre. You literally spend hours and hours in their head, reading about what they care about and following their train of thought. If that’s not natural to you, it can get annoying or just not as enjoyable. For that reason I tend to choose books based on quotes I like bc that’s one way to see what type of a person the author is, what the writing style’s gonna be, but it doesn’t spoil the book for you. Then when you find an author you like, it feels more like hanging out with a friend, or just someone that gets you, and if it’s literary fiction, that can be on a very personal (deeper) level

i'm gonna give recs for literary fiction cause why not :) - okay let's start with Taylor Jenkins Reid !! this author is amazing just the best. i DEEPLY recommend "the seven husbands of evelyn hugo" + "malibu rising" + "one true loves" ! i need to read the rest of her books as well. first two have romance subplots and third one is about romance and life. so so so good. all five stars. - ariadne by jennifer saint : greek mythology retelling with a feminist angle. it explores the theme of why women always suffer the consequences of men's actions. SO GOOD. - the outlander series by diana gabaldon : about a woman who travels through time in scotland. there is also a great romance in there but it's not the sole focus of the book! so so so good. - i recommend books by sarah j maas for great fanatsy reads with romance in it -the shadowhunters chronicles by cassandra clare - the gossip girl books by cecily von ziegesar okay bye :) loved this video

i do think the virgin suicide movie would help you like the book a bit more maybe… two books that also came out around that time both which are memiors ( that were made into movies around 1999/2000 ) was “riding in cars with boys” and also “ girl interrupted “ they read a bit more like fiction though … both of the memiors took place in 1960’s so not being born then maybe that’s why it seems bit more like fiction than memiors ? …. i have terminal cancer currently that i’ve been dealing with a few years ( found it around my 32 nd birthday ) cancers gotten a lot lot worse lately so reading is one of the few things i can still do.. so i read a lot ! I read lots of non fiction , tons of true crime and just a lot genres ….. i’d love to recommend a few … i know romance is my least favorite genre though i still bread ir … so i often look at you and your book buddies recs , i have lots of rom come etc from years ago that i do think you’d enjoy .
