Often, Shen picks stories with engaging rhyme schemes and other types of word play, designed to sharpen letter and word identification skills.
Shen then presents the books in a way that draws children in, employing a variety of fun voices and hilarious gestures. Her colorful style is uniquely appealing to children from other countries and cultures. From the US to the UK to Asia to India, The Reading Den has viewers and subscribers from all around the globe. Shen’s “cinematographer” is her husband James, who has been a professional photographer for over sixty years, capturing weddings, bar mitzvahs and the most beautiful tableaus across the countryside. Jim also has a superpower, his innate sense of rhythm… as his steady camera work energetically follows the book’s text and drawings with occasional cutaways to Shen’s real time performance.
To act as an added incentive for young readers, every month Shen gives away a book from her enormous library (over 2,000 picture and story books) to one of her subscribers.
