I don't know I you'll ever read my comment but I'll write it anyway... I adopted Diego from a shelter six months ago. He is my first dog ever, my whole life I had cats only, but I was always fascinated with the statement that the dog is a human best friend. I did some research before adopting, but damn, I still wasn't ready for the real life. I got as my first dog a reactive one. He pulled me so much on every walk that my hands were sometimes bleeding and couldn't even heal, because it was time for another walk. I've read some stuff on the internet that I should encourage dog with treats - nope, didn't work. Also I noticed that he got super excited while even seeing another dog from a distance. Then he started lunging at other dogs, which scared the owners. I got really anxious and started avoinding dogs on our walks, I didn't know what to do. And then he started lunging AND barking. I'm pretty sure he just see other dogs a source of "playtime" and "fun" and he gets frustrated when he can't get that (we live in an area that there is not so many dogs he can greet and play with). But honestly it doesn't really matter, I just wanted to walk him in peace and make new friends, but it was just impossible. Thats when I said okay it's enough. I've contacted a trainer who said would help me out with those issues. She interviewed me, I paid and... she said that I should join her training group. So I did and paid again. And what did we learn? Nothing. Tricks that I could easily do at home (and Diego knew all of them even before this "training"). She told me to send her videos of his bad behaviour. I did. "You need to stop when he pulls and when he looses his leash then go". I did that for an entire MONTH, three times a day and NOTHING has changed. I showed her how Diego is barking and lunging at other dogs. "Ohh you should just see where is that distance when he gets excited and when not and then work to minimalize that distnace". She never showed me anything in real life. And she is of course purely positive reinforcment trainer. One time I told my dog on our training "no" when he didn't listen and she got very angry with me. And then a miracle happend. I found your channel and your videos. I binge watched almost everything and I agree with you 100%. I like and respect Ceasar Millan, but his talks about "energy"... I get it but it's sometimes hard to achieve. I've tried your loose leash walking method as soon as I could and I almost cried on that walk. It wasn't perfect walking side by side but Diego didn't pull me A SINGLE TIME. I couldn't believe that I got that help for free. I cannot thank you enough. We train like that with corrections for a few days and I see so much improvement. Diego now checks on me all the time, he is more focused and listens what am I gonna say to him now. I even started talking to myself "I don't care, I can do this all day long..." :))) I live in Poland so I can't make an appointment with you and thats a shame, because I still have a few issues with him, but all I want is to say a huge THANK YOU. You made my walks with my dog a positive experience for both of us, with no frustration and blood, just confidence and calmness. Your work and knowledge is everything. Thank you Joel. Stan

My dog's an adoption as well and I started watching KZread training videos several weeks before I actually went to pick him up and learnt so much from them. From what I've heard of local trainers that people pay for (not many good things basically) , I've come to conclude that trainers popular on KZread are just way better.

I think people need to realize that it’s not just about getting a dog they like, but getting a dog you can realistically take care of and control.

Unfortunately people have gotten it into their heads thanks to sites like The Dodo that "pibbles" are the sweetest and best dogs and they have the biggest smile and they're not like the stereotypes no no! And they're not. They are sweet pups when trained right, but that's just it. When they're trained right. Folks are out here buying and adopting these dogs not realizing what they're getting into because they want to deny that pits are strong dogs and they have a high preydrive and sometimes you have to be firm with them to ensure they don't become public hazards that go off over something moving too fast. They want to pretend that preydrive doesn't exist because they don't have to consider the breed's history and they can just love their precious little doggo who could do not harm like the one they saw on that #wholesome video 💗💗

So MANY (NOT on THIS channel...LOTS of educated realists in this group!) folks are in denial about the realities of breed characteristics/traits. This denial and lack of training/boundaries leads to much suffering.

@@homesteadgmad8223 Yeah my cousins used to have a pit named Beige. Gorgeous dog. Trained as an attack dog. An actual legit attack dog that had trigger words. But she was as sweet as a button and loved to sit on your feet to make you pet her. She loved to play tug of war, and by the end of her life, she loved going on walks because most of her life she'd just roamed the property line (because she knew where the family property ended). To me she was the image of a perfectly trained dog. But if you put another dog in front of her she'd try and kill it. She just would. That's not something you could train out of her. But that didn't make her a bad dog, and her family knew that. They never put her in a situation where she could get in trouble for her dog aggression, and that's how she got to live til she naturally died unlike so many other pits that just get fucked over because their owners act like they bought a Labrador and not a pit. It ain't right.

My extended family got a rottweiler after many years of having a basset hound. The rottweiler is just to much for them. But they don't put her into proper training. I don't know if they understand her needs as a much more powerful dog. But it's not the worst situation. So that's good. They just never exercise the poor thing :/

One thing Joel does that I admire: he doesn’t talk to clients like their dog is hopeless. He has a calm, respectful approach that always leaves you feeling empowered.

My rescue's name is Harley and I use the same words and tone as you did for recall. My poor Harley's ears were going back and forth. He was so confused!! lol

I appreciate that you can handle large, high energy dogs, Joel, but this video reminded me about having strong, clear and confident body language from the owner. With strong dogs like this fella, there can't be any faffing around!

I've got 2 rescued dogs myself! One I got at 4 months old had mainly environmental & separation anxiety and fear of men, most of it was 70% gone when hitting puberty thanks to a lot of desensitisation, a lot of walks and not giving into the irrational fear (I had to learn that, got advice from godfather). I got another rescued dog at already 1.5 years old (had been living on the street until 1 year old, ...) German Pinscher mix. Coming from the same region and organisation. Both males but instant friends. My first one then about 1 year old, unneutered, started to display some dominant behavior at the dog park. Is that so because he took on the dominant role inside the house among the dogs? I didn't do proper research on which type of dog would be a good combination with my first... So turns out the second one has a crazy terrier like barking, chasing prey drive. My first dog who had decent off-leash skills now also acts like a terrier or Pinscher too... The second one is anxious in bench, has separation anxiety worse than the first one and possibly small dog syndrome. Defensive / anxious / insecure with strange dogs, runs up to them or the fence, stomping feet, raised hackles, growling like: "Freeze! Until I identified (smelled) you". On walks he's very alert, always looking, perfect loose leash walking tho. I've tried the leash corrections for a long time but his emotional state is not improving at the sight of unknown dogs so I switched to redirection with kibble, spares him the added stress / anxiety on walks. My first one was more a "I pull to get to what I want", for him the leash corrections worked a miracle and has great loose leash walking now. The second one is not a fighter luckily and most dogs leave him alone altho he's supposed to be only 2 years old. It's not all going really smoothly. I've devoted my life to them for the last few years so we're okay but it's been quite a ride! I wouldn't recommend it to others to adopt based on a few photos. Do your research on breed, meet the dog, save yourself the trouble & make sure the medical background is spotless to save yourself future costs. I love working with them and recently added a Beauceron female pup to the household, what a difference! She's 3 months old, social, courageous, naughty ;) I've gotten quite good with dogs so my future plans might include owning a daycare or dog hotel, I thought about training but it seems like a skill I have to dedicate to for at least 10 years before I can profile myself as an expert.

I’m starting to notice that more owners are hyper focused on their dogs and what they are doing. It doesn’t need to be about the dog all the time, or even a lot of the time. The people factor and “energy” that Joel often talks about is so important, and it’s very evident here.

Hi! I have been seeing your videos since some weeks ago. I find it very interesting as I am currently working with marine mammals and birds (so reinforcement methods as you know!) I would love to see more of your videos talking about your stories at seaworld and the difference between the training you used there and the training you currently use on dogs more focus on eliminate unwanted behaviors :)

3 minutes in, I'm saying to myself, "this is the description of my dog" 😍 My black mouth cur pittie mix (Peter Parker) spent the 1st 6 months of his life in a shelter (went into the shelter at 3 weeks old), then 1 month in a foster home before I adopted him. The foster had 2 large adult dogs that he did fine with. Unfortunately, 2 weeks after bringing him home, the neighbors ' lab attacked Peter Parker in our driveway. He's never been able to be around other dogs ever since. A trainer was able to get him to walk around a dog while wearing a prong, but that was it. Where are the subsequent videos of Harley's training?

I have used your methods with an adopted Anatolian Shep/Great Pyrenease mix that I adopted from a shelter at a year and a half. She was wild and a stray...now she is my baby and very good with everyone. She jumps up sometimes...stands at my shoulders at 6'2...we are working on that. She is a big lover bear at this point. FYI dogs usually have accidents up to 10 months, so don’t be scared when he goes potty outside but then has an accident inside. Also there’s a phase where they destroy everything FOR MONTHS but then they stop (w training of course), look up gentle leaders, snappy trainers, and caned air dog training. These rlly RLLY helped me and my dog I swear

Harley is an absolutely beautiful dog!!❤. He’ll do great with consistent training! He’s super lovable! Sometimes, I feel owners need to provide more oral feedback to their dogs, especially those that are anxious or display incomplete dominance. 😊

This owner is feeding into his dog's anxiety and dependency on him, and I see no obedience or leash walking training... a lot of work to be done with this guy to make sure everyone is safe, but seems like a happy dog that will be good once he gets there! I always find it odd when people don't have collars on their dogs, like don't you want to make sure their tags are on in case they get away? Maybe that's just me, thanks as always for the video Joel

In the Uk its a legal requirement for tags to be on a dogs collar- even specifies what has to be on the tag!

Yeah you can’t heel train a dog on a harness . I personally only use a harness in the car on long trips as a tethering. Collar should be main training device used… harnesses make pulling worse unless they are specifically a front clip no pull harness . That owner feeds into the dogs anxiety … that dog is displaying alot of dominant /reactive tendencies that the owner thinks is only anxiety. Don’t feel sorry for the dog and stay firm but fair

@@lonewolf6287 My reactive staffy has never had anything but harness, and he learnt to walk on heel in 5mins! Leash pops and u-turns, 5mins was all it took with a HARNESS! I dont understand the use of prongcollars and even flat collars when you get same results with a harness!

I think collars are best for tags and training, harnesses put less pressure on the trachea. Though if your dog is trained not to pull, it doesn't matter much. In the video they used the piece over the mouth instead of a collar. To me that seems much safer for amateurs to train pullers rather than a collar.

@@Jyrgenstrator I’m glad you were able to successfully heel train your dog but the vast majority don’t and put them in harnesses and it can lead to extensive damage- first ever puppy school trainer I went to showed us the damage using harnesses only can do to a dog that hasn’t physically matured and isn’t heel trained - they had a American staffy client come to them that had damaged its growth plates under 9 months because of excessive pulling on a harness and took considerable time on a gentle leader to be heel trained, if you heel train a dog successfully there’s no problem what tool you use to walk them - if you don’t some tools cause more damage than others. There’s a lot of misinformation out there and many people walk their dogs using flat collars, gentle leaders , prong , choke, partial choke , harnesses top clip , harnesses front clip- the key is to go to a professional and discuss the best option and how to use them correctly in conjunction with heel training , everyone should at least go to one course of puppy or juvenile school run by a qualified trainer- my first one with my 45kg dog cost me $120 for 6 weeks not much to be honest for expert advice in a group environment with other owners who are learning about their dogs as well

Just wondering ( i havent watched the whole video yet) but my dog also a rescue was a light sleeper and very anxious and a trainer suggested a crate and my GSDXBully mix loves it he properly sleeps now (doors not locked on it so its a choice) and because hes sleeping his behaviour at home has really improved because hes not over tired and mouthy.

I know that controlling a strong female Pitt Bull that’s stubborn as an Ox can be a bit intimidating but I think that she is a fantastic dog! I am willing to learn more about tamping down a reactive behavior.

In ascertaining whether our APBT rescue was dog aggressive or not, we did much the same thing because if we felt ANY aggression from either side, we'd need to make some decisions on training. Luckily for us, we didn't have to. But I love how you treat this dog whom you know has psychological issues so he learns while still being safe and not freaking out. That's why you get the big bucks.

We have a young english staffy, and when he is really excited or aroused he will ignore treats - even the ones he normally likes most. This guy reminded me of our guy, when he dropped the chicken and hot dog his owner gave him. Sometimes when he was at obedience club he wouldn't even look at the treat - more or less didn't see or smell it. Just too into whatever else is going on.

My staffy is the same with treats, no interest when excited :D It would help if he was into treats

we rescued our Lab-pit mix and the day we got him the vet said he was too young for them to see him. He was great around friends, family and kids until he was neutered at a year old per the vet recommendation. After he was fixed he became aggressive towards people he doesn't know. He is well trained until he sees someone he doesn't know though. This video and pointers you give in it are amazing and have helped my wife and I with working with him. It's been difficult though without a fence and the fact that he weighs 105 lbs. We were wondering if maybe he woke up around strange people in pain and that has caused the behavior?

At what age should you start using a gentle leader? I know Joel says pups and dogs need different things at different ages. My husband rescued a 9 month old German Shepard and she’s at that age where I don’t know if she’s fully ready for the dog stuff vs. the puppy stuff, but she’s right on the cusp. Any suggestions?

Momma dogs are so important. I saw a momma put a rowdy puppy in its place. Mom's teach their kids how to act. Pups separated before 8 weeks is a hazard

I got my pit at 4 and a half weeks and she loved to pull, always nuts and in go mode, one time with the prong and she mellowed out with the leash, she never even pulled on the prong so it's weird. She got to run 3k every other day, I started out this dude's size and lost like 80lbs. We met a lot of not so happy dogs on walks out in the country and she always had a way of speaking their language, knew when to be serious and when to let them run up and say hi. She's old now but she'll still teach a young dog some manners. Except weiner dogs, they never learn.

I always told my customers who's dog pulled and wanted to get a harness, that harnesses are made to help an animal pull. They will just make their dog a more efficient puller.

Whoa. Just started watching and the history of the dog rings very familiar. My dog was also taken from his mom at 3 weeks, has dominance, an anxiety disorder and fear aggression. The only difference is that my dog was over socialized with a poor quality plan and ended up learning the advantage of his teeth before I took him in. I'm going to be so into this set of videos!

I have noticed that bully breed dogs that have stayed with mothers and siblings longer are more stable from watching breeders and their dog's. So sad that the puppy Boi lost his mama :( I think the little dude just wasn't able to learn the language of dogs early enough in life. I hope the owners are able to help their dog.

Since dogs uses pee to communicate, marking all over on an others dogs "property", and marking high up, means he is asserting himself as having rights to said area. This can be problematic and cause issues.. as if your neighbour walked in and claimed your livingroom.

my terrier mix dog is early taken away like this boy too, she quite doing well with socialize until she got her first heat. after that she have reactive to some strange dog (mostly) but she fine with some other ( I bring her new lil jrt sis and she gratefully ). now she 1.3yo and neutered for 3 month and still get angry when she saw new strange dog. I tried correcting her with slip collar but still go full leash pulling after calm for a second, I saw your session with Chow-Si mix that you say some dog just dont want to meet other dog so i thought that she just like that. any advice for this situation ?

My 1 year old pit is pretty much the same way. Dominant, high prey drive, strong, pulls a lot. I adopted him at 3 months & he’s not much different from Harely. I got him fixed, didn’t make a big difference

I have a 2 year old unitard Male. He is pit lab mix. His mom was dominant and other dog aggresive. He almost killed our neighbors dog so now we cant let him out without a leash. I've been watching your videos for 6 months and I'm trying but I'm have a lot of set backs. His dad lives in the house and is still uncut. They have fought 2 times and never have hurt each other. I can stop the fight in seconds. Outside is when he give me the most trouble. He is obedient inside but will not sit or come out side. What can I do that may give me an idea of how to get past it.

Halti are based on the principal that is used with horses. How do you control a 1000-2000lb animal? With a halter. They have to follow their head. Control the head and the rest of the body follows.

Is it me or did the owner not seem to listen to Joel at some points.

My neighbor's staffy does the same stare down. She is super dominant though. She has gotten into our yard and played pretty rough with our boxer mix before but she's very friendly with people. Small animals however, she gives them the same super intense stare down and has been known to kill cats. We have a 3 month old great Pyrenees/Border Collie mix that we very much worry about her getting to.

Got my puppy at 6 weeks and thought it didn't affect her much. Seeing him I see everything in my dog just lowered to a much lower level.

Bob in Michigan I don't have a dog -- but I just enjoy the heck out of your videos. Dogs (for the most part) have a LOT of wolf DNA (from what I've read) so they're basically "small wolves". And they're "pack animals" and have a "pack leader". So if the human is not the pack leader then the dog will take over the leadership of "the pack" even though it's just the 2 of you. Again -- enjoying the heck out of your videos.

I have a smaller dog that does not have any self control around dogs, even though he is super with the command leave it when it comes to food, cats etc. I will correct with the pop, sitting his butt down after clap+hey but he will still all of a sudden just fly away at the dog. It can be either a friend or unknown dog, but worst with dogs that he already likes. I have trained so much so much! He just doesn’t get it. I have switched up to a slip, switched to really stern voice, nothing works for more than a a minute or so. Then he’s back at it. It’s like he is so high energy, wants stuff so much, that he completely forgets everything around him. 😩 Normal walks and normal passing other dogs is going so well. But the problem is most when we are walking on leash with others. He just can’t and it feels like his personality is getting in the way, no amount of correction helps. 😨

Damn! That need for eye contact is INTENSE, just trying to get right in the other dog's face nonstop, no interest in smelling him or anything. I have never seen that, definitely a great example of why letting dogs spend time with their mom and siblings. Has almost zero social ability, he's not scared or aggressive, just INTENSE

I know Joel has been very direct with similar clients in the past and I wish more of those conversations were captured on video. Just from my observation some of these dog owners are upset to discover only hard work and persistence will help their dog and no magical woosah feel good technique will fix the dog. As for the breed you're opening up yourself to enormous liability if your heart isn't fully invested in training. Also not ideal on your home insurance premiums when they find out you didn't disclose the blue nose on the property.

I was always intimidated by pitbulls - so few people can get a proper behaviour from them! Thank you for the video

I have two pitty's (that are the same blue color this guy is) and actually conditioned loose leash walking with the back clip of their harness, and I had to really use some weird techniques to give the same corrections you do. Recently switched to the front clip since I realized it was a lot easier to give more harsh corrections when needed (like when chasing dogs or small animals)

Yes with a harness it is possible to train dog walk on heel, mine did in 5mins.. Before that I used front clip also without corrections and he didnt pull that much. Topclip however was the place for heel training.

i use to have a dog de-bordauxe (if thats how you spell it) the type from turner and hooch and she was always a great dog super friendly but if she wanted to go do something there was nothing you could do she would turn her head back to get slack and whip her head forward and snap the leash she snapped chains and fabric leashed finally we had a custom collar and leash built extra thick chains like thicker then my fingers and the collar was a super thick leather she also had a custom gentle leader that attached to both chain and collar she only ever growled at 2 people one guy who tried to force his way into the house when i answered the door and once at a guy who was sketchy lookin was walking towards us she didnt pull me but stepped infront of me and just went ballistic saliva flyin out of her mouth hair up and this deep growl and barks that were just scary for lack of a better word these are the only 2 times ever ever did this towards people 1 time my chinese crested got her head stuck under the fence and my neighbors at the time had 3 rotties that didnt like dog and they were going nuts and my bordauxe jumped through the glass window of the door and let out this terrifying bark and growl again slammed into the fence and broke 3 board and tried pulling the other apart the rotties back up i got the little dogs head out of the fence (she was fine) and my bordauxe just glared through the hole in the fence my neighbor got his dogs inside and my bordauxe didnt leave my little dogs side for like 2 weeks and with my little brothers when they were babies the bordauxe would lay infront of the stairs and nudge my brothers away if they got too close then shed go and laydown by the stairs again we never needed those baby gates
