One of the really cool things about Voiceplay is that they do so much of the non-singing work themselves. Including arranging all of their own music (they do hire occasional assistance for some guest artists, especially when the feature female vocalists). Most of the arrangements are done by Geoff (the bass) or Layne (the beatboxer), though Eli (the Tenor 2) has started flexing in that arena lately as well. This particular tune was arranged by Layne and Eli, and yeah, they nailed it. Since you enjoyed Omar Cardona, Voiceplay did do one other song with him as a guest - Superstition (originally by Stevie Wonder). You may want to check that out.

You named off the Trifecta of Acapella groups -- Home Free (fans are called Home Fries), Voice Play (Voice Players) and Pentatonix (Pentaholics). The Trifecta of Basses are Tim Foust (Home Free), Geoff Castellucci (Voice Play) and Avi Kaplan (formerly of PTX). All 3 have 5 Octave ranges, although Tim's is almost 6 at this point. Are there other Acapella groups and Basses out there? Of course. But, these are the best of the best. Enjoy :)

Geoff does make it seem effortless. He doesn't strain to hit the lows. When he does hit them, he can go right back to any of his range in a completely smooth and clean fashion. That's taken a great deal of practice. Heck, if you listen to some of their early songs and then now he's gotten noticeably better. The same goes for the rest of the group. Eli didn't seem to get as much chance to shine until Earl left and now.....

the fun thing about the Voiceplay guys, is that all of them have a much bigger range than their "label" in the group. Geoff is actually a baritone, but mainly sings bass and also has no problem going all the way up to tenor with his 5 octave range. Eli is the tenor, but also has a beautiful baritone range and can even sing some bass. Layne is the beatboxer, but also is a great baritenor and also plays violin, and he can also do some bass notes. J. None is the baritone but can also do tenor and bass, and plays the violin. Oh, and ALL the guys can actually do a fair bit of beatboxing :D

Geoff has claimed he is a baritone with a bass range, but I disagree, wholeheartedly. I have ran his normal speaking voice through a spectrum analyzer and it averages around 77Hz, or about Eb2; the average bass singer only reaches E2 (Geoff's normal speaking voice is lower than what the average bass singer can even reach singing), and their normal voice frequency is up around 90Hz.

@@laundrygoddess4, my main instrument is guitar, but I also play piano, cello, violin, viola, double bass, mandolin, banjo, ukulele, glockenspiel, and pretty much anything else that isn't driven by wind-power or reed. Once you play one stringed instrument, keyed, tuned instrument with notes in a row, they can all be learned; they are only different disciplines and tunings... with modern stringed instruments being tuned in 4ths and bowed instruments in 5ths.

I love this cover, and it's really cool that you recognized Eli already, he is so talented and has such a wide range. He also does voices so well too. Geoff is such an easy "gateway" into Voiceplay, he's so talented and they really work his entire range, so he typically impresses first, but then you dig in and really learn just how good every single one of these guys is. So much talent, so much work, and knowing that the vast majority of the work (arranging, editing, etc) of all their videos is all them as well just makes it that much cooler in my opinion. I think because they do most of the arrangements, they know just how to arrange for their set of voices, and even when to push each other which just makes them better and better. Glad you enjoyed this one, looking forward to what you dig into next.

So, from left to right Geoff Castellucci (Bass Beast), Eli (pronounced Eh Lee) Jacobson (Tenor, Arrangement), Omar Cardona (Guest Tenor), J. None (Baritone/Tenor, we miss him), Layne Stein (Vocal Percussion, Arrangement, Producer)

He was bullied growing up and this is a truly touching rendition. His vocal abilities and breath control are amazing. There isn't a weak link in the group, and that is a huge part of what I love about them. Even when they team up with people, they just completely blow the whole thing out of the water. I'm in the group of people who are going to be shattered when JNone leaves the group... I'm still recovering from Earl's departure. I do think that Deejay Young is shaping up to be a good new standing member of the group, I just need to see him in something more theatrical to put the full seal of approval, but I'm willing to give him the chance for that.
