It's about surviving domestic abuse. Pretty hard to be subtle about this sort topic. Two of the otehr songs from the album are also pretty hard and edgy. Only I-DLE.

In every recent interview (G)I-DLE has been saying they want to connect more to their American fans and it seems like their version of that is by going as dark as possible, having songwriters come in with “I’m a psycho for your love, I want you to fall apart” and it all seems a bit much. I greatly prefer the sarcasm and humor of Soyeon’s writing. When it’s the group writing their own material I am on board 100,000%. This collab with 88Rising is trying to tap into the dark toxic relationship songs that are ingrained in American popular culture at the moment and have this big massive, movie like video with it and it’s just exhausting to me.

"Used to ring the doorbell in my heart" is such a pretty phrase, I'm absolutely stealing that! You're not alone in your thoughts about the music video; I've seen quite a few people say that they wished it was better. I think, especially if they're going to do a concept that you see a lot these days, you have to make a very good version of it for it to stand out to the watcher. This music video just felt... fine. Not poorly made but not really doing anything other than the basics, so the message falls a bit flat.

I don't know if anyone else has pointed this out. A theory going around is that only Minnie is alive; the others are ghosts who each were killed by the abusive lover. Minnie saves herself and helps them satisfy their grudges by killing him before he can kill her too. That is why the other four look peaceful at the end and then disappear. It actually strikes me as a somewhat surprisingly kdrama kind of theme, but I find it helps me in appreciating the video (such as each of the 'ghosts' being pictured where they were killed and then shown with flowers.) That said, I do worry that Soyeon seems to have stepped back a bit creatively in the all-english writing and production. I hope she gains confidence in that arena going forward.

(G)I-DLE has done great things, particularly this year, and it's good to do a song in English rather than an English version of a song. But, yeah, "I do" was a hard act to follow, and I am equally ambivalent on this particular MV and song.

Paradise and Could It Be, the unreleased Yuqi solo song in particular, are literal masterpieces. In Yuqi’s case, the video that was released instead as a solo venture was a real head scratcher, this song with this godawful baby-chimpunk sample that went on forever instead. That’s how it goes with record labels. They have no clue, nor do they care, what connects with people. They go on to promote what they think is going to go viral on TikTok instead of what comes from the heart.

What's wrong with the music video, in particular? It always helps if you explain what went wrong as clearly as possible; of course, it's your opinion, but that's why we're here. For me, the way people talk about this team and their work makes me feel dizzy. I've never felt their MVs were particularly thoughtful in the topics they cover; 'Nxde' as an example is very blunt, in the same way that Banksy as an artist is blunt and nearly devoid of substance. The way that MV adores that artist tells me a lot about how this team approaches topics superficially, which is also a problem with the industry as a whole; it's difficult to do research when you're up against such constant, relentless time pressure. I appreciate wanting to make a statement, but there is such a clear lack of research about any topic, and the resulting "empowerment" feels empty because it doesn't address any specific issues at all. That's a genuine problem, because the liberation of women is a much more diverse, complicated problem that isn't solved by "self-care" or consumption; it's not reconcilable with capitalism or empire, both of which the Republic of Korea certainly embraces, particularly currently with the presidency of yet another conservative hardliner. That said, I thought the MV for 'I want that' is pretty clearly about how to address domestic violence and misogyny more generally: all the girls fantasize about killing the man who abuses them, but only one of them ends up killing him and the ending reveals that she is the only one who survived. I think that's also a very blunt and simple message, but that doesn't have to be a bad thing, when the messaging actually attempts to say something that goes against the status quo, which tells girls they can't defend themselves; that teaches girls it's wrong to fight back, or it puts them in the same category as perpetrators when they do. Self defense is not the same as aggression. But I'd still say they could've done more to really talk about that, and bring out that message. Also '88 rising' is a VERY suspect name for a western company. I do not trust them.

That's the difference between having a title track written by Soyeon or not. She already has in mind a clear concept for the clip and it's more coherent. Here the album being in partnership with 88 rising I don't know how much implications the girls had compared in the process compared to their korean releases. The songs are still good so but it lacks a bit of (g)I-dle true flavor.

Having seen various interviews with them, they were very involved in the process and didn't just accept random songs. It's good to see them stepping out of their comfort zone and trying new things, then again they always like to do that. I think maybe because we're not use to hearing all English songs from them they don't sound like the (G) Idle we're all used to. I would think they'll probably do more English songs in the future and will only get better. Personally I love this mini album.

  • @MThrow

Agreed, they don't feel like G-Idle songs because when Soyeon writes the songs she knows exactly who will be singing what lines, and HOW they will sing those lines. These songs are good, but you can tell they aren't G-Idle songs.

Regarding the song, it turned out to really grow on me after a few listens after initially being kind of so-so with it. Maybe I'm alone here, but it somehow became one of the most addictive songs of the year for me after that. Regarding the MV, I feel that the stylistic portrayal of the theme hearkened back to one of my other favorite MVs by them and I thereafter felt a really huge missed opportunity. While I wouldn't expect a completely different studio to reference an older MV by them, I felt that making just a few minor changes could turn it into a prequel to the Oh My God MV, which IMO even fits the theme. We have Minnie being the protagonist in each one, which could altogether follow the timeless tale of the human condition ("I Want That" - Desire; "Oh My God" - Suffering). The way I've personally interpreted Oh My God was how it was a journey into her psyche upon being placed in a mental institution after some catastrophic event where she gave into some horrible sin. With a few little tweaks, I Want That could easily be such a story behind that (heck, the song keeps repeating the line "I want that oh my oh my OMG" where we can recontextualize it into some monkey's paw wish).

Idle also didn't write this song and it had outside producers. For whatever reason Cube or whoever made the decision to use exclusively outside song writers for this all English project. This despite the fact that both Yuqi and Minnie have shown they can write and produce songs in English. While it's kind of nice to see them stretch out in genres and style, it doesn't strike me to be as good as their self-written/produced stuff.

Although i love both the songs and MVs, especially because they really show the group's vocals and acting abilities, I think it is really obvious that they did not write or produce the album. The lyrics aren't as good as they usually are, and the MVs don't really connect with the songs. I really hope that if they do another English album that they take full control of the process, even if they get help with making sure the English is right.

It's not really their album, it's just a cover of 88rising songs, and like wikipedia says : 88rising is a US mass media company, so they write simple mass media songs with mass media MV (with of course the US morbid fascination for guns). Hope they'll rest a little with this era, so they'll be fine and charged for a new real come back 😍 The book title at the begin is "C'est la vie", meaning "That's life" in french, but thankfully, that's not life to gun kill people we break with. This MV is really disturbing, so far from their kindness.
