ELP .. THREE ROCK GODS NEVER TO BE REPLACED!

carl palmer was one of the most criminally underrated drummers in the 70s, he was 20 here. my god, they were fun live. 3 times.

Palmer is no drummer. He is a percussionist!

Carl Palmer said in an interview that he was a Classicly trained drummer. We were truly blessed to have had Keith, Carl, and Greg's genius, and for them to share their genius with us.

Carl was also a jazz trained drummer. He was touring with Big Bands (Glen Miller style) as the drummer at age 14. From Carl Palmer's Biography: "At age 14 Carl Palmer joined his first professional band, a six-month stint with The Mecca Dance Band, for which he was paid a whopping 23 pounds a week. At 15, Palmer enlisted in the Motown influenced King Bees along with Richard King on guitar, Len Cox on bass and Geoff Brown on lead vocals. The band would later be known as The Craigs."

Emerson was definitely one of the (if not THE) pioneers of prog rock keyboards and showmanship.

Unique, saw this live in a smallish venue, they hooked me right in. 3 Geniuses. Still a fan 53 yrs later. INCREDIBLE EXPERIENCE to have witnessed UP CLOSE.

I saw Emerson Lake and Palmer in 1971 yes opened up the show I saw the Brain Salad Surgery tour in 1974, I saw them again in 1976 Journey opened up that show, I saw them twice in 1977 and finally for the decade in 1978 period of course I saw them several times in the following decades but the 1970s was truly their Golden Era and the ones that are nearest and dearest to my heart😊

ELP was covering Rondo, which was a Dave Brubeck composition covered by Keith Emerson's previous band, The Nice. If you liked this check out The Nice version of Bernstein and Sondheim's America. Keith's genius was definitely unique in rock. In ELP he still used the Hammond but really was the first rock keyboardist to experiment and use the Moog synthesizer to its near full potential. Palmer played with Atomic Rooster and Arthur Brown before ELP and still tours. His band is a must see before it's too late. Lake came from King Crimson. This was one of the first so called Super Groups, like Cream, Asia, etc. All virtuosos.

I think Cream and later Blind Faith were the first Super groups....just saying.

There is a real reason why Keith and Carl were voted number one in their fields for many years running. I saw them once and they melted our faces. So damn good.

Started listening to ELP when Karnevil#9 came out. Toccatta was a mind blower!

I saw them 5 times and was blown away each time. You must dive into in the ELP rabbit hole because there’s a whole treasure trove of brilliance to be heard.

Funny thing about the Hammond at one point early on when he got the machine he'd written the Hammond company and asked them how to do certain things... create certain sounds with the machine... and Jaiden brought him back and said that it wouldn't be possible with their product. I guess you didn't listen to them because a few weeks later he sent them back a tape of those exact sounds. 😊 The man was a beast on all keys. RIP Keith.

I had the privilege of seeing ELP live 5 times. As incredibly talented and popular as they were, the alleged Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame has refused to induct them, instead inducting Rap bands and Country artists and thereby rendering the RRHOF absolutely useless. Anyhoo, I hope you’ll delve further down the ELP rabbit hole. You’ll enjoy it. 👍

Back in the 1970s they won all of the polls and were considered the standard for excellence in musicianship that all other groups were measured by back in the day😮

Great comment let me add Rick Wakeman said if there was one thing he could play he wished he could do t a r k u s. Neil Peart stated that Carl Palmer was one of his biggest influences. Carl Palmer was also Phil ehart of Kansas favorite drummer.

If this really is your first listen then you have a lot more fun ahead of you.

I love this version of rondo alla Turca disclose the original by the Dave Brubeck Quartet out of the water man does this version rock all the way through and Keith Emerson was an amazing virtuosic keyboardist brilliant all the way through.

Great reaction and great choice. ELP is one of the best progressive band of the 70's, and certainly the most virtuoso... All this concert in Zurich is a masterpiece. Especially "Take a pebble", if you want react to another tracks of the same concert. Hi from France (and sorry for my English)

Not "one of the best", ELP were the best prog rock band ever

Just wait until you see the real kicker! There were, I believe, several concerts where Keith Emerson strapped himself to a grand piano, and the piano literally ascended into the air, then flipped over lengthwise several times, all while Keith continued to play! Then the piano sank down to the stage again. There are videos of this.

My brother saw that show. I saw them at Madison Square Garden on the Works tour with a full orchestra.

We miss them...

To this day, Carl is still a wonderful player.

You're another example of someone that never got into them and later years you're beginning to realize what you missed😮

I was lucky enough to see ELP three times. Just incredible performances. For something newer, let me suggest the band Epica. They're considered a symphonic metal band, but they are quite a prog band. I would suggest watching Kingdom of Heaven part 3 from the Omega Alive concert. You won't regret watching this amazing band.

Keith Emerson would never damage the Moog Modular, Hammond B3, or Steinway D. It’s fair to say that he voided the warranty on the Hammond L100, though. I think his roadie had spare plastic keys to replace the ones that were broken by knives the night before.

Was it the recent Carl Palmer tribute tour in which he plays along with footage of his late bandmates (who he misses badly)?

Saw them 1972 Frankfurt Germany in the Army and J Giles Band open it up it was Grand

This is apparently their attempt at Brubeck's "Blue Rondo ala Turk". They seem to have altered the time signature of 9/8. Bold to attempt it. They were evolving the form. Thanks for sharing this. The Hammond train was amazing.

Palmer was 20-21 when this was recorded.

There's a story about Keith writing the Hammond Company asking them how he could get certain sounds from his Hammond. They wrote back I guess a bit dismissively that nothing like that was possible. A while later thereafter the Hammond Company received a tape of those exact sounds. 😁

Palmer was influenced a bit by Joe Morello from The Dave Brubeck Quartet as well.

Brilliant Emerson, absolute legend.

Jerry Lee Lewis was another animated keyboardist, but he probably didn't twist his pianos into sounding like a locomotive

The video of them doing KarnEvil9 Impression 1 part 2 with Carl Palmer drum solo is much more refined

For 3 guys, ELP made a lot of sound.

Tell me about it! I used to watch incredulously and wonder how the hell three guys could make such full and complex sounds...

His roadies got tired of fixing the Hammond so they reinforced it with angle iron. Didn’t tell Emerson who pulled on top of him and couldn’t lift it.

I don't think this was the opening of the show. I didn't get to see them until the late 70s and 80s but they usually ended with this. I wanted to see your reaction when carl Palmer's drum set started spinning but this was before he had that. You should watch the Royal Albert Hall performancre.

How dare you stop in the middle of Carl Farmer‘s drum solo to tell us something that’s not necessary. Last time I listened to your show.

You say ‘that good in 1970’ basically in 1970 you had to be good, even pop by Marc Bolan was great live, you had to do it on tour to promote your music. King Crimson next but loads to do yet with Elp. Remember it’s Greg Lake on vox bass and guitar. You can hear Greg shout out, egging them on. Greg said Keith would ALWAYS speed up as the gig went on and he and Carl would laugh at each other trying to keep up.

I was at this concert in 1971 or should I say this tour... yes opened up for them.. I also saw them in 74 76 twice in 77 and 78.. in 1976 Journey opened up for them😮😊
