    The current best driver is number 69 Kalle Rovanperä, a young Finn. He was the youngest ever world champion winning the title at 22 years old in 2022. He won again last year. There are some KZread clips of him as a 9 year old driving like crazy. 😄

    The co-driver has the notes of every special stage (every turn, how sharp the turn is, every jump, every bump and hole, possible big rocks or tree stumps near the road, etc.) and he is constantly telling the driver what comes next so that the driver can drive at maximum speed the whole stage. Before every race, the drivers and co-drivers drive through the stages and make notes of everything that is noteworthy. Of course if the driver has competed in the same rally several times he might remember the roads, but still something may always change.

  • @IlkkaPrusi

    @IlkkaPrusi

    Yes. They can only drive the stages a couple of times at road speeds before the event and each event has 20ish stages so around 300km of competitive stages to drive. And many of the stages change every year or there's new things to worry about like changes in the road. Nothing like circuit racing..

  • @akyhne

    @akyhne

    4 ай бұрын

    @@IlkkaPrusiEach rally event is around 300-350 km in length. Mostly a bit over 300 km. So it's really "only" 140-170 km, they have to map and race.

  • @IlkkaPrusi

    @IlkkaPrusi

    4 ай бұрын

    @@akyhne If they drive all stages twice, it is 140-170km of notes, but they need to anticipate how the stages will change during competition with many cars driving them. Then there's front crews like gravel crews on asphalt rallies with notes on where mud has been introduced to the stage by cutting corners. So they have to add those notes to the stage notes, which makes it nearly a new stage from the previous run. And sometimes organizers throw in changes like shortening a stage due to problems and so on. A pacenote isn't a "static" thing, it is alive during the competition.

  • @vampire4312

    Yes, the co-pilot is basically telling the driver what to expect next. Kinda like: "slight left, hard right, hairpin left, watch out jump into slight right, narrow bridge..." and so on. He's basically a passenger reading out notes, onboard a cruise-missile flying thru the woods...

    Finnish driver Kalle Rovanperä and his co-driver Jonne Halttunen are without a doubt the best in the world at the moment. They won 2022 and 2023 world rally championships.

    Well, there is so much to tell you about the WRC, that it would be a series of books. At the moment the best Team is Toyota Gazoo Racing and their driver, Kalle Rovanperä. Worlds youngest double World Champion (2022 and 2023). Watch his videos, when he is 8 years old and driving rally. He was also the World Champion in WRC Rally 2 category with Skoda.

    the guy in the passenger seat is the co-driver, who reads out notes that were made just for that stage. they drive the stages earlier in road cars and make the notes for the rally. that also explains how the drivers are so fast at reacting to corners, as they roughly know beforehand how severe the corner is, how long of a straight is there before it, if there are bumps, jumps or dips.

    For a long time already, it has been clear that if the top speed if the car is less than 200 km/h, you won't fight for the podium in rally Finland. Fastest average speed for several years in Finland, and fastest jumps.

    The "dolphin" noise you're talking about is the rev limiter being hit repeatedly. You can hear it most obviously when a car goes over a decent sized jump.

    This would not be possible without a co-driver reading phase notes. Finland is without a doubt the fastest rally in the WRC calender. Around 120+ km/h average speed on the stages. It is time for the first event now in Monte Carlo rally so keep your eyes open and follow it here on youtube as the WRC channel shows highligts that starts the 25th of january. After that it is rally Sweden on snow and ice in february. Have fun 😊

    People who haven't seen wrc live doesn't realize how insanely fast they are going. When you are at a rally and watching the big dogs with 4wd turbo cars like Mitsubishi evo you'r thinking "wow! How tha hell can they go so fast on gravel!?" Then WRC enter.... It's a totally other level.. Btw rally Finland are known for HIGH speed and long jumps. The co driver read the map and tell the driver how the road is 3-4 corners ahead, "in 150meters the road turn hard left" (but in a more effective rally language)

    This Rally Finland 2022 was won by Ott Tänak, at the wheel of Hyundai. It was regarded as one of the best driving in recent decades. Because he won it with what was estimated as not the best car at the time. The car was lacking. So he was on the edge, constantly.

    Fastest rally ever, was rally Finland 2016, with an average speed of 78,68 mph, or 126,62 km/h. In many events, there are stages, where the average speed is no more that 85 km/h or 53 mph. In that particular 2016 rally, the slowest stage had an average speed of 78.53 km/h, and the fastest 134.63 km/h (48,8 & 83,66 mph respectively). So you are a bit off.

    I guess I am in a minority as a Finn but I have no interest whatsoever in motor-sports. A couple of days ago Markkanen who plays basketball in the NBA was elected the sportsman of the year and some people were complaining why the ball-bouncer was elected instead of Rovanperä. A bit more competition to say for a start. A global sport versus a sport where ones who could win could all fit in one car.
