100% fair assessment of Winter's stage presence. I do agree that she has gotten better this past year. I think she will grow into becoming an iconic idol, she definitely has the talent for it, just a matter of putting in the extra work and coming into herself as a performer.

Neither Red Velvet nor SNSD had any issues with their stage presence when they debuted. It seems to be a common refrain with AESPA in general. It's already been over a year for them.

Worth pointing out that Aespa have talked about their cold stage presence and how that’s how they are directed to perform for their concept. When they performed at their showcase in LA there were times when they broke character during a song and were laughing and smiling then regained composure and went back to cold. That said, Winter has had my throat since their debut with her powerful dancing and gaze. Love her!

Idk if that helpful to them because their expression isn't cold it's more bored to many people which is why people don't like it. Like I'm not being mean but if that's "cold" I really think they need to change it to something more obvious because they are more just keeping a straight face. I don't see the "cold" part of their facials 😭😭😭 (Edit: Btw I think Winter is the best because she definitely is more consistent but the rest just look bored sometimes and it isn't as consistent as Winter Edit 2: I forgot to mention Karina but I think she is right behind Winter in consistency)

I feel like a lot of people form the opinion that aespa's stage presence is bad based on malicious clips people post on tiktok where they cuts of parts of the choreography that would look awkward no matter who does it - if you actually watch aespa's fancams, especially individually, they all have good stage presence. the problem is with their choreography, which can be proven in how much 'better' their stage presence was in black mamba and next level, when their choreographies were much better

Regarding the aespa stage presence thing. I personally haven't had as much issue connecting with their performances, but I do get the criticism. One thing I always remember is that the girls debuted during the pandemic, and they didn't get many opportunities to perform in front of live audiences. I know plenty of other groups that debuted during this time might have been fine, but knowing aespa's personalities, I think they really needed time and experience being in front of crowd's, being comfortable on stage, feeding off that energy and also just building their confidence. Even though they started from a big company and therefore debuted with a lot of hype, they were still rookies at the end of the day. They are definitely gaining more confidence now and I imagine that will continue with time.

yeah aespa really got screwed with debuting in the middle of the pandemic. you really need an audience to connect with in order to start building that stage presence. hopefully with the lockdowns around the world going away, hopefully it won't be too late for them to start building that up. it'll be quite a tough road for them though, since they have to unlearn getting used to unknowingly relying on cameras as a crutch to give their performance an extra oomph of charisma.

i relly agree with winter one, her stage presence over the past few month is growing greatly like there's already a noticeable difference between her presence in girls era first stage comeback and her performance in MBC gayo few days ago..i was so shock by how good winter presence in that performance

Yes, Taeyeon didn't have a lot of voices through her career, her music usually uses the same Taeyeon, that's the reason i love her being in GoT. If you look at Wendy for example, another great vocalist, she had a TON of different voices through her career, because of Red Velvet flexibility in genres.

Giselle is absolutely killing it, like fr, she had lost her confidence after some criticism, but she is FIRE right now, her latest Zoo stage was phenomenal too. I think Ningning never had a problem performing, she practices poses and everything.

Stamp On It is such a classic Dem Jointz track and I really looking forward to seeing what they do in this album. SuperM coming back next year has been suspected but an official trailer just makes my heart sing. I miss them so!! Winter is improving and people just need to put some Patience Pants on. (She did a collab stage with Chanyeol, Raiden and Mark (on Chanyeol and Raiden's song Yours, soooo pretty) and you could visibly see her relax. It was lovely. And Mark's rap... so lovely) The Cure is just really a smile... just enjoying them sing together and the choir feeling invites you in

This exceeded my expectations and they were already pretty high,cant wait to hear the album/ see the music video! 2023 starting off 🔥 Btw:SM girls are on another level. I don't care who is most popular or w/e, when it comes to talent, SM girls have great talent.

I thought last years SM winter project was mostly pretty naff, so I only even checked this years out on a random impulse. And holy shit, Priority absolutely blew me away too. What an incredible song.

i understand what you said about stage presence like its probably the most important thing an idol should has (at least for me). aespa is one of my fav ggs and my bias is karina, and i was never disappointed by her stage presence. maybe i didn't put so much attention on the other members but while they had some amazing stages, some other perfs also felt dull to me. as someone who's really interested in performances i appreciate groups that could give a great perf more and i hope aespa could improve that bcs i rly like their music.

I think the thing with Winter is that her performances aren’t the most consistent in terms of energy levels. I actually became a fan of her after watching one of her fancams for savage. The fierceness and the sharpness of her moves really shocked me. It’d be interesting if you could do a deep dive into Winter and see if your opinions change 😆

I never had a problem with Winter for this reason, she moves SHARP, i felt her in the scene since the first look, she just doesn't have a great time focusing her gaze if there isn't a camera to look at, she gets shy easily surrounded by people. She had been trying to fix this issue and its clear that she is doing it, she is slowly starting to caught the attention even when she doesn't have a camera to look at.

aespa is currently my 2nd favorite K-pop group of all time [with f(x) being my #1 favorite], but I absolutely agree with your take on their stage presence. Imo, aespa's greatest weakness is their performances and stage presence. But what's different for me is that those factors do not affect my interest in a group very much. So basically all I wanted to say is while I am obsessed with aespa, I think it's totally valid for others not to feel the same.

There is, IMO, WAY too much emphasis in Kpop placed on things other than the actual song, and I find that incredibly sad. I stan Kpop groups for their songs, period. No amount of "flair" is going to make me like a group if I don't like the music. aespa (and this does not apply to them exclusively) could stand completely still behind 4 mics and sing any of their songs, and I would still stan them, because the songs are fantastic and their vocals are immaculate. Sadly, a lot of Kpop fans don't find that good enough.

I think it's cuz k-pop idols also dance and some go over their limit to dance which gives stans higher expectations of their dance performances in general but don't worry I'm also not someone who's much of an analyzer and likes music and vocals when I stan idols

@@lilyrose0116 but during smrookies, irene was already around the same age as winter now. if you actually follow aespa and the content they post on bbl, etc, you'll find that winter is actually an incredible dancer + if you watch any of her fancams you'll see that she has stage presence without needing to do anything dramatic - i-fans have a skewed image of her because of people setting her up on social media with awkward/malicious cuts, however in korea she is one of the top female idols + she literally goes viral every week for her stage presence/talent

I would say it's vice versa like step back is more vocally focused and stamp on it goes hard with percussions and synths... Either way both are good in different ways

This is just my opinion, but I partially blame “stage presence” issues on the choreographer (keyword: partially). Take this song for example… that dance break, let’s be real, was VERY low intensity/energy for the backing track. I felt the same with the dance break in aespa’s Girls. Compare it to the dance break in NMIXX’s Dice or ITZY’s Loco as examples. I’m sorry, but when I think of “best girl group choreographies,” SM is not the company that comes to mind. No, not all choreo has to be high energy or intensity to be good. But with the pace of this song, I personally just feel like the choreo fell flat. That being said, this is a form of art, and everyone will see it differently. And that isn’t a bad thing.

i have to agree...most of SM gg choreos are "soft" with few exceptions (very few)..Black Mamba is the only choreo that i like from aespa so far (and a bit of illusion) and they really impressed me with BM performances..but when NL was released, the choreo just plain boring (yes, it's iconic but i started to find their perfs not as interesting, Savage and Girls are better than NL but definitely far from BM) whereas the bgs have really interesting choreos..maybe they can have whoever choreograph the bgs to work with the girls someday..anyway i'm very proud of the girls for improving day by day with their perfs (seems to notice live audiences and live singing helped them to improve a lot)..excited for got the beat comeback and aespa future comebacks!

"Stage presence refers to the certain charisma and charm that a theater actor or performer possesses that draws in an audience and commands their full attention." While it's no math formula and what exactly constitutes strong stage presence varies from person to person, it's a real factor and not inherently a euphemism for "I don't like the way someone looks." It's just not just an idol thing - it's a performer thing. It matters in theater, public speaking, even teaching. Even if it can't be quantified, it's a real force and can be talked about. If you don't enjoy talking about things that can't be formally measured, that's fine, but it doesn't always mean the topic or criticism is complete bogus.

Stage presence is a person's charisma and ability to hold your attention when performing. There are different kinds and different ways of expressing said stage presence and also different people will prefer different types of presence. I do not think - nor have I ever thought - that Winter has no stage presence. She has a certain kind of allure and charm that just so happens to be more subtle than most kpop fans are used to. Her style of presence is something I personally have trouble connecting to for the most part as I'm someone that prefers to see a bit more fire in the eyes and outward expression of natural charisma. If you love aespa and their kind of presence connects to you then that's great, I'm glad. They deserve all the fans they have and I will never sit here and say they aren't super talented. They simply aren't my favorite group when it comes to performing and there's nothing wrong with that. Also, just a little note, views aren't always the best judge when it comes to things like this. There are hundreds of fancams from great performers that have basically no views. Aespa are a popular group, winter is a popular member = more views. Granted there are probably plenty of people that watch it because they like the way she performs but like.. popularity plays into it lmao

I will talk as a former singer and performer and as someone who took stage and singing lessons for a few years. You can have the most beautiful and best voice in the world or be the best dancer or rapper in the world, but what make a singer or a dancer be popular and successful is charisma on stage and i'm not talking about visual or beauty here. To explain what charisma is little complex because what make charisma is, is a lot of little things put together. You must remember one important thing about all arts, is that it is connected directly with emotions and how you use and channel them to make the audience feel the same. I will try to give you a basic example of what i means. Let's say a singer have to sing a very sad song about that her dog are dead and that she is very sad about it. Do you will connect with the sad song if the singer sing it with a smile on her face and look happy, of course not, it's also not the voice it-self who will channel the sadness of the sadness but how the singer put and channel the sadness in her voice, in her face expression, in her whole body that make you feel the sadness of her song and connect with with your own emotions that is what charisma and stage presence are. it's like that for every arts and stage arts, even movies and series. Making you feel the right emotion at the right moment through their arts is what good artist do best and the result of that the audience attention and focus is on that artist only. So people don't say that Winter don't have talents or that she cannot sing, i'm not a Easpa fan yet and even me admit that the young lady have plenty or talents, BUT she do seem to struggle to use and channel her own emotions into her voice and whole body to perform the emotions of the song. I can even say, just by watching her perform that she look very nervous, stressed and tenses and that do not help her channel her own emotions. So that is why people say that she lack charisma and stage presence a little, she do have some but it is still lacking a little and it's noticeable to others. The only solution for that is, well experiences and lot of practices. Hoping that i did explain well enough and in a simple enough way.

Unfortunately Aespa is the first SM group I have no connection to. I like the girls off stage personalities, but I am not even invested enough to watch most of their content. One point might be I am not into their main songs, I absolutely dig into their albums their b-sides really are my thing but that seems not enough to make me become a fan

I don't think Winter or aespa was "allowed" to have a great stage presence or even allowed to sing many great parts of the song. If you notice, the older kpop stars are given better high notes and the line distribution is biased. That being said, I guess this is one way SM honours older artists more than newer ones. Eventually Aespa members will be allowed to have more lines in songs as they gain experience and seniority.
