I'm glad someone's reacting to Split Enz. Such an awesome and inventive group. Their their 70s costumes and makeup were off the chain kooky. Totally love it!

Split Enz sadly never got the world recognition they deserved because they were so ahead of their time. It's great to see people enjoy them now still ahead of their time.

Neil had already joined the band at this point. That’s him in glasses playing lead guitar

1979 New Zealand. No MTV, populated by Saturday Night Fever and Grease soundtracks. Two little girls, 12 and 10, dancing their asses off in front of the TV playing I See Red, while their Dad (who grew up with Elvis and Buddy Holly) was saying a polite version of WTF?! This was so out there, and the start of our musical educations. I love seeing this so much - thank you!

These are the brothers Tim Finn (Split Enz) and Neil Finn (Split Enz and Crowded House). Saw Crowded House last month with The Teskey Brothers. Great mates of Jimmy Barnes (Cold Chisel), he calls them his Finn-laws.

They weren't obscure in Australia and NZ. They have been popular since the seventies

Fantastic song, Split Enz were the first band I fell in love with. Tim is a fantastic singer and songwriter, especially zanny stuff. His brother Neil joined later with a more pop vibe.

Correct, although Neil was there to co-write many of the hits from this album. He's singing back-up and playing guitar in this clip. Two of the best writer/performers of all time and a great band live.

Tim and Neil Finn were known for their brilliant lyrically. The album ‘I see red’ was mainly about Tim separating and divorce. Neil, of course, when on too form his own group ‘Crowded House’. Neil, recently toured with Fleetwood Mac. What a journey.

Love split enz ..use to do speed skate at the rink on a Saturday arvo in Brissie to this song..they are amazingly talented and orginal artists x

Tim in a less crazy mode was also the lead singer for Split Enz in the song "I Hope I Never" and love him as a solo artist for the song "Persuasion".

Yeah, "I Hope I Never" is a haunting, beautiful song - one of my favourites from Tim.

The guy far right - Neil Finn. Went on to write and release "Don't Dream it's Over" many years later.

Paul McCartney was once asked "how does it feel too be the greatest songwriter of all time..." he said "I dunno - ask Tim Finn..!".

Bought this as a single 45 rpm record in my last year of high school. I would have played it 150 times in a row, it was just fantastic for 1979. Great band, great time

This takes me back to the roller skating days, it was the fav speed skate song in the 80s.

Tim Finn was the lead singer. His brother Neil joined the band for a while. Neil eventually left to form Crowded House. Splitz Enz was an Auckland NZ band.

Yes, Neil joined in 1977 until the band ended in 1984 and the Finn brothers were a formidable one-two songwriting punch

I had the privilege of seeing Tim and Neil 10 feet away sing this!

There only ever punk tune, but a masterpiece. That's how good they were and still are in all their permutations throughout.

Six Months in a Leaky Boat is another great Split Enz number, has a really haunting outro

Such a theatrical based band but still with dynamite musicianship . They had a number of hit songs, including Six Months In A Leaky Boat which was banned in the UK as it was released just when the Falklands War started for more reasons. Crazy!

Funny you mention Michael J. Fox while listening to an NZ band, as MJ starred in a great NZ movie from Peter Jackson called The Frighteners.

Tim and Neil Finn went on to found Crowded House, who you've reacted to before - Neil also joined Fleetwood Mac in 2018.

There’s a great clip of Eddie Vedder doing this live when on tour in NZ - and Tim Finn joined him on stage …. Really worth checking out 👍🏻

I Got You-Split Enz

This was used as the theme for the Coca Cola ads in Australia in the 90's.

Guys you did Split ENZ!!!! They were more great live from what I've seen. Great musicians!!!! Years later Neil and Tim did 7 worlds collide concert inviting guests from around the world and of course, Neil asked his sons band betchadupa who they would like to invite and they asked for Eddie Vedder, it's def worth watching the live version of this, seeing Tim Finn still Rock it out in his dad shirt and even show Eddie how it's done was awesome !!!!!!

The guitar solo is played by Neil Finn, singer Tim's younger brother and later the founder, singer and songwriter for Crowded House.

Great fun, cross between pantomime and clever music. Tim Finn was the main singer in this one, Neil became more prominent and of cause when the Enz split, Neil founded Crowded House. I highly recommend My Mistake.

"My Mistake" is one of their best. "Poor Boy" is a favourite as well as "Message To My Girl".

I saw them at Bombay Rock in Melbourne when this song had just been released. On the same night Paul Kelly and the Dots also performed it in their set (on different floors of the venue).

This was our Roller skating song, when speed skating came on. I grew up in Sydney, they were very popular.

Listen to their first album, Mental notes from 1975! Its sort of crazy prog/art rock, totally original, they got a bit more commercial , slowly, lol, True colours from 1980 had four hit singles, and was huge inOZ andNZ

The song is from circa 1978, which was the height of the punk era. The band started out as Split Ends and then changed to Split Enz after a couple of years. Saw them several times on the university and general music venue tours. Am enjoying watching your happy reactions to them.

Neil and Tim Finn, (or Neul and Tum Funn from Splut Unz if we are taking the mickey out of the NZers) are the McCartney/Lennon of Aus/NZ.. They lyrical and musical content is amazing.. Tim is the older one, Neil went on to form Crowded House.. This is kinda punk really!

I think you've done reactions to Crowded House. The lead singer, Neil Finn, joined his brother, Tim, in Split Enz as a teenager and wrote some of their biggest hits. Split Enz were known for their incredibly creative costumes and their frenetic musical style. The young man in the glasses playing the red guitar in this clip is Neil. Tim was in Crowded House for a short time as well.

Saw them at Cloudland put on by 4ZZZ in Brisbane on the True Colours tour. Brilliant ! As good or better than the album sound. It was crazy !

And of course those keys were in the days before samplers, just hard out playing

An epic tune and if you start to break it down it’s even more impressive

So many things a nasty type could pick at..... but also a piece of artistic brilliance. This is not rock but it is fuelled by that intangible in your face rock attitude laced with a touch of jazz party time. A good performance of a great arrangement.....but not one of their better songs. I still recommend the official video of My Mistake ...... in the same suits , I think.

Gotta check out Sweet Dreams and Stranger Than Fiction. saw them in San Diego on the Waiata tour. add Bold as Brass and Shark Attack to your list .

You should watch this song I See Red performed by Betchadupa and Eddie Vedder. Betchadupa's lead singer is the son of Neil Finn, and his uncle Tim Finn makes an appearance in this performance.

Tom Finn was related to Huckleberry Finn ....and Fatty Finn ..my sister said "but not fin in glee " (apparently, he passed away - still not being related ) Also .....nothing to do with shark fins ....but may have invented shark fin soup- THUS the name ......but i dont really know .

they're not obscure, this song didn't dominate the aus/nz charts...

If you are after the exact opposite from the same band watch "I hope I never".
